Challenge: What Does This Mean?

This is a challenge to observant, knowledgeable cable news buffs. How good are you at reading between the lines? Something struck us about the following clip. Watch it, then tell us what you make of it.

To set it up, this aired yesterday on America's Election HQ (5:00 pm). Each day they do a segment on talk radio's hot political topics, and this was Friday's:

Comments are open!

Sometimes the video will pop up immediately; sometimes you have to give it a minute or so to appear.

Here's a hint as to what I am driving at... it's not the content of the substantive discussion (Obama, Democrats, Republicans, etc) that struck me. It's something else.

His show, The Big Story was not referenced at the end.

It was not referenced at the end. He was described simply as a radio talk show host. Do you think this means what Jill thinks? Also, remember that Big Story aired in that 5:00 pm time slot .

How much do you guys want to bet that America's Election HQ will be continuing through this coming week?

I watched that segment yesterday and was dumbfounded. Do you think it had anything to do with Gibby mouthing off a little lately and then having to apologize? Heather Neuert wasn't really much of an "addition" to the show JMHO but why would any network keep Julie Banderas and Ainsley Airhead (other than the possible appeal to a young male audience) and get rid John Gibson?

Gibby's apology was for something he said on the radio. I agree the addition of Heather to The Big Story was confusing.

I think FNCFan20 and Jill are on the right track, but what's the bottom line? If there's more here than meets the eye, why wouldn't they just announce it? By the same token, like Sherlock Holmes and the clue of the dog that didn't bark, there are several things pointedly NOT said during this segment that I thought significant.

I think you are going to see some current "contributors" to FoxNews get a shot at their own show either nightly or in a weekend slot.

Johnny: When Gibson and Nauert did not return on Wednesday after Super Tuesday II, I wondered whether they were gone.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, I think this may be part of a larger shift to move Hemmer and Kelly into an early prime spot and perhaps also replace Cavuto at 4pm ET.

Getting rid of all the old stiffs on Fox, aye? If it gets Julie B more face time, I'm in.

I didn't catch what you were hinting at in the vid Johnny D. In my defense, I was utterly distracted by the little white lines that kept sweeping across the top of the ticker-thing (dono what they call that).

Is it just me, or does the blue bit at the bottom (again, what is that called?) take up more and more of the screen and have more flashy bits with every day that passes?

I'd guess Election Headquarters will continue through the November elections. Looking at old ratings (at TVNewser), ratings for EHQ jumped considerably from the Big Story. Fox will stick with a winner.

After November? Something else, but not John Gibson.

Shakesy, I agree with you. I'll support anything that gets Julie more airtime.

The thing at the bottom of the screen is called the "lower third". They've improved on it a lot. During the primaries in Kansas and Louisiana it took up over half the screen!

It's called a chyron, and they do enjoy shaking it up once in a while. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_third

I like the little game you turned this into johnny!

FNCFan20, you beat me to it! It's called a lower third, chyron, or a superbar in the US.

OK, I'm going to lay out all the things that bothered me about this clip. You tell me what you think it means:

Gibson is introduced as a radio show host.
No mention that he has a tv show (Big Story).
No comment about them "borrowing" his time slot (as there was on an earlier occasion).
They plug the radio show, but not The Big Story.
No mention that The Big Story returns on Monday.

I know what that all suggests to me. But maybe I'm nuts. What do you all think?

Someone here said this is a way to groom Bill and Megyn, an immensely popular duo on FNC, for an early prime or primetime slot. What would happen to their morning slot were this to happen? And why mess with what's succeeding in the morning slot?

Johhny: In of your clips of Gibson's radio show, there's a portion of the end where some caller calls to mock him and the fact that his show is probably ending.

Gibson says no, his ratings are the best, but even so, he says he's getting old and he's done his share for god and king (in so many words)

I think its one of those clips where they read the fanatical left wing comments from blogs

Yes, I think I remember that. But I'm not sure I can recall which clip that was from. Still, that's an excellent point. Though I wonder if leaving tv would really be his choice, as I think he'd prefer to do so on his own terms.

I did take a look at the ratings, the new show finished in third place on Thursday and only one marginally once this week. I don't look all the time but didn't Big Story routinely get around 250-300K in the demo when Gibson was alone a year ago? I think it did.

Well I believe Thursday and Friday neither Hemmer nor Kelly were on the show; both anchors were substitutes. So that might have affected the numbers. Still, if Hemmer couldn't be there why not let Gibson do it?

It does seem...at least with the F&FWE...that there has been a shuffling around and testing people in new slots....Not sure if its with an eye to actually move people or just to accomdate this strange election season....

JMO anyway...

Hey they got rid of Eric Burns...F&FWE is changing, as well. Wouldn't surprise me if they're making other changes, including replacing the Big Story.

Note to FNC...change is NOT always good.

He may have went out on his own term's. On TOP of the ratings for his slot. Hard to believe any better way to go out.

Good point, and indisputably true. Anything else there will have to match that record.
