The MSNBC staffers getting all choked up about Obama is just like CNN and MSNBC's reporters nearly cried when Bush won in 2000/2004.

If Fox did that for a republican, there'd be hell to pay. For the liberal MSM however, it's par for the course. I hope the mutts write an article about the acceptable double standard.

And Tim Russert said that in the context of the nation's "history of race," this moment is "breathtaking."

Yes, the 15 year old boy in Kenya was seeing history being made.A black man with a very good chance of becoming the next President of the United States is unprecedented,in both American and world history.

Europeans have dominated the world stage for the past 4 centuries. And now an African man is on the brink of becoming the leader of one of those European derived nations.Whether you like Obama, dislike him,or actively hate him,you still have to admit that this is an historic moment.

I was fairly emotional myself last night. Not so much because of an ideological victory as the fact that an African-American had secured the nomination. Even a year ago, I did not think I would see that happen in my lifetime. I am willing to excuse the 45+ gang getting emotional. We've saw Selma, the March on Washington, the assassinations. We, or many of us, see African-Americans now accepted and welcomed in our homes and churches and places we gather, and not just in the kitchen or as servers. We saw George Wallace, Lester Maddox, Bull Connor, and we see their foul progeny and soul mates today.

Maybe I am wrong about this, but I think that is why we have Matthews, Russert and Brokaw choking up a bit. My sense is that is out of this well-spring of pride for our nation and all we have become. A promise fulfilled, a new luster for the shining city on the hill. The moment was highly patriotic, but it was also personal for the 45+ crowd (at least for those of us of a more enlightened mindset).

Perhaps, they still should have kept their composure, but when President Kennedy was assasinated and Cronkite choked up as he was delivering the news, I wasn't offended. Cronkite was conveying my own heaviness of heart and my own pain. Matthews, Brokaw and Russert were conveying my own pride last night. And, the pride was so immense that my heart burns even this morning.

Maybe, we are right to raise the possibility of a double standard, but given the right circumstances, I am not so sure I would find it offensive for the FNC people to choke up over a Republican nominee or distinctly Right-gratifying experience. Having said that, I have to admit, I don't know what those circumstances would be. Oliver North having his conviction set aside? Justice Scalia delivering a majority opinion legitimizing black hole prisons? I know that is offensive and borders on the ridiculous, but I am at a loss to find a Republican parallel in 2008. I seem to recall Hume getting syrupy over Reagan's Altzheimer letter, and I do recall Barnes going weepy and weak-kneed over Reagan's death. That didn't bother me.

So, yes, F/F if this were about a philosophical emotional outburst, I'd be with you 100%. As a profound moment of pride for our nation and our culture, I'm going to give the guys a pass. In fact, if I saw Matthews, Brokaw and Russert this morning, I might even give them a big bear hug.

Conservatives aren't impressed by "First [PIGEON HOLE CATEGORY] person to be nominated"

We're not interested in these classifications.. we're interested in what your agenda is. We're interested in how you're going to lead the government and conduct a foreign policy.

We're not interested in your genitals or your skin color. It seems Democrats are obssesed by these thigns..which explains their emotional outbursts of calling everyone around them racist and sexist.

It's a shame the Dems have nominated THIS black man , because he's so far off-the-charts he will lose handilly. Quote me.

Well now that the euphoria from the cleansing of shame for centuries of atrocity, duplicity and hatred has occurred, how about having a serious evaluation of who is best to serve the citizens as chief executive?

For more on the above psychic process, please see "Obama the 'Magic Negro'" by David Ehrenstein....

Senator McCain has challenegd SNOBamessiah to a series of townhall debates....So far only Axelrod has nonspecificially responded.

If there is more to SNOBaemssiah's candidacy than being the first black to successfully BECOME PRESDENT, then the next 5 months should be more than staged campaign rallies, platitudes and tearful journalists....it should be about all the hundreds of issues, both personal and public, these men are facing and which show their character and ideology.

Well, since you saw fit to post this twice,I'll just repeat my previously used reply, judging from your nickname for Sen Obama,I'd have to assume that you've already made up your mind.

There may be some truth to what Mr Ehrenstien writes about assuaging white guilt, but that is only a very small part of the motivation of Obama supporters.Policy motivates most,Iraq and health care being the biggies.

The more intangable appeal of Sen Obamas candidacy is unity. This country has been bitterly divided racially. The optimism of the 60's and 70's over desegregation gave way to 'white flight',and in many ways to resegregation.Anything that gets large crowds of blacks and whites together feels hopeful.

This country is also bitterly divided politically. Many see the current administration functioning as a political operation that has intentionally divided our nation.Sen Obamas speeeches about the essential unity of the red states and the blue states sounds like a breath of fresh air after the divisions of the past 15 years.

Once again, I agree with you, NVH, and I would only add that the "unity" of which you speak includes the end of the rancor and bitterness of both the Clintonian and Rovian eras, and it also includes a shared vision, an "us" going forward, as opposed to the "me" clinging to what I have of the last, I suppose, 28 years.

Good riddance ot those eras.

Watching and listening to a several media personalities during the last couple of weeks, particularly Dobbs, Hannity, Ingraham, Limbaugh and O'Reilly, the ugliness, divisiveness and rancor already seem to be dated, to be old, tired, ineffective, to be relics of a time better passed and remembered realistically. In some sense, the change may have already occurred, and I am not sure that Clinton or McCain had or have the power to stop the process, as much as they would like to try.

What impresses me most about this site, as opposed to an Olbermann Watch or a News Hounds, is the degree to which most of the posters here, of both philosophical camps and all the gradations, are ready to move ahead, and, indeed have moved ahead. The few malingerers who so adore and cling to the rancor and divisiveness are being rapidly and thankfully left far behind. To them I say "Come on aboard the Cannonball, join in, or stay forever in Hooterville."

If he was a more moderate democrat and not an ideologue, notverynow, I would agree with you that he could be an agent for unity. I was even open to that possibility in the beginning when the primaries started and looked forward to an Obama/McCain contest. However, since I have found out more about his rise in power in Chicago politics, I see a very disturbing pattern of associations with the radical left, racist black liberation theology and The Nation of Islam. Also, his stand on the war in 2002 was politically expedient and he basically dropped that radical stand as a US Senator in 2006 simply opposing the surge while still funding the war effort. This showed NO leadership ability.

The crowds are staged. His 75K in Oregon was largely because of a free concert Portland band The Decemberists yet the press did not inform viewers of this fact. Even last night, the planned event was filled with volunteers and the information of the rally was disseminated through his well oiled machine. The "faces" of different races are all choreographed by his handlers as supported by people who have said they were chosen to sit behind his lecturn based on their race or gender.

I am not impressed by staged events. Also, if SNOBamessiah was unifying the country, why did he only get 50% of the popular vote even as his nomination seemed inevitable. Why do racially and economically diverse states like PA and Ohio still show great splits, with the poor republican branded McCain still very competitive? Ideologically, SNOBamessiah is way out of the mainstream and people still find a person's BELIEFS important.

That is why I believe we will see him avoid direct, unscripted debates with McCain. Taking him out of the superificial staged rallies makes him very vulnurable. Look for a long negotiation to these townhall events with McCain holding his feet to the fire.

Do you think the seats behind John Sidney are filled first come first serve?

Opposing the war in 02 was politically risky.Who knew it would turn out THIS badly. As for opposing the surge but voting to fund the troops, jeez, that is a tough one.If you vote against funding the troops you will be painted as a troop hater, terrorist supporting anti-American,and the next soldier killed because of an unarmored Humvee would be laid at your feet.Plus the certainty that there are not enough votes to cut off funding anyway. It's a conundrum.

Now the point about 100 years of war based on John Sid...,Sen McCain's statement,is a little unfair.he said if no one was shooting at them,we could stay for a hundred years.

However, the unanswered question is,how many years DO we stay there while people ARE shooting at us.

For a local politician in a very liberal part of Chicago, his position was not risky. He made his speech at a very radical anti-war rally in 2002. As a US Senator in 2006 he was then challenged to either stand with those same anti-war ideologues and oppose the further running of the war the ONLY way possible by the legislature....side with Ted Kennedy and oppose funding unless withdrawl occurred, or do what he did.....make a speech but go along with the surge while predicting it would fail. I think the luke-warm response in the middle says a lot about the man and it does not look good!

McCain took a VERY unpopular position in 2006 knowing it would get results later, and it is, in 2008, Iraq is moving towards success. Communicating this truth through the bias media will be tough but I think possible.

SNOBamessiah was luke warm AND wrong in 2006, he sided with the hand-wringers instead with the men of action like Kucinich. That was his mistake. If withdrawl was forced on Bush in 2006/2007 we could have seen the results...it was not and instead Bush did everything he and the Generals on the ground wanted and we are seeing success...with numbers of troops going down in success, not surrender.

Iraq is a deserving ally of our aid and protection from radicals and thank goodness we did not follow the path of surrender.

I wish everyone would oblige, Johnny, but they'd rather have the to-and-fro. If we had registered commenters, maybe we could stay on the topic of cable news.
I read "The Cable Game" post early this morning. It was good. Unfortunately, I don't know what else to say. I'm under tremendous pressure to somehow get on the topic of cable news. It'll be in vain anyway. It always is.

I agree that frequent townhall debates would be hugely advantageous to McCain. Obama has been the beneficiary of a huge marketing campaign. The more Obama is allowed to be vague in the kind of change he wants for America, the better he looks. When Obama is forced to be specific, he loses more votes than he gains. While Obama is not a bad or horrible impromptu speaker, he is far less effective when he is forced to speak without notes.

I really try to abide by the rules. The problem is Cable News is a little vague. What is or isn't related to cable news is subject to interpretation. Under the broadest interpretation, everything is related to cable news. It would help if someone would publish a list of issues that would be acceptable to discuss.

There is no list of issues. As I've said in the past, we recognize that discussions about cable news sometimes drift off into related topical issues. But back and forths about politics, Obama, McCain, the Iraq war, etc, and not what we are about. And that's why I try to steer people to discussing cable news programs, personalities, and how they cover the news of the day, as opposed to talking about the news of the day itself. At least that's the plan.

Keeping fighting the good fight, Mike, and excuse my departures from the topic, if you will. I am awfully fired up and positive today, and our tiresome repeat whiners, moaners and naysayers are not diminishing that.

As for the registration, I'm all for it, but it is not going to accomplish your objective. OW has a draconian, stringent registration process that has virtually chocked the site, but you still see the same handful of posters just moving their baggage, including a frightening amount of racism, but other abnormalities and foibles as well, from one corner to the next and never really going anywhere, in a trite and tiresome melodrama.
---
More to the point, as to:

I wonder if they [the pundits, commenters and anchors] would get all choked up if it was a black Republican.,

of course, they would, and you have absolutely no indication otherwise. Shame on you for suggesting that.

And, also, as to Greta, and I will have to confess I once held her in high regard and have long thought she compromised herself, not by going to FNC, but by accepting a show format that is by design and implementation one of the most prurient and tawdry on cable news, akin roughly to MSNBC's horrendous and filthy prison doc block.

There are some signs she is breaking out of that nasty mould, and I hope she does. Greta can be very good.

I suspect that Senator Obama is not inclined to go on Greta because of:

1. The inherent sleaziness of her show.

2. The fact that Greta's husband is a big Clinton contributor and advisor.

Greta's high-handed and self-serving proclamation of journalistic integrity to the tune she reran Wright ad nauseum because it took that to get Senator Obama's attention is misplaced and condescending. If she ran it because she mistakenly thought it engendered interest and was newsworthy, so be it. But, it isn't her business to change anyone's behavior. She has obviously turned into less of a journalist than I thought. Perhaps, someone ought to start a "Greta Watch" blog to try to keep her in line.

Um, on the topic of cable news:

I saw a post bemoaning the lack of MSNBC's objectiveness. When O'Reilly uses the terms "far-left loon" "radical left" etc. more than he uses the word "the" in a show, don't you think he's got an objecitivity problem? Or what about Brit Hume, Fred Barnes, and Krauthammer on "Special Report"? Or how about Hannity's agenda setting on Hannity and Colmes? Or Cavuto's show? Or Gibby when he had a show? Or basically the whole network? Is Olbermann biased? Well, of course he is. That's not even questionable. But by implying that the whole channel is "in the tank" (like the majority of people on the right do) is ridiculous. I've heard Matthews gush over Bush, McCain, etc plenty of times. Tucker Carlson used to have his own show. Scaraborough still has one.

So, they have one guy who's ideologically as far to one side of the political spectrum as a whole channel is to the other side. You people are pretty selective in your outrage.

And about the townhall thing:

Yeah, McCain would do great when he starts talking about change. Obama will just state the fact that he's voted along with Bush's agenda 95% of the time in 2007. Case closed. The first black man to head the Harvard Law review against a guy who claims to be an expert on Iraq who doesn't know the difference between Sunni and Shia or the number of troops there. Should be fun.

Oh, go ahead and read Haggis Farmer, On The Clucker. You've spent less than 24 hours in this new uncynical world of the politics of sweetness of light, rather than of partisan personal destruction, and have still managed to find few redeeming qualities for any cable media figure who wasn't in the Obama camp with both feet... and whether in ecstatic political outbursts, alternating with unctuous criticisms, alternating with insincerity, have continued to show yourself to be a political zealot of a particularly singular stripe. Far beyond the scope of we tyros here and never more than when you're denouncing the notice of that fact, as some of over-adherence to the baggage of rules...

Though American may have awoken to a new era, On The Clucker, there will not be an iota of change in you.

Though I've no doubt that you may, indeed, be actually hoping for it.

Larry Johnson?!? He was never a war contributor on Fox. He was a terrorism analyst, and one who said, shortly before 9/11, that Usama Bin Laden was not a threat. His contract was not renewed. They never paid him without using him.

By the way, were you aware that on his website the other day he praised Fox News for having the fairest election coverage? Doesn't sound like a fired disgruntled employee to me.

Documentation please. It's not enough to claim something if it's just a made up statement. Not that one might not lose confidence in an analyst who claimed UBL was not a threat and then came 9/11. I probably would've thought his analysis was a bit suspect myself. But this war contributor, who morphed into a terrorism analyst...please document that they paid him but didn't use him "during this period". Oh, and what period was that, exactly?

Well here's the true facts on Johnson. He was used on Fox throughout 2002. I don't have access to the transcripts but even in Outfoxed he references appearing in November of that year. His contract expired at the end of December. Point one: MOST of the Fox contributors probably didn't work that last month of 2002. A lot of contributors, only so much air time. So no cause effect shown.

Point two: he was not a war contributor. Point three: if Haggis wants to claim that because he was not used over the holidays he has proved his case, let him. But remember what I wrote in the 'beckel bombshell' thead: nothing Johnson says should be believed without several large grains of salt. So his CLAIM that he didn't work those last weeks of 2002 is about on the same factual level as his claim that Michelle Obama ranted about "whitey" while sharing the stage with Louis Farrakhan. I won't believe it without confirmation from a more reliable source.

There is no way to debate someone who relies on outfoxed and alGore for news. Period. Or, bbc for that matter. Or, the chubby orange faced hack.

Your (sic) canned. - Haggis

We're supposed to believe someone who has an agenda against Fox 3 years after he's canned in a hate-Fox "documentary" that's been proven as lying propaganda; a video which spawned a site that lies about Fox every day (with video proof here).

Canned yet again, Haggis.

Actually, you took it completely out of context. He said that the claim was not to be trusted and was not from a reliable source.

"if Haggis wants to claim that because he was not used over the holidays he has proved his case, let him. Damn. I didn't think you noticed but I guess they're caught. They have a special editing suite where they electronically stick flags behind McCain before they show any video of him. And just to make it doubly evil, they get the flags by removing them from shots of Obama. Another Fox trick exposed! Alert the hounds!!
