Eyes on the Prize

What is the purpose of the Outfoxed gang's focus on Fox? Media criticism, or raw politics?

When the great minds behind Outfoxed set up their newshounds web site, it was sold to its unwary readers as some sort of public service. Their manifesto sets forth what they claim to be their purpose:
Our hope is that you will visit this site regularly so that over time you will come to see, as we have, the ways in which Fox News in particular, lies and distorts its "news" reporting and spins in favor of the Republican party.

That's a fairly straightforward mission statement and it would lead one to conclude that in fact that site would be about Fox News. And to some extent it is, since they do attempt to expose what they claim are biases at FNC. But, as dozens of articles at our site prove conclusively, their "analysis" techniques are specious, shoddy, and often flat out factually wrong. And as we have dogged the hounds, revealing their falsehoods and puncturing their rhetorical balloons, there have been some subtle changes.

For one thing, they are now posting "summary" articles. One of the poodles will put up an extensive run-down of the stories that appeared on a given program, such as Studio B or Special Report. And that's pretty much it; just a listing of who was there, what was said, but nothing regarding any bias or unfairness in the broadcasts. But then a little "comment" at the end of the article will launch into a political issue:
The intent of [the Swiftboat veterans'] book is clearly to bring down Kerry by trashing his Viet Nam service, which is actually a big asset, and to neutralize any image of Kerry as a strong leader - which is the only area where Bush polls are strong.

[We] have red ink as far as the eye can see; it seems really odd to cut revenue. Another example of upside down and backwards politics; and worse, destruction of the national treasury.

And this demonstrates imbalance at Fox how? This analysis is supposed to make us believe that Fox is partisan?

But it gets better. Lately the anti-Fox terriers don't bother waiting for something to appear on FNC. They just can't resist, so they post articles that have nothing whatsoever to do with Fox News, such as:

Tax Burden Shifts to the Middle (commentary on the Congressional Budget Office figures)
Shame on the Swift Boat Veterans for Bush (an illegal reprint of Jim Rassman's Wall Street Journal column)
Let Them Eat Twinkies (propaganda from democrats.com...so much for subtlety!)
Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton & The Swift Boat Vets (yes, an article on Jon Stewart, the acclaimed newscaster)
Voices Not Being Heard (about an interview on PBS)
Swift Boat Vets Funding Stream (information gleaned from CNN)
Voters Guide to GWBush (reprint of an internet chain letter with such gems as "All records of my tenure as governor of TX have been spirited away to my father's library, sealed in secrecy & unavailable for public view"--a lie)
Democrats Promise to Cut Deficit by 50% (linking to a puff piece about Kerry's latest news release)
The "Bounce" Trampoline Isn't Concrete After All (trumpeting a Washington Post poll showing Kerry ahead)
Ron Reagan Speaks (links to a "stunning article" in Esquire where Junior bashes Bush)
Kerry and Edwards Drawing Record-Breaking Crowds (another reprint from democrats.com!)

These are just some examples from only the last ten days or so. What do any of them have to do with Fox? Zero. Zip. Nada. We think that if a careful reader played the old game of "what do these have in common?", he wouldn't have too much difficulty coming up with the answer. Because whatever phony pretense the "newshounds" claim for their little website, it's clear that their eyes are riveted on what for them is the ultimate prize. And their true agenda.
