On the Mark
I found myself stuck in a hotel in a most unpleasant city, and I watched (most of) O'Reilly last night for the first time in a long while. I know O'Reilly is not the focus of as much attention here as he is elsewhere. And, I do have to admit that I hold O'Reilly and his show in low regard, very low regard. Nonetheless, I was struck by the very poor quality of the show last night. Perhaps, the show was just an aberration, but it seemed to me that it
is on a precipitous slide into fluff and sleaze. I watched the Gingrich segment, the latest trash Rev. Wright segment and the Culture Quiz. There was some other segment that never caught my attention adequately to even headline it. I am always amazed to have a team like O'Reilly and Gingrich (or O'Reilly and Morris) pontificating about moral values. The irony is laughable.

Rev. Wright .... So what? I suppose this must pander to a hard core audience, and, if so, all good and well, but I can't imagine why I should be concerned about man who led a large church for a long time living well. Should he be consigned to a double wide in Kiowa, Oklahoma? Becoming a Wal-Mart greeter to support himself in his golden years? I just don't get it.

The worst was the Culture Quiz. We can talk endlessly about the mindless drivel on Olbermann, and there is much of that, but this was nothing but intellectual styrofoam packing peanuts.

What a worthless broadcast! What a waste of half an hour for me!

I look forward to Luntz tonight. I have some problems with his methodology, but I always glimmer someting.

Mark: Tonight E.D. Hill is subbing for O'Reilly.

You imply being forced to watch O'Reilly, ostensively because the hotel TV didn't include CNN or MSNBC. In my travels, I have never stayed in a hotel/motel that offered Fox and not the others; usually the pecking order is first CNN, then MSNBC and maybe FNC.

I don't think I implied anything of the sort. Indeed, the hotel had CNN and MSNBC. Because I was in a city I find disagreeable, I did not elect to go out. I was in a hotel room, I had caught up on my work, I had finished my book. I was in a hotel room and bored, so I seized an opportunity to watch a program I don't normally watch. When I am in the office or at home, I have to be prudent in my use of time.

By the way, the pecking order in this hotel is CNN-FNC-MSNBC. I found that a bit unusual, since the pattern you described is more frequent. I am deep in heart of the reddest of the red, the looniest of the looney, however. I am surprised FNC wasn't first. That, by the way, was a joke.

Of course TVNewser gives Olby credence in what Johnny said last night in the comments for yesterday's thread is another Olbermann lie.

Of course you don't get it. Allow me to assist. I am sure you heard the "good reverends" sermon ridiculing "rich white men," right? Do you not see the hypocrisy of the "good reverend" moving into a 10,000 square foot house in all white upper class neigborhood?

Let's see .... We have the late Falwell, Robertson, (Richard) Roberts, right-wingers one and all, ministers, extravagant lifestyles, Robert's wife even raiding the coffers, and I can't think of anyone in Alice or in Wonderland harping on it for weeks on end, while Wright is daily fodder on FNC.

So wait, On the Mark, if what Wright did is no big deal then why are you making meaningless comparsions to other people?

What he did is either right or wrong.

But I guess the corrupt Left is above all that.

Jack Welch was just on "Your World" putting a positive spin on the state of GE. What do you think the odds are that Keith uses that to feed his Olbsession with BOR either tonight or tomorrow?

That wouldn't surprise me Mike, but I was surprised at Welch's "review" of his successor at GE.

OTM, you appear to want to make sure that everyone here knows that you only watch Fox/BOR in very unusual circumstances. You seem to be saying that under ordinary circumstances you are way above the hoi poloi and would never stoop to watch Fox News except in unusual and dire circumstances.

Might I suggest that if you want others to judge your comments strictly on the content and merit you might go directly to the point you want to make. I suggest that you should skip all the tedious details [in short, who cares besides you] of your life as justifications implying that you are one of the elite talking down to we "small town" folk clinging to our superstitions.

I'd like to submit a new nickname for KO: Keith "Broken Record" Olbermann. Why? Every "Countdown" is virtually the same. Also, Keith "Groundhog Day" Olbermann.
I was on Wikipedia tonight and looked up Keith. Then, I went to the Factor Archives at BillOReilly.com. Apparently, BOR has never referred to Keith or "Countdown" by name, other than botching his last name while quoting a "San Antonio Express-News" op-ed from Col. Ken Allard (ret.) last February ('07). Why else would J$ call him "Herr Olbermahn"?

Unlike some of the posters here (you excluded), I do not engage in personal attacks, and I try very hard to stay on point. I think I generally succeed. Those not so predisposed are better ignored. If we can keep this civil and targeted, honest and relevant, free of personal attack and innuendo, we are all served better. This is a premier blog, and I hope some do not succeed in destroying it.

A plug for Maddow and Buchanan tonight .... Their post-Debate analysis was excellent. A good, broad exchange of ideas, absent whining, shrillness and personal attack. I could only hope this becomes the norm on cable news election coverage. This from one not all that fond of either ....

I am so sorry, OTM. I obviously totally misunderstood both you and your comments. In my defense let me quote you:

" I think he's really hit a nerve, and hsi detractors are feeling some heat. Has anyone taken a look at Olbermann Watch lately? A complete purge. If you criticize FOX or agree with Olbermann, you're gone. Stalinistic group is Cox, Dollar and the infamous gang of four* over there.
On The Mark | 02.08.08 - 3:13 pm | # "

"I shouldn't be all that certain that anyone has learned anything about OTM by virtue of the 4:09 post except, perhaps, the reason a number of people left OW preemptively, long before the temporary shutdown, and the poster** in question is 20% of the reason........
On The Mark | 04.02.08 - 4:27 pm "

J$ asked you once and I have asked you twice which of the two opposed charges you made against us and others is the one you want to stand by. Was it the behavior that was so venomous that it drove many away [your claim here, especially re me] or was it the "Stalinistic purges" conducted by R Cox, Johnny Dollar and the infamous "gang of four" [your claim at a KO fan site].

Your refusal to answer must be the reason that I have so totally misjudged you. As you said here "This is a premier blog, and I hope some do not succeed in destroying it." I have no more a desire to destroy this site than you do.

I share your fear. Any blog could so easily degenerate into flame wars filled with accusations of racism, misogyny. stupidity and even bestiality. Before you leap to deny that anyone would use accusations of "bestiality" I have seen it become an every day problem on one of my favorite sites. Nothing is below some trolls.

*Cee, Sharon, Cecelia and Grammie according to a few of our most infamous trolls at OW. They sometimes included OS and called us "the gang of five."

Grammie,

We can draw comfort from the fact that this IS a premier blog and that OTM (whatevah...) IS unable to engage in the sort of behavior that was his habit at OW.

Frankly, until he came to OW I had never seen an adult man insult a mature woman as he insulted you. That won't stand here at this blog. Neither will his willy nilly shouts of "racist" at every opponent.

Here, his agent provocateur methods are confined to oblique insinuations that he can only hope will be some sort of thorn in someone's side.

That status and sideline that he has claimed is quite an indictment for a guy who writes about being so busy in his career and about what is and is not a "waste of time".

I suggest we sit back and enjoy the irony. I suggest we enjoy Johnny's premier and well-run blog and enjoy each other and the honest posters here.

The agent provocateurs can try to make their little pea shots for the home team. The importance and significance of that task suits the likes of Philby/OTM particularly well.
