A Touch of Frost

Once again, inconvenient facts are the undoing of a dubious dogmatist.

Recently Texas Democrat Martin Frost appeared on Fox News, and it was mentioned that he has signed up to be a Fox News Contributor. This announcement, predictably, sent the Fox-haters into spin overdrive. We know that their mantra--Fox is simply right-wing propaganda--is demonstrably false. But they must continue to hoodwink the sheep.

So comes the ever-reliable Oliver Willis, to paint the precise picture his parishoners want to hear:
More Phony Dems On Fox: Martin Frost, along with Susan Estrich, Alan Colmes, and Pat Caddell make up the Washington Generals to Fox's Globetrotters. Only thing I dislike more than a right-winger is a "liberal" who enables right-wingers.

What exactly Mr Willis means by "phony Dems" (assuming that is not simply a tautology) remains unclear. Susan Estrich, Michael Dukakis's campaign manager, who screeched on Fox that George Bush was a draft dodger? Is that not gutter-level enough to establish Ms Estrich's Dem credentials for Mr Willis?

Of course, selectivity is the key to Oliver's outburst. This would be why he brings up Caddell, but for some reason doesn't mention other Fox contributors: Ellen Ratner, Eleanor Clift, Geraldine Ferraro (who was only the party's Vice-Presidential nominee), or David ("Bush Lies") Corn. Perhaps they are also "phony Dems".

And then there's Congressman Frost, whom Mr Willis would have one believe is little more than a pusillanimous turncoat. But we checked what should be an authoritative source, the yearly ratings from the Americans for Democratic Action. They tally the key votes and annually grade Congressmen and Senators for fealty to the liberal cause.

What does their research tell us about Martin Frost? In 2002, he received an ADA rating of 95%. A pretty impressive score, higher than that of his Texas colleague Lloyd Bentsen--aha, another "phony Dem"! In fact, it's a more liberal rating than those phonies Dick Gephardt and Dennis Kucinich.

In 2003, the latest ratings year on the ADA site, Frost again scored 95%. The same rating as those other "phony Dems" Shiela Jackson-Lee and Edward Kennedy. And again, more liberal than Dennis Kucinich. Plus Frost came in at 93% pro-labor according the AFL-CIO, and NARAL gave this "phony Dem" a perfect 100% rating.

A few hard facts can cause unsubstantiated ravings to collapse into rubble. Sort of like kryptonite to stupid.

I hardly ever see Ratner or Corn, Clift is not very good, nor is Ferraro. Estrich writes for Newsmax. Nuff said.

johnny dollar
Ratner is one of the FNC contributors who actually has a regularly scheduled weekly appearance (plus whatever other times they use her). Corn was just on the other day, and of course it was in the FNC green room when he ran into Armstrong Williams and got a very quotable quote.
As for Ferraro or Clift not being very good, that's an opinion--and a convenient one at that, since it deftly changes the subject from whether they are "phony Dems".

Ratner is on every Saturday morning with Jim Pinkerton at least... Ratner has also had a press pass to the White House briefing room as recently as last month, for something called the "Talk Radio News Service."
