Fox Haters Week in Review

Keith Olbermann lies about Jesse Watters and covers up for Janeane Garofalo. We expose that and more in the latest Fox Haters Week in Review.

Fact-Check Follies
When Shepard Smith spoke out about torture, it generated hundreds of stories. And many of them revealed just how little the authors know about FNC. News Corpse, which fancies itself a watchdog of FNC, writes:

Shepard Smith is the Fox anchor most hated by entrenched Fox viewers.
Um, source? No? OK.
Smith takes a principled stand against torture and in favor of living up to our national values...This is video from Fox’s Strategy Room, which is a webcast that takes place when the network goes to commercial. So this was never on the air.
Well at least they got the venue correct: it was a webcast. But where did they get the idea that it's only on during commercials? They made it up! The Strategy Room runs from early morning throughout the afternoon, continuously, without breaks. Why doesn't someone who claims to give you the real truth about Fox know that?

And the claim that "this was never on the air"? That particular exchange wasn't of course. But this one was. And this one. Shep's stand on torture was on the air, repeatedly, but the honest brokers at News Corpse preferred to allow their readers to think it wasn't.

Meanwhile, Gawker uses the Strategy Room clip to claim that Shep "lost it on-air tonight", while The Daily Beast kicks the misinformation up another notch:
Someone was clearly asleep at the switchboard, because Shepard’s expletive-laden rant about the CIA torture memos slipped through and aired live on April 22, 2009. How much are FCC fines these days, anyway?
As we know, it didn't "air" at all; the expletives were heard on a webcast. And even if it had aired, what does the FCC have to do with it anyhow? Don't they realize that the FCC has no jurisdiction over the content of cable programming? (Perhaps someone can explain that to WorldNetDaily as well.) Note that the Daily Beast's comment was part of their special collection of Shep Smith clips...fully half of which are our own J$P videos. It would've been nice to have gotten a credit, but it's more troublesome that instead of an acknowledgment, Daily Beast edited the clips, removing our identifying logos! Very classy.

Saying It Makes It So
Another News Corpse entry caught our eye. This is a prime example of the "I said it, that makes it true" school of reportage:
James Osborne of Fox News has written an article that takes the administration and the Congress to task for stepping on the privacy rights of citizens. They never seemed to be too interested in the Bush administration’s incursions into privacy...It would also be nice if they could demonstrate some consistency by exhibiting a little concern for privacy violations incurred by the previous administration.
Where did the Corpsicles get the idea that "Fox" was "never too interested" in privacy issues? After all, if they could cite that entry on foxnews.com, then what was preventing them from citing this, or this, or this, or this? It would be nice if News Corpse could demonstrate some honesty by exhibiting a little concern for telling the truth.

Muddying the Watters
Someday we will look back at the coverage of O'Reilly producer Jesse Watters at a GE stockholder meeting as an archetype for spin and distortion. The Hollywood Reporter published one of the earliest reports, and even they saw fit to use some tendentious wording:
a Fox producer infiltrated the GE shareholders meeting.
The common meaning of "infiltrate" is "to pass (troops, for example) surreptitiously into enemy-held territory". But some Fox haters decided even "infiltrate" wasn't loaded enough for them. One site repeated it, then added that Watters "snuck into the GE shareholders meeting". Those scrupulous truth-tellers at the newshounds called Watters's question an "ambush". And our pals the Corpsicles declaimed: "Watters crashes GE shareholders meeting". In this sense, "crash" means:
to gain admittance to, even though uninvited: to crash a party.
to enter without a ticket, permission, etc.: to crash the gate at a football game.
Clearly a lie. (Just as when they asserted elsewhere that Watters "interrupted" the meeting: i.e. he asked a question in the Q&A portion.)

What do all the above Fox-hater diatribes have in common? Every one of them neglects to mention this salient fact:
A GE spokesman said the company traditionally doesn't broadcast the entire meeting. He also defended the right of Watters, a shareholder, to ask questions of GE brass.
So Mr Watters is a GE shareholder and is entitled by law to attend the meeting and ask questions. Why do you suppose these "reports" left that out? Perhaps because it exposes terms like "snuck in" and "crash" as rhetorical lies? Gawker goes a step further, stating Jesse was there "under the pretense that he owned shares". Pretense?
1. pretending or feigning; make-believe: My sleepiness was all pretense.
2. a false show of something: a pretense of friendship.
3. a piece of make-believe
Gawker also claims:
During a question-and-answer session, he asked GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt about MSNBC's political leanings...
In fact, Watters asked about "hate speech" (the Garofalo interview). He said nothing, and asked nothing, about MSNBC's political leanings.

But leave it to Keith Olbermann to concoct the ultimate in spin--not only does he lie about Watters, but he also mounts a transparent attempt to do damage control for Janeane Garofalo:
OLBERMANN: (Watters) and at least one other person affiliated with Fox proceeded to exercise their rights to ask.
Is this like the person "affiliated with Fox" who--according to Keith--created a fake Twitter account with his name? Only he didn't? And Olby was forced to take it back? Of course, this new allegation turns out to be false too. Olbermann continues:
OLBERMANN: Little Jesse‘s question was about Jeanine Garofalo‘s visit here last week, when she suggested the TP crowd was made up largely of racists.
Patently untrue:
GAROFALO: This is about hating a black man in the White House.  This is racism straight up.  That is nothing but a bunch of tea bagging rednecks.  And there is no way around that.... Again, this is about racism.  It could be any issue, any port in a storm. These guys hate that a black guy is in the White House, but they—they immigrant bash.... But what is really—I didn‘t know there were so many racists left. I didn‘t know that. As I said, the Republican hype in the conservative movement has now crystallized into the white power movement.
OLBERMANN:  Is that not a bad long-term strategy.  Even though—your point is terrifying there are that many racists left.
GAROFALO:  Right.
OLBERMANN:  The flip side of it is there aren‘t that many racists left.
GAROFALO:  You‘re the minority, literally tens of people showed up to this thing across the country.
Garofalo didn't "suggest" anything. She stated it as fact. Repeatedly. And she didn't use any qualifiers like "largely", or "some", or even "mostly". She said the tea party protesters were racists. All of them. Period. Can't Olbermann even tell the truth about his own interviews? But he has more to say:
OLBERMANN:  Little Jesse never identified himself as a Fox News employee when he asked his question.
Why should he? Did all the other shareholders give their occupations? No? Might that be because no such requirement exists?
OLBERMANN:  He also claimed his microphone had been cut off.  It was not.
That's rich coming from someone who wasn't at the session. Someone who was says otherwise.
OLBERMANN:  Every GE share owner who wanted to talk got to, some multiple times.
Not according to Larry Cjazkowski. And unlike Olby, Mr Cjazkowski was at the meeting.
OLBERMANN:  Also, Little Jesse recorded the question and answer session, in violation of corporation rules.
What, no source? Leaving aside the point that the rules appear to apply to video taping, the more inconvenient fact is that "little Jesse" did not record the meeting. Tom Borelli recorded it. Where did Keith get the idea that Watters did? He made it up!
OLBERMANN:  And when caught recording it, (Watters) lied about whether or not he was recording it.
Well since he didn't record it, he couldn't have been "caught" recording it. Another made-up Olbermann "fact". Ergo, Watters didn't lie about it either. Looks like that makes you the liar, Keith!

I have to wonder. Is Olbermann even capable of telling the truth? And does he know that everything that he says is a lie, or is he really that mentally imbalanced?

No. I didn't say KO lied about the mic being cut off. I quoted people who were there whose reports contradict Olbermann's statements. I didn't say who was right and who was wrong. I pointed out that people who were there had a different story from Olbermann.

That's separate from Olbermann making up stuff about Jesse Waters being caught recording etc, which, since he made it up, are pretty clearly lies.

"maybe i shouldnt have used the term lie in referring to u"

Well, actually you said more than merely citing another source, Chris, as your edit at NH attests.

Why would it take more than one shareholder to prove that a GE spokesperson may have been mistaken, speaking too soon, or spinning*? One shareholder as a source should have been enough to have caused Olbermann to issue a caveat, instead of offering up the word of a paid agent as gospel.

*(I don't think "lie" or "lying" is necessarily an accurate term in these sorts of disputes, and judging by your edit, you should be less quick to use it.)

We weren't arguing about whether or not Rivera is a "punk and a disgrace", we were arguing about your jumping to the conclusion that labeling him that is done solely because Rivera is liberal.

You quoted her line from this thread but say you were replying to the Geraldo thread?

Not to seem standoffish chris, but could you articulate Cecelia's opinion on either thread? It appears you didn't quite grasp what she was saying there either. Again, this is not an attack, it is an invitation.

well both of you called rivera a punk and disgrace and i thought that the reason was a liberal-then: The part of your argument I addressed was the notion that anyone calling Geraldo those names did so out of partisanship.
Cecelia

what did you mean by partisanship?? liberal/conservative??

I understand what you're saying, and I know that I don't have a dog in this fight. It was one of the Hotair commenters that originally said it.

I was asking if you could describe in detail Cecelia's opinion on the matter, be it shareholders or Geraldo.

Chris, I have no concern whatsoever that you don't agree with the assessment of Geraldo.

You are right-- the assessment is an opinion.

However, when someone issued THEIR opinion on Geraldo, you attributed partisan motives to them.

You said, that they assessed Geraldo that way out of their own partisanship-- in other words that they dislike Geraldo because he is a liberal on FNC and that they are conservative.

When confronted with reasons to think Geraldo is a punk and a disgrace that have NOTHING to do with him being a liberal, you admitted that you weren't aware of those things.

You owe us an apology not because you don't agree with our assessment of Geraldo, but for jumping to conclusions about our motives for labeling him those things-- for accusing us of calling Geraldo a "punk and a disgrace" merely because Geraldo is liberal, when there are plenty of other reasons to dislike him.

You still owe us one.
