The NYT piece was okay...until it took a potshot at FNC. "Over on Fox News, pretty much the polar opposite on the political spectrum, ..." If center right and far-left are polar opposites, than Eric Wilson, the writer for the piece, is correct. But this is the NYT we're talking about. So, I'd guess he meant FNC is far-right.
I just added a Gravitar. So, now, you can see my picture in the upper right portion of my comments.

Williams' and Olbermann's ties look lilac from the pictures in the NYT piece. Kelly Wright's tie is true purple.
The trend looks terrific across the lilac-purple spectrum. It would be too easter eggish for spring, but looks so fresh for late summer.

Regarding the KOS commenter, Strozek", asking for a boycott of MSNBC
"I discussed how MSNBC frequently operates as a GOP mouthpiece"
I nominate Strozek as TPMOOTWR
(Todays Person Most out of touch with Reality).
How they "Frequently" operate as a GOP mouthpiece? Yikes!
July 31, 2008, 10:21:24 AM EDT – Like – Reply

I do think Strozek overstated the case, Ashley, but a number of MSNBC people do seem to believe they are being filtered when it comes to McCain. That may have been part of the reason for Andrea Mitchell's download earlier in the week.
In 2000, we had the media enamored of McCain, in part because of a general and persistent disdain of Bush, with some exceptions, and in (much larger) part because McCain was interesting and newsworthy. Receptive. As a consequence, we didn't get the highest quality coverage.
In 2008, I do think, as you may be suggesting, the media is enamored of Obama. McCain seems to be considered a cranky, dottering old coot to much of the media, and Obama seems to be fresh, interesting and newsworthy.
However, there is one other factor as well. Obama is the first charismatic candidate we have had in some time. I started out the year as a Hillary Democrat. She, or more accurately her campaign, alienated me. But, on a more positive side, Obama engaged me. I have only seen him in person twice, once a small, professional setting and once a large rally. He takes the breath from you. It is amazing, and I tried to resist.
Of course, the danger with a truly charistmatic candidate is that he or she provokes strong responses, both positive and negative.
I think the combination of Obama's newsworthiness and his charisma has won the media over, and I believe Mitchell returned from the Middle East/Europe trip mesmerized. I can share her sentiment, but it makes the coverage questionable.
So, you do have a valid point.
Speaking only in terms of the media, and not voters, McCain is going to have a tough task now. His sausage and cheese speeches, his joy rides with even older and tireder Republican brands, are not likely to capture media interest, and attacks on Obama are likely going to be met with a "nasty" label.
But, there is even a greater threat to media personalities. Too visibly close an association with McCain may make them seem a bit tired and stale. To some extent, this may be what I am seeing as a tiredness and staleness with FNC right now, and to which you most likely and appropirtaely take exception.
Again, I think what I am seeing setting up now, if I am correct, is not a positive development in terms of the media. I can say that as the most avid of Obama supporters and a beneficiary of the media swoon.

I disagree with part 1, part 2 is correct though. They felt him interesting and newsworth because he sucked up to the media and spoke ill of fellow repubs.

Give it a rest, OS. O'Reilly has no credibility, in my opinion. Credibility is a matter for the fact finder. I base my facts on his demeanor, his tendency towards gross over-statement, his bullying style, and cheesy stalker, and his clown-like analytical approaches (including the body language expert). McClellan's statement was merely icing on the rather mundane cake. If you disagree with me, fine. I frankly could care less.
More importantly, Ashley, there is truth in what you say, although the John McCain of 2000 spoke ill of a number of people, not just Republicans. The McCain of 2008 speaks ill of everyone, it would seem, except McBush and McLieberman.

Re: Donny Deutsch. Sometimes he does have a good program, but he's a difficult host to watch. He is arrogant, and apparently just an heir to his dad's advertising empire. Yet that is hardly ever mentioned.
Some of the guests he has on are interesting, with the ideas they come up with and the products they invent. But again, Deutsch himself is just so arrogant! And I know this is minor, but the fact that he doesn't wear a tie (like everyone else on TV) just makes him seem as if he doesn't have to, because he's Donny Deutsch!

Every campaign year the mainstream media prefers the Democrat over the Republican. This was even true when Reagan campaigned against Carter and then Mondale. Reagan was one of the most charismatic presidential nominees of our time. I haeard him speak in person and I was blown away. Reagan's charisma did him little good with the mainstream press, who was ideologically driven and not charismatically driven.
I notice that you have continued to foster your "big lie" propaganda technique. Yesterday, I took your definition of "bully" and demonstrated how BOR does not fit YOUR DEFINITION while Matthews and Olbermann do. You made no counteragument.
But today you revert back to your Stalinist tactic (Stalin and Hitler are moral images according to your book) of repeating BOR is a bully; BOR is a bully . . even though your argument was thoroughly refuted and you have no facts or logic to back up anything you say. That's why I do not find your opinions to be credible. That's why I do not find your opinions to be worth spit.
Conversely, I find BOR to be much more credible than you are. Generally, he does use facts and reason to support whatever he says.
If you come at O'Reilly with facts and reason, he will debate you. When you refute him he doesn't petulatly retreat into some la la land of subjectivity; that is, he doesn't say "I have my feelings on this matter and you have yours, and my feelings are just as good as yours."
I have heard O'Reilly say on occasion the following: "I could be wrong." You make a good argument . . . I don't agree with it but you make a good argument."
If we analyze your other criticsms (apart from your totally discredited notion that BOR is a bully). . . based on our track record . . . I stongly suspect that we would find that those too are based on feelings and not on facts and logic.
As such, your opinions continue to be not worth spit. At any rate, you should take care of the log that is in your eye before you even think about trying to remove the spec in your borther's eye.
In other words, get some credibility yourself before you try to criticize someone else's lack of credibiity.
For all of your verbosity and pomposity, you aren't worth listening to until you do.

Cut the crap. I have told you specifically what you must do to satisfy me. And to make yourself credible.
Quit disrespecting me by ignoring my rebuttal to your arguments.
Quit mindlessly repeating the same thing over and over and over again with nothing to substantiate what you are saying
Quit obfuscating. Quit trying to baffle me with BS and bring up all kinds of extraneous nonsense that have nothing to do with we are discussing.
At least try to make sound arguments based on facts and logic. When you fall on your face and embarrass your self (like when you quote something that was not even said) just admit that your argument fell short and don't cling to your assertion until you come up with with a better argument.
Your feeble attempts at sarcasm and to blow smoke in my face just makes me further lose respect for your opinions n (really notions is a better word) . . . if that is possible.
BTW: O'Reilly does not expect everyone to agree with him. However, he does respect "stand up" people who make a good argument. I am the same way.l

I just noticed another lie on News Hounds. They have a topic about a guy on Fox last week or so who said that gas would be down to $2.50 a gallon by now. What they fail to mention is that Fox has had several guests speaking on this topic, and most of them have said that they expect only minor relief at the pumps in the near furure. Just another one of their lies by reporting "half-truths" I have been banned from their site for disagreeing with them, but I know that they come over here to read the TRUTH.

How is pointing out one guest who said "gas would be down to $2.50 a gallon by now" a lie? They don't mention the legitimate guests (that conflict with this guest's view?) but that is not a lie or spin. It is an inconvenient fact that a guest came on Fox News stating these things a few weeks ago, and that guest turned out to be very wrong.
July 31, 2008, 5:23:04 PM EDT – Like – Reply

On NH, Ellen opined that Powers dominated Rove in their discussion. I did not see that. I did notice that at one point Powers misquoted Rove. She said that Rove was arguing that Obama did not see the soldiers because Obama would not have a photo opportunity. Rove consistently said that Obama indicated that it was because he could not take his campaign adviser with him.
The interview ended with Powers denying that Obama said what Rove quoted him as saying.
They said something about running the tape after the break. Did they ever run the tape? Dollar, do you have the tape of Obama's saying that he would not go because he could not take his campaign adviser?
If Obama said what Rove quoted him as saying, then (contrary to what Ellen Brodsky says) I believe that Rove clearly won the exchange. And, Powers made a fool of herself.
If Obama did not say what Rove indicated, then I think that (after a rocky start) that Powers won the debate. And Rove ends up looking a bit foolish.
Don't keep us in suspense Dollar. Who won?
BTW: since Hannity mentioned Gallup numbers . . . as a point of interest . . . the most recent Gallup poll shows McCain leading by 4 points and today's Gallup tracking poll shows Obama leading by 1 percentage point.

I don't want to speak for Tony but I think that what tony is saying is this: NH indicated that Fox had only one guest to talk about future gas prices and that guest was overly optimistic. Perhaps NH was even saying that Fox deliberately was distorting things (through their choice of guests) to make the administration look good.
What NH failed to mention was that Fox had a number of experts who gave their prognostications about future gas prices. The guest that NH referenced was an outlier. The majority of guests were much more pessimistic about future gas prices.
Thus, Fox distorted nothing. Fox had a number of guests with varying opinions. Most of the opinions that were offered were essentially correct.
There was no distortion ergo NH (big surprise) lied once more about what Fox did.

From Rove's site (which Dollar referenced) we find this:
Mr. Obama also created a problem by canceling a visit to U.S. soldiers who were wounded in Iraq and are now recuperating at Landstuhl hospital in Germany. His campaign has offered a welter of explanations. What's the real one? My rule is that when in doubt, see what a candidate said at the time and judge his candor. In a July 26 London news conference, Mr. Obama explained: "I was going to be accompanied by one of my advisers, a former military officer. And we got notice that he would be treated as a campaign person, and it would therefore be perceived as political because he had endorsed my candidacy, but he wasn't on the Senate staff."
The solution was obvious. Leave the campaign adviser behind and visit the wounded troops. Mr. Obama's decision to work out in the hotel gym instead adds to his growing reputation for arrogance
Can it be proved defninitively that Obama said what Rove said he said on July 6. If he didn't (which I doubt) Rove has egg on his face.
If Obama spoke those words, then both Ellen and Powers have egg on their faces.
Wish somebody had a tape of that press conference.

Hey newshounds fans, john t has started an entire thread about how badly he was mistreated over here:
To say it's full of misinformation is putting it mildly. Even the title is false! jt, being the Einstein that he is, obviously has zero understanding of how Exile Island works, why people get sent there, or for how long. And there are people posting alleged 'facts' about me which are, in true newshound style, almost entirely wrong!
But there is some gold there among the dirt. Like Ellen first of all bragging (!) that she's complained to my ISP for posting a comment on her site. Oops, that's what's called an admission. Just the ticket for establishing tortious interference with my right to access the internet (she wants the ISP to close me down and close down this site). Then, as if it weren't enough to establish malice and intent right there, she tosses in another gem: she's following me around to any site where I post in order to post smears about my 'character'. Man, I'm telling you, I couldn't ask for more.
If you happened to watch The Closer this week, you saw a classic example of a wrongdoer who completely buried himself with his own words. Ellen Brodsky's postings (duly archived and forwarded on) should win her what we prosecutors used to call the Golden Shovel Award. Dig, dig, dig that hole. The fact that she admitted to cyber-stalking my every appearance on the internet is going to make discovery soooo much more fascinating.

NH seems decidedly off-topic, and I have to wonder how wise it is to give a site and the site owners/creators/operators/contributor, who are apparently so disrespected and despised by the three (3) of you so much attention and publicity. Of course, I don't understand that about the concept of an anti-Olbermann or anti-FNC site either, but whenever I raise that issue I am held to scorn and ridicule. Hey, it's 1 August, the start of an absurdly sweltering month. Too much perspiration for a group hug, but maybe we all ought to take a chill pill and sing "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore," or, even better, "Puff, the Magic Dragon." Mark's post is somewhat hypocritical considering the way that he gave publicity to OLBY WATCH site at OBLY's site . . . the bitter way that he complained about his treatment at OLBY WATCH . . . his calling some nice people Stalinists and stupid, name calling he has never retracted. Therefore those insults stand to this very day. BTW: one retracts a statement at the place where he/she made the statement is.
It is disingenuousness like this that makes me believe that Mark's comments/notions aren't worth much.
Speaking of bad treatment, it is very instructive (and hilarious) to read Captain America's signature (you find the sig in the link to the O/T forum that Dollar provided) and his comments about his sig.
When another poster said that Captain America's signature was offensive, he said that those were insults that were directed towards him and the complaining poster did not express outrage when the comments were made. She had no right to complain now. And make no mistake about it . . . the insulting comments are extreme (worse than Mark's even) and grossly outrageous. CA said he no longer posts on the main threads; partly because of the abuse he has received there.
People who complain about this site and about the OLBY WATCH site don't know how good they have had it here.

Under the circumstances, Mark, your encouragement really means a lot. Certainly has as much meaning as anything else you have said here.
Looks like John t's thread is backfiring in more ways than one. I think I am really beginning to like Captain America.
I hardly think that the posters at NH have any grounds for being upset at the c word when their fearless leader (Ellen Brodsky) has called a male (Dollar) the "p" word. Does she hate men? No . . . don't answer.
Once Ellen Brodsky wrote an article with the provocative title "Are we getting to Sean Hannity." This after she smeared him in every way possible and called him every name in the book, including racist and Nazi.
Dollar has called Ellen no names and has not been rude. He has not encouraged other people in cyber space to be as rude as possible to her (the same way she has encouraged others to be rude to him). He has only (courteously) expressed disagreement with some of her posts.
And, look at how she has become completely unglued. She is beside herself . . . even resorting to gross vulgarity to express her anger.
I think it might now be appropriate to ask, Are we getting to Ellen Brodsky?

Danny, picture Capon's condescending flowery prose used to describe Thanksgiving dinner at OS's house with his father's date being a GOAT who ate all the dinner and even the cans before the amorous proceedings started.
This went on, plus even more, day in and day out for many many months until Bob Cox had no choice but to shut down the site and reinvent it in its current form.
FF once asked if we, Cecelia, OS and me, could go on here and react to his current behavior. It should be completely understandable that we all answered with a resounding NO!
Sorry but I can't figure out how to register at haloscan. Help anyone?

Grammie, I think it's safe to go back to IE, at least from the reports I've read elsewhere.

It is a wonder that Dollar has been as patient with him as he has. Your examples are more evidence that Mark is just playing games . . . that he does not mean what he says; particularly when he is giving advice to Dollar.

you deserve the COTD Award for your insight!
Thanks Johnny, but Fire Fox is what I had before my new computer and is so much faster if you don't mind my signature in the body of my comment until I can get one of my boys here to help me that is what I'll do.

It's true, Danny.
You aren't only intelligent and insightful when it comes to issues and concepts, you're downright eerily perceptive about people.

Thanks Grammie and Cecelia. If I am perceptive about people, then it speaks well for both you and Grammie that I hold both of you in the highest esteem . . . and affection.

As an IT-savvy person, let me tell you that it's never safe to go back to IE. Opera and Firefox FTW!
Grammie and Cecelia, you may both resent the fact that I don't dislike Mark for his past transgressions, but I won't apologize for giving him the same benefit of the doubt as I give each of you. So far, he has insulted me less.

FF, "resent" you? "Insulted" you less? You sure?...
Well, aside for your being inexplicably defensive about compliments towards a guy you probably admire as well, who resents who here?

olby sucks
FF, what you've seen of "mark" is only the tip the iceberg, literally. For that, I won't apologise.

Olby sucks, you certainly don't need to apologize to FF.
FF is right, Mark never insulted him as he has us. That what Mark did has mattered to Danny beyond what Mark has said to Danny, himself, is something you, Grammie, Sharon, and I can't help but be grateful to him over. Whether FF is comfortable with that or not is of no concern to me.

Huh? FF, Mark didn't insult YOU, so you're fine with him. Danny championed US against someone who did, so we're grateful to him.
You of all people should understand the dynamics of that and should understand why we wouldn't be concerned about how anyone felt about our gratitude to him.

FF, in reference to you, I made nothing more than a statement of fact re your question to us and that it is understandable that we responded to your question with a resounding NO! I did have a disagreement with you some weeks back re Capon and after discussing it back and forth I thought we had "agreed to disagree". Please don't take anything more from what I said tonight regarding you other than a recital of the facts.
As for Danny I am impressed that he has demonstrated great insight to what is roiling below the surface with Capon that we at OW were subjected to without his having actually witnessed it. As I said, Danny has great insight.
Johnny, I also understand your position perfectly well. You have an "official" position here, you are a guy, you were subjected to very little of Capon's venom and you did not read all the comments to be aware of just how pervasive and low life repulsive he was. Having been acquainted with you for quite a while now I can't even imagine you being anything other than an honest broker and ab all around good guy.
Not even my dear husband and I agreed on absolutely everything so I certainly don't expect it from anyone else.

Sorry, the above was by me, Grammie.
I also just noticed how to comment as Grammie, I think.
