Say It Again, Ma'am

The gals from Outfoxed aren't much for accuracy, but they do have two new weapons for their jihad against Fox News: repetition and reiteration. Updated!

Today is a big day for the newshounds (another fine product from the Outfoxed mob); they are furiously churning out "reports". Why? It's the day of the big demonstrations in New York, and the gals can't wait to pounce on Fox for something. Apparently today's talking point is that Fox is not covering the marchers. Thus we hear from Melanie that "Fox Shuts Out the Protesters":
I just watched an hour (August 29, 2004 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET) of Fox News Weekend with host Brian Wilson. Since this is a "news" program, I was looking for coverage of the thousands upon thousands of protesters streaming down the street outside Madison Square Garden, where this show originated....While a few words were spoken during this show about the "people outside," no coverage whatsoever was given to the protesters or the issues they are concerned about.

First of all, the program is Weekend Live, not "Fox News Weekend". (Melanie was really paying close attention.) And as for the "no coverage whatsoever" claim--it was only the lead story!

BRIAN WILSON: Let us take you down to midtown Manhattan, where the pictures are rather astonishing of the protesters who have arrived outside of Madison Square Garden. The pictures you see are protesters, and these protesters go for blocks, and blocks, and blocks, and blocks, all gathering here to protest the candidacy of George Bush and the Republican GOP Convention...

More live pictures and coverage at 12:03 and 12:23. At 12:35 pm David Lee Miller contributes a live report from 7th avenue. All of this is summarized by Melanie as "Fox Shuts Out the Protesters".

A few hours later, another houndette, nancy, drives home the theme of the day:
At 6:00pm tonight (8/29), I did a compare/contrast of what was being broadcast on the major networks. Here's a surprise: Fox still isn't covering the protests in NYC....Nope, as far as Fox is concerned, what's going on right outside their windows might as well be on another planet.

But can anyone trust the word of the Outfoxed gang?

At 2:07 pm another live report from David Lee Miller at Union Square. More live coverage at 3:05, again at 3:53 and after a commercial break at 3:58 a Fox News Alert with, of all things, still more live coverage! Another report with live and taped footage at 4:36, and another Fox News Alert at 4:46 with, you guessed it, even still more live coverage.

And if one is going to compare network newscasts, then shouldn't the comparison be made to The Fox Report, FNC's nightly news hour--where the protests were, again, the lead story?

But all that means nothing, because nancy says Fox wasn't covering the protesters.

The gals from Outfoxed are in a tough spot. No more can they just make up stuff that no one will bother to fact-check. So now they are spinning like a compass over the Bermuda Triangle, desperately repeating their talking points in the hope they can drown out the truth.

But shoddy research and false reporting are not rendered credible just by repetition. The newspoodles can protest about Fox all day long (and they do), but as usual the ladies doth protest too much.

Update: Melanie took issue with our analysis, and we had a little go-round:

JD: You might note that the times I watched were between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. ET. When you comment on what Fox did during an hour I didn't watch or include in my post, it's a little off subject.

You didn't write there was no coverage between 1 and 2, you wrote that there was no coverage "during this show". There was. (By the way, the program is Weekend Live, NOT Fox News Weekend).

JD: Ridiculious [sic] and you know it. It is perfectly clear from the top of my post I am writing about the hour I watched. You are making a fool of yourself here. You'd do well to know when to stop. TO ALL READERS - this is precisely why it makes no sense to engage JD in a discussion. It's crazy making and one just goes around and around endlessly.

If that's what you meant, then why is this site claiming that as of 6 pm FNC was "still not covering the protesters", when it's clear they have been doing so all day? (Granted, that other post is not yours. Still it's part of a pattern.) If you re-read my original post, you'll find that I didn't take issue with your 1-2 pm summary. I took issue with the headline: "Fox Shuts Out the Protesters". That is your headline, is it not? Is that headline accurate, given the coverage that the protesters got in the very show you were writing about?

I DON'T SPEAK FOR "THIS SITE." THAT IS MY HEADLINE FOR THE ONE HOUR MY POST WAS ABOUT. MY SUMMARY "FOX SHUTS OUT PROTESTERS" WASN'T ABOUT FOX'S COVERAGE OF PROTESTERS OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS, IT WAS ABOUT THE ONE HOUR WHICH MY POST WAS ABOUT! PERIOD.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE! I mean, thank you for your response. It is interesting, however, that your post about Weekend Live only dealt with one hour--not the hour where the protests were repeatedly covered but the hour where they weren't. And then Nancy's post dealt with Fox News Live, and, by amazing coincidence, also only dealt with one hour--not the other three hours where they protesters were repeatedly covered but the one hour where they weren't. Things that make you go Hmmmmmmm.

YOU'RE MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLE HILL. I HAPPENED TO HAVE A DAY SUCH THAT I HAD AN HOUR TO DEVOTE TO WATCHING FOX AND THE SECOND HOUR WAS WHAT I LANDED ON. NO CONSPIRACY. AGAIN, THERE'S NO COMPLICATED PLAN GOING ON HERE. THESE ARE THE SHOWS WE INDIVIDUALLY DECIDED TO COVER ON A DAY WHEN WE USUALLY DON'T "WORK" AT ALL. RELAX! GO HMMMMMMMM ALL YOU WANT.

Hmmmmmm.
