Lie, Lady, Lie

Of all the Outfoxed hounds who "watch Fox so you don't have to", one is a particularly bad doggie.

We know that making up quotes and distorting what was said are among the most-used tools of the newshounds (another fine product from the Outfoxed syndicate). But not all of the eight self-described "middle-aged citizens" have attained the same heights of duplicity. Let's consider the case of "deborah", who has delivered one howler after another. Like this description of a Sean Hannity slug-fest with an anti-war veteran:
Christopher Gregory, Vietnam Veteran and Kerry supporter, is an articulate and well informed gentleman who seems to know alot [sic] about Kerry's role during and after the war....These comments were bellowed at Gregory while he was trying to defend Kerry with a completed sentence.... "I have a tape of Kerry saying he committed atrocities." "I have that tape. I'll bet you $100,000!" Comment: After watching Kerry's testimony tonight, Hannity's ravings seemed so absurd....Also, the testimony in context makes Hannity and Fox huge liars.

To see who lied, let's go to the Tivo:

GREGORY: There is not one eyewitness who contradicts him [Sen Kerry]...John Kerry never committed atrocities.
HANNITY: Let me read it to you; John Kerry: "I committed atrocities. I burned down villages."
GREGORY: You are making this up. He never said this; I was there in the room.
HANNITY: We have the tape of John Kerry in his own words saying he committed atrocities.
GREGORY: You do not have, no such tape exists.

The tape of course is from Kerry on Meet the Press and was seen by millions of people, re-aired on all the cable news networks repeatedly. You can even listen to the audio. But Deborah says Gregory is "well-informed" and Hannity is the "liar"?

Miss deborah is often fast and loose with the accusations. Just hours after posting that Oliver North was a "convicted felon", she grudgingly agreed with our suggestion that she withdraw the comment, while grousing about our "snide and disrespectful attitude". (Certainly no newspup would ever act in such a fashion.) And she is no paragon of accuracy. To wit this peculiar entry:
Laurie Dhue, during the news segment of Hannity&Colmes made a quick and cryptic comment. Dhue making a reference to a storm at the convention said, "The Weathermen are out of jail and in the Big Apple." What does that mean?

Deborah seems to be about as "well-informed" as Mr Gregory above. But don't let the quote marks fool you. Deborah is not giving you what Laurie Dhue actually said:

DHUE: A storm may be brewing for the Republican convention and you might want to blame the Weathermen. The New York Post reports members of the 70s anarchist organization which eventually became known as the Weather Underground, well, they're all now out of prison. And the paper says they're in the Big Apple, plotting to disrupt next week's events. The group bombed high profile buildings to protest the VietNam war in America.

Not quite so "cryptic" when you report Ms Dhue's words precisely. But deborah's strong suit is creative fiction. There are few who can match her expertise in "reporting" non-existent statements, as in this fascinating example:
Burke interviewed a vacationing woman from the U.S. who gave a different perspective, She said that before leaving for her trip, she was very concerned about terrorism in Italy. However since she has arrived, she has seen no evidence of that the Italian people are concerned and no mention of the terror threat at all. Burke quickly countered her comment, saying that Italy must cover up the problem to maintain tourism.

What Burke actually said didn't "counter" the woman and had nothing to do with covering up terrorism to maintain tourism:

BURKE: Hey Brian, well actually one of the interesting things is that tourists may not be concerned, but the Italian authorities are. And one of the reasons for that is precisely tourism and the business it brings in. After dropping numbers after 9/11, they're actually up in a big way. You can see the Colliseum behind me; what you can't see are the thousands of people that have passed through here in the last couple hours. The Italians know that if something were to happen here, some kind of bomb, they wouldn't see crowds like that here in a long time.

Deborah's latest assault on truthfulness came just today, where she whaled into Fox & Friends for another imaginary statement:
The breakfast bunch, as part of the Fox efforts to agitate the viewers against the protesters, actually lied this morning at 7:45AM. Announcing that the protesters won't be allowed in Central Park because they just started the application process yesterday and there just isn't enough time. Guess they were told make the protesters look flakey and irresponsible. Actually, Hannity interviewed an organizer weeks ago and he talked about the long application process.

Only it wasn't Fox & Friends who "actually lied". It was deborah. Because nobody ever said word one about "the application process started yesterday"--that was pure fiction. The comment in this segment being mangled by deborah was from Steve Doocy, who mentioned that a federal judge had just made a ruling against the Central Park location "because there was no time to put a half a million people there". (Oddly enough, a judge did rule that "allowing the protest on such short notice would create a security problem".) Not one word about the application process or when it started. OK, class, who "actually lied"?

Poor Miss Deborah. She can't help it. She was born with a forked tongue in her mouth.
