Whither OlbyWatch? (Update: New Info)

What happened to Olbermann Watch? Updated! A new message from Mr Cox.

If you've visited Olbermann Watch today, you might have noticed something has changed. It isn't there!

We have posted at that site for years, thanks to Mr Robert Cox who gave us the opportunity to expose Keith Olbermann. Our hope was that, by shedding light on Keith's hypocrisy, bias, and lies, that he would be seen for what he is: a partisan propagandist, and not a "journalist" or even a "newsman". We kept a running count of his political guests: a long stream of dozens of Democrats, interrupted at one point by a Republican (who was there only to discuss his call for Rumsfeld's removal). We documented Olbermann's use of blue blogs as "news sources", and the attempt to team up with moveon.org to boost his viewership. We collected his vitriolic, mean-spirited personal attacks into an "Olbersaurus", then took the best and used them back at Olbermann himself. (Apologists for Olbermann who ridiculed our "name calling" were the source of endless amusement. They were totally oblivious to the fact that the names we called were the ones Keith himself used on others, and by ridiculing us they were actually ridiculing the "infamous, deplorable" Keith Olbermann.) We caught Keith more times than anyone could count reporting a story as fact that wasn't, and not correcting or retracting it when the truth came out. This was especially true of the 150+ times he attacked Bill O'Reilly, attacks that were frequently based on fabrications or outright lies. But Keith's lies weren't limited to Mr Bill; we had scores of them to sift through when we named Olbermann's top ten lies of 2006.

Olbermann Watch has served a useful purpose. Keith, who used to claim he was "nonpartisan", just this week admitted that, yes, he is a liberal. And Olbermann Watch stood as the Number One Olbermann blog on the internet, with many regular readers--including Keith himself (who was caught lifting stories, and even media clips, from the site, without acknowledgment of course). But despite all of the above, not only did NBC award this partisan poseur a new contract, they actually expanded his reach by giving him a commentary spot on NBC. Mr Cox now believes that Olbermann Watch may have done more harm than good, actually increasing public awareness of Keith (the theory of "there's no such thing as bad publicity"). In any event, here is Mr Cox's statement:
There is no disguising the fact that we have been extremely unhappy with the recent decision of NBC Universal to not only retain Keith Olbermann for four more years but to elevate him in an unprecedented fashion. We had held out hope that MSNBC would allow Olbermann's contract to expire even up until the last few weeks. But the deal is done and our Countdown Clock expired at midnight on March 1, 2007.

Given this, we have come to the conclusion that we have done more harm than good over the past 2+ years in keeping Olbermann in the public eye at a time when few were watching his show and even less cared about his assault on the journalistic standards we hold dear. So, after careful consideration and consultation with the entire staff, we have decided the time has come to retire OlbermannWatch.com.

It's been a great run. We certainly had a lot of fun running the site but it's just been increasingly difficult to maintain our enthusiasm as Olbermann's ratings have increased and a compliant media has done everything to boost Olbermann and his show.

We wish all of you the best over the next four, painful years.

Robert A. Cox
Managing Editor

Update: Mr Cox has just issued a new message:

Can't believe you are going to let a propagandist like KeithO run around without any checks and balances. Surely it made your stomach churn to watch him blurt out his deceptions, but you did a great documenting them. Now he has broken his leash. Look out. We can only hope he gets hit by a car.

Well I wouldn't go that far. I think being fired by NBC would be enough.

Maybe make a section of this site a olbermann watch??Seems a shame since KO provides so much lies and great stuff to print.

That's too bad... I really enjoyed your show summaries.
The abrupt nature of the shutdown sure was disapointing (and not particularly sensitive to the site's fans). And Robert's letter also left something to be desired... it had me thinking that the OWatch site had been hacked and that an Olbyloon was spoofing a Robert Cox shutdown letter.
If the decision to shut down was financial, I wish we would have had a chance to contribute to help the site contine.
Oh Well. I agree with a previous commenter. I'd love to keep reading your show summaries... they were excellently done and very funny.

I bet tonight's Countdown will be more unbalanced than ever. Keith will preach his lies as though there will be no recourse. I can't watch.
If the site was the reason for his ratings rise (as small as they were) I am happy it's gone. He deserves a future similar to Air America.
PS. Agreed on financial. Would have donated to keep it up.

Whatever. Find another way to waste your time instead of twisting what Keith says during the show. But, by all means, keep watching. A lot of other people are.

I will miss the site. Olbermann needs someone to hold him accountable and now his KRAZIES will think they've forced yet another website off the internet. They are as dangerous as he is. Tormenting them with the TRUTH about Olbermann was one of my favorite hobbies. I don't know why Bob made the decision but I wish he'd reconsider.

Dissapointed. I even made a list that was going to be posted on the wbsite --- well --- here goes nothing:
Countdown's off screen disturbance guide:
Issue #4: A 'wih' when Olbermann quiped that the Jury wanted moire post it notes as an attempt to plug the toilet.
Oddball: Multiple giggles audible when Mr. Olbermann related to a racist comment from a baseball player.
Issue #3: After Keith Olbermann reads aloud his book jacket quote, a female laugh is heard. Also, Keith Olbermann makes a noise like a 'swoosh'.
Tabs: While the noise did not come from an actual person, it is still an example of bad standards---
Issue #1: Creepy laughter. Olbermann's staff has to know what "on air" means for the show !!!!!

Thank you, Mr. Cox (and JD, of course) for your hard work. Does this mean I have to watch that wretched program myself now?
JD, you were the heart and soul of Olbywatch. Why don't you just take it over yourself? There is precedent for this. Think of Mario Lemieux.

Since your comments were actually the real OLBYWATCH, please consider continuing these on your site. I know we all would rest a lot easier if you did and, as William just said above, it would sure save us a lot of time and aggrevation of watching the damned spin hour. Hey, I'd glad chip ina few bucks!!!

Agree with the previous poster... I'd love to see your summaries continue (impressive writing, funny as hell).
And, I really really disagree with Mr. Cox in his "we're done" letter when he drew the unbelievable conclusion that OWatch had "done more harm than good". I, for one, think that the best way to marginalize (and someday eliminate) the brand of "reporting" done by Olbermoron is to expose it and make fun of it. Olby may be attracting more loons to his show but, thanks to OWatch, vastly more people have come to realize what a leftard buffoon he really is...

I hope you will at least consider doing Olbermann write-ups on this page JD. It kept me from having to watch that dreadful show. I don't understand either how Cox came to the conclusion he was helping Olbermann and wonder if there was something else going on behind-the-scenes that we weren't informed of. I know the site will be very much missed amongst us clear-thinkers.

Here is what I wrote in part about the departure of OlbermannWatch from the blogosphere:
"I honestly am disappointed that Mr. Cox has decided to end OlbermannWatch. I, for one, appreciated his documentation of Keith Olbermann’s continual assault against truth. I tried watching Countdown for a week but couldn’t complete the whole week due to Olbermann’s overwhelming arrogance, vitriol and complete lack of honesty. The man exhibits all the worst traits of the stereotypical used car salesman with twice the smarminess. MSNBC felt the need to extend his contract and that is their perogatave. However considering his ratings remains one of the lowest on cable news and MSNBC, from top to bottom, is basically the bargain basement of cable television then in the grand scheme of things, Olbermann & MSNBC aren’t significant enough on which to waste time. I looked at reactions in the blogosphere and noted many well-known liberal blogs and pro-Olbermann blogs crowing over Mr. Cox’s decision. In their comments, I also noticed a great amount of misrepresentations and lies concerning Mr. Cox, OlbermannWatch and its contents in general. I need not defend Mr. Cox and OlbermannWatch from such disingenuousness from the extreme left. The facts speak for themselves. The extreme liberals can vent their hatred and vitriol as they are wont to do. They can lie and write untruths. That is what they do. It’s their nature. It’s abhorrent and there’s nothing I nor anyone can do to change them. However this shows why liberalistic extremism never wins. It is also one of the main reasons I find liberalism of that nature repugnant, repulsive and plan evil. I loathe such liberalism and will continue to oppose it.
I thank all those who contributed to OlbermannWatch and wish them all well. I sincerely hope someone will take up the banner, so to speak, and continue to document Olbermann’s activities and expose his continued dishonest and hateful nature."

I decided to visit one of the liberal sites Carl was talking about and stumbled on an anti-OW website. As I read through the haughty, hateful, gloating, arrogant posts, one stood out:
“…there was no expression of appreciation for the regular readers who … made his blog what it was.
No apologies. No expression of regret or the slightest sign of any acknowledgment that (their) words… do indeed have an impact.”
(Edited to remove pointless insults against OW)
There is some truth in that statement. It’s the reason the commenters here are protesting. It’s the regulars who enjoyed johnny’s analytical expositories mixed with good sarcasm who lost here. There was article after article with hundreds of comments each, and all of those people were left hanging with a short message from RCox.
I think the problem may be that the site took an enormous amount of dedication for just a few people (mostly johnny) to make possible. I would have burned out long ago watching and analyzing Olby every night. If it’s even possible for the site to return, it would probably need more contributors. It’s a double edged sword however, because not everyone has the quality of writing style that people have come to expect from OW contributors.

Also, you don't count political guests on Fox News, so quit bitching. If you did, you'd see that Fox News is just as one-sided.

The delicious irony of JDP's postmortem on Olbermann Watch leaves me in stitches.
Here we have a fan site devoted to hero worship of Fox News, a network featuring any number of conservative data mining propagandists, tossing a minor fit over liberal data mining propagandist Keith Olbermann. Is there something about liberal propaganda that somehow makes it worse than the conservative variety you're addicted to?
Cox's goodbye is pretty funny too. He indicates one motivation for shutting down the site is fear he's popularizing Olbermann's show when common sense dictates his real frustration must be the impotence of his site. The site rails against Olbermann from the beginning yet he thrives like never before.

J$- A "great thanks" goes out to you for OlbyWatch. For the last 6 months, I had more fun snarking on that site than any other wingnut blog. You're quickly posted synopsis of Countdown will forever leave me impressed. You really helped create a place where people of all backgrounds and intellectual levels could argue like a family reunion gone horribly wrong.
Take care, and I'll snark with ya in other time/place.
Also, I noticed the "roadkill" you left behind at OlbyWatch was a possum. Is the site really gone, or are you just playing "possum"?

I agree w/cecilia, kinda sudden/abrupt closing of the site. I thought it was very funny when an olbbyloon made a post the last night on OW saying that Olby "couldn't care less about this site" referring to olbermannwatch. The very next morning on WOW Olby had his little celebration post already added right at the top of the page. I think he cared about OW a great deal! P.S. Nice try, Burger King, coward watch and o'leily, go post at newshole or puffington.

I've seen people from both sides say how that their posts would get deleted at sites. One thing everyone has to admit, at olbermannwatch. It was free speech.
I don't care what side your from. You have to say. A little bit of your freedom went away when that site shut down.

OlbermannWatch Cryptic Image
Interesting. If one goes to OlbermannWatch today, one will see the image above. Could this be a cryptic message from Robert Cox and Company that OlbermannWatch isn’t truly dead but is merely playing possum? {And if you don’t know what “playing possum” is, look it up.} Stay tuned. This may get interesting.
ADDENDUM: I looked at some blogs to see if they have noticed this image and several have. But many of them, amusingly enough, fail to recognize the animal as a possum (more properly spelled as opossum) and even more amusingly have no clue as to the term “playing possum.” So as a public service to those unfamiliar with the term:
play possum, Informal.
to feign sleep or death
Let’s see where this leads. It may be nothing. It may mean something. As far as I can fathom, only God and Robert Cox know for certain.
I am, however, astounded by the intentional misinformation, misrepresentations, vitriol and other negativies being written on numerous anti-OlbermannWatch blogs and by anti-OlbermannWatch bloggers. It’s astounding, but frankly not surprising.
