Bride of Dirtier by the Dozen

More two-faced reportage by the Outfoxed mob, complete with dishonest quotes, and several cases of the hounds who did not bark.

In part two of our three-part series, the newshounds (another fine product of the Outfoxed squad) are fully living down to all expectations..

The newspoodles fulminate about Terry Keenan, who offered an analysis of Bill Gates's Microsoft dividend actions:
Based on a surmise about Bill Gates motives, Keenan says the following: "Well, ya' have ta' wonder, does Bill Gates think that John Kerry is going to be our next President, because, remember last week, when we were talking about the big stock dividend he was paying out to all his shareholders, including himself (he's going to get about $4 billion of it there with his wife)? But, $32 billion in stock dividends going out to Microsoft shareholders, something they've never done before. It's the biggest payout ever and, of course, it's going to be taxed at the 15% rate, the Bush rate, because it's going to be doled out to shareholders in December."...
In the documentary Outfoxed, Robert Greenwald includes a segment on FOX's frequent use of the words "some people" as a way to inject personal opinion into a news commentary. Here's a good example of that technique.
KEENAN: "And some people are starting to wonder 'Is Bill Gates doing this because he fears that a Kerry administration would raise these taxes, not to mention capital gains taxes which have down for the wealthy.?' John Edwards, in particular, has advocated raising capital gains taxes on people who make over $300,000 a year."...
One has to stand back in awe at the sheer malevolent genius of the FOX paradigm.

But is this a "personal commentary"? Is it a "remarkable" interpretation that flies in the face of everyone else's business reporting? Not quite. Quoth the New York Times:

"The prospect of Senator Kerry becoming president could be viewed by some companies as an incentive to pay out dividends this year," said Mr. Garay, who said he could not discuss Microsoft specifically because Deloitte audits its books. "It would be even more of an incentive," he continued, "for closely held companies whose owners will be directly affected" by large dividend payments, adding that there could be a flood of such dividends declared after a Kerry victory if there appeared to be a good chance that the tax law would be changed.

Similar analyses can be found at techcentral station and the International Herald Tribune. So it turns out that "some people" actually are saying what Ms Keenan reported "some people" to be saying.

Now a couple of entries where we took advantage of the "comments" option at the newspups site to challenge their peculiar spin--and the deafening silence that often results when that is done...

In an entry about RNC talking points, the media mastiffs attempt to emulate The Amazing Kreskin:

The RNC website has these topics that we should look for tonight at the convention....
Michael Dukakis. The instructions are vague but it's clear that Fox will mention him whenever possible.
  • j$: Yes, it is so crystal clear. How many mentions have you logged already? Give us the count and the amount! The only one I heard tonight was when Susan Estrich was introduced as his campaign manager.

Not surprisingly, no response from the anti-Fox terriers...odd, considering that they said "it's clear" that Fox would mention Dukakis over and over. Another example, regarding their belief that wives have some sort of dispensation from any criticism:
Contact them [advertisers] (maybe a new one each day) and tell them you are disappointed that they support this attack on Mrs. Kerry and that you will not tolerate any further attacks on any of the four campaign wives.
  • j$: I don't agree with that view, since wives who campaign and give speeches and such are inserting themselves into the political process. It's not like Mrs Kerry has been shy about it! But I can respect that IF that's your position. And if it is, you have an apology to make to Carl Cameron.
  • newshounds: A first-rate journalist and a first-rate news organization would not allow even the appearance of conflict of interest. Like it or not, fairly or not, his objectivity has been called into question by the disclosure of his wife's "hanging out" with the candidate's sister.
  • j$: When Greta van Susteren's post-convention show airs tonight, will you to put up a post saying that she should not be allowed to host the show because her husband campaigns for Kerry?
  • newshounds: [sounds of crickets]

Three days later and still no newshounds condemnation of Greta...I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.

Our final example is particularly gratifying. The whippets have been turning their venom on Alan Colmes's radio show; we haven't been monitoring it, but it appears they have been employing the same fraudulent chicanery we have come to know so well. Says who? Alan Colmes in an angry email to the newshounds:

I wish you would stop misrepresenting my radio show on your site. You selectively feature certain parts of my show and spin them, and ignore other parts of the show that would give a fuller picture of what I do each night....You accuse me this week of trashing Teresa Heinz Kerry, when that was not at all my position. Your headline last night, "Colmes Covers Coulter, not Clinton" is an outright lie. I carried more minutes of Bill and Hillary's speeches, live, than any other show on radio....
You call yourself liberal, but you are guilty of the same offense of which you accuse conservatives: telling selective truths and taking people (me) out of context. You are blatantly misrepresenting me to further your own agenda of denouncing whatever Fox does. You can't acknowledge the frequency with which I put on liberal guests and put forth views you actually agree with, because it doesn't fit with your agenda, which is to bash everything Fox does, including me. The premise of your site, that Fox is too blinded by its own agenda to be fair, is hypocritical as long as you are guilty of the same thing....
I've invited you on my radio show to discuss this with me publicly, but I guess it's much safer just to post and not to have to defend yourself, except on your own site and to the same twelve people who post each day....
Alan Colmes

Priceless.
