Deb's Lies and Videotape

Take Sean Hannity, add Oliver North, and you have a recipe that sends the gals from Outfoxed into paroxysms of fabrication.

If it’s Hannity and Colmes, it must be deborah of the newshounds (another fine product from the Outfoxed cabal). Just hours after tonight’s episode aired, she was up with a “report” on a segment with Col Oliver North that managed to completely misrepresent what the man had to say:
Hannity and Oliver North teamed up tonight, on Hannity&Colmes, to defend the soldier in the controversial video from Iraq which shows a U.S. Marine, possibly, shooting a wounded Iraqi....Hannity and Ollie both agreed that if in fact something really did happen, the soldiers of course must be prosecuted. Then North, starting his defense, said that the Iraqi's [sic] who beheaded the hostages, will never be prosecuted.

Deborah insists that North proceeded to mount a defense of the soldier. But, unlike debbie, our tivo doesn’t lie. Here are comments by Col North that came after the statements noted by deborah above, what she claims constitute a “defense”:

NORTH: No military organization, not in our country, whether its Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard, can allow that kind of thing to happen.
HANNITY: What I see here doesn’t look good, Col.
NORTH: No, it doesn’t.
NORTH: No US Military organization can ever have that kind of thing happen without some kind of action being taken to prevent it from happening again.
NORTH: It has me deeply concerned for two reasons. One, you can never have something like what is alleged take place without some kind of punishment....Two, this will become the story of Fallujah.
NORTH: The UCMJ is very clear. You cannot shoot wounded. There is no such thing as a mercy killing. There is no such thing as a reprisal killing. You cannot shoot somebody who is unarmed or unable to defend themselves.
NORTH: The Military Command out there, from that Battalion Commander on down, is deeply concerned about it. I can assure you that from the Battalion Commander on up they are deeply concerned about it. Because you cannot allow something like this to take place without stopping it dead in its tracks.

That’s quite a “defense” of the soldier, is it not? But deborah’s dissembling knows no bounds:
When Colmes mentioned the reality that Paul Bremer did ask for my [sic] troops, North started to talk about Vietnam, claiming that they did not ask for more in Vietnam.

COLMES: Didn’t Paul Bremer say that he asked for more troops? Zinni has talked about more troops, Abizaid has talked about more troops.
NORTH: Nobody in a position of military responsibility has come back to the President or the Secretary of Defense or the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and said I need more troops out here. And if they had, they’d have gotten them.
COLMES: All right, but we have security issues. Powell always said overwhelming force, exit strategy, though that’s the Powell Doctrine, that’s seen not to have been in play.
NORTH: Yeah, it was great in Gulf War I, but the fact is this is a different kind of war.

Where in the wide world of sports did deborah get the notion that North “started to talk about VietNam” and the troop strength there? She made it up!
Hannity and Ollie are always on the same page and their improv skills are outstanding....Then the boys smoothly turned to subject to WWII claiming that Iraq and WWII are similar.

Hannity didn’t turn the subject to World War II--Alan Colmes did! Mainly because Col North was there to promote:

COLMES: ...your new book, because you talk about issues having to do with World War II that have never really come to light. We fired first at Pearl Harbor...

At which point Oliver North and Alan Colmes went on to discuss what appears to be a most interesting tome, War Stories II: Heroism in the Pacific. Needless to say, debbie’s notion that North claimed “Iraq and WWII are similar” is another falsehood.

Once again, deb’s lies crumble when exposed to videotape (or in our case, tivo). But readers need not worry; there’s always more where that came from.

Partial transcript from "Hannity & Colmes," Nov. 15, 2004

North brings up WWII in comparison to the war conditions facing the troops in Iraq today, not Colmes. I do not, however, see any direct reference to Vietnam in the transcript.

For me, the major problem I have in the interview is North's claim that the terrorists whom beheaded kidnapees "got away with it" and will never see trial.

If that's the case -- kidnapping terrorists can get away with murder -- what are we accomplishing with conventional warfare in Iraq?

Full disclosure: North was there to briefly plug his book "War Stories II: Heroism in the Pacific" about the Pacific theatre in WWII. The Second World War was not entirely out of left field.
