'I Sincerely Regret It and Apologize'

J$P Video! Liz Trotta falls on her sword:

From America's Newsroom, May 26 2008

SteveMG
Good for her.

It was, as she acknowledged, a dumb joke - emphasis joke - and she shouldn't have made it, especially in these ugly times. All grown ups recognize that.

Should be the end of story but something tells me otherwise as the non-grownups will continue to cry about it.

Roight... Do tell, how many segments would Hannity be doing right now, and how much "outrage" would Fox "News" and conservative idiot AM hate-jock radio clowns be trying to muster if the shoe was on the other foot?

Clear example of "IOKIYAR":

IOKIYAR
It's OK If You're a Republican. Explanation for an action or statement by a Republican which, were the responsible person a Democrat, would be cause for a firestorm of outrage.

Yeah - let's "joke" about a black presidential candidate being assasinated, let the host laugh along. Hardy, har, har...

But, hey, she "apologized" - drop it already. (IOKIYAR) Now back to our "analysis" on Clinton's "Kennedy" gaffe (intent to keep a now "over with" verbal slip, clearly and for true taken out of context... in the news cycle for as long as we can) for which /she/ apologized...

Toyomi, sure Hannity would be covering it if a lib had said something derogatory about a conservative. But he'd be alone! The entire mainstream media typically ignores attacks on conservatives, as you well know.

And what's worse, your friends physically attack our speakers by THROWING things at them during speeches, or speaking over them or rioting. Speech is apparently free only when it's a liberal doing the talking, as far as you and your friends are concerned.

I'm glad she apologized, and it sounded sincere, but it is still disturbing to me that a joke like that would ever pop into someone's head.

Also, her apology seems to negate all of the defenders who claimed that she had nothing to apologize for. Apparently, she begs to differ.

It's okay if you're a progressive because we all know only the right has hate.

Trotta should have apologized, sincerely, deeply. She did. Decency demands we move in as much as our own human nature wants to exact a price. Still, we move on. In doing so, we need to lay down the principle: Jokes about assassinations have no place in journalism, even at FOX.

By the way, previous poster, what Ms. Trotter did can be considered a crime. She lacked intent to carry out, to be sure, and wuld never be convicted. The price that needs to b exacted is by the FOX in the henhouse.

I am sorry but you are very mistaken. Even if she had come out and said "I'd like to see Obama shot", like Randi Rhodes said about Bush, it still wouldn't be a crime. And of course what Trotta said was considerably less than that, especially when the surrounding context is observed.

Of course Ms. Trotter's unfortunate comments can be considered a crime. If there were a threat expressed, a fact issue, prosecution is possible. You know, Johnny, lawyers are a dime a dozen in the US. Typical right wing logic. We are good. We just make jokes. If you think they are insenstive or off color, you're being too sensitive. It's really your fault, not ours, and how dare you presume we might be doing something illegal. We are on the side of God Almighty!

Where did you get your law degree from, Jeff? Do you know the applicable law? If wishing the President dead were a crime, Randi Rhodes would be doing 6-12 in Leavenworth. Or maybe 5-10 in Woolworth. Whatever.

Well,if we judge Ms Trotta by her own standards "...TROTTA: Well, that's beside the point, whether she meant it or not--", "....And the whole question of the first black man becoming a candidate for Presidency of the United States has all kinds of overtones and all kinds of caveats that really have to be considered in this thing"

These are the words that Ms Trotta used to criticize Sen Clinton (J$ has a transcript below). If we apply her standards about Clinton's assasination gaffe to her own verbal tic, then we must consider the ramifications seriously.

Okay Vince and Mike. I'll try to not call you names so JD won't delete my post so here goes.

JD posted that "lies" were posted about Trotta blaming it all on editing and "context".

The fact that she APOLOGIZED for what she said blows your argument out of the water. Wouldn't you agree?

That's all. Very simple.

JD if you delete this polite post it will only prove to me that you can't handle the truth.

Well I don't agree. The article I posted cited numerous headlines (there are now hundreds) that claimed Trotta was calling for the killing of Obama. That she wanted him dead.

It was of course easy to make this claim since these sites used a clip that was barely over 20 seconds long and left out the fact that she was in midst of being highly critical of Hillary for bringing up the whole assassination thing. Instead it snipped out a sentence fragment where she garbled her words and did a poor job of recovery with a bad joke. This despite the fact that the entire segment is available to be embedded on any website by anyone who wanted to. And yet they went through the trouble of creating a clipped version that only ran about 20 seconds.

Did she make an inappropriate joke? She admits that she did. Did she call for Obama to be killed? Did she wish him dead? It is clear from the entire conversation that those headlines are lies.

That's all. Very simple.

Yes, the words did not come out well at one point. But the context makes it clear that she was not speaking for herself. She was rattling off a list of egregious tactics by Hillary Clinton, with the Obama assassination talk as the latest example. To spin this as TROTTA wanted to see Obama assassinated is just a flat out lie.

She has nothing to apologize for, and neither does Fox. That's not to say that one or both won't be browbeaten into doing so. It's just to say that on the merits, there is nothing to apologize for.

I wouldn't mind an explanation, though you admit that she obviously wasn't calling for his assassination. It isn't that difficult to figure out when ALL HER WORDS are included. How then to explain all the headlines claiming that she DID call for his assassination?

I HATE it when people lie about stuff like this!

I think this is emblematic of the sort of nonsense that is engaged in by both sides. Someone makes a comment that can be taken to mean such-and-such and the other side (usually fully aware that the person's intentions are not what's being ballyhooed) makes political fodder out of it. When called upon such an opportunistic and cynical ploy, their defense invariably is, "Well, they/she/he do it!".

Yeah, well, that they ARE the sort of the person who does this is why we think disdain them...is it not?...

Well, what Hannity or Olbermann would do aside..., which one of us can be the more reasonable and honest person by NOT engaging in this sort of gotcha! stuff?

Whether it's a canard about someone calling someone racist, sexist, a troop hater, whatevah... I hate that cheap, mean, dishonest, and disingenuous crap!

Now as to LIz Trotta and her "joke". It's obvious that she wasn't joking about her own feelings (though she apologizes for giving that "appearance") and she wasn't joking about Hillary's TRUE feelings. Rather Trotta was joking about what critics say Hillary meant when she mentioned RK's assassination.

She says "and now we have what some are reading is a suggestion [from Hillary] that someone knock off Osama."

Shawn then corrects her by saying "Obama" [rather than her misstatement about "Osama"]

Trotta replies, "Well, both if we ["we" as in the "somebody" she mentioned first, or "the people who aren't on Obama's bandwagon", or as in the "U.S. govt who still can't catch him", etc.] could."

Trotta could have been joking about how the same people who actually believe Hillary was making an appeal for assassination, are the same folks who harbor an eternal Oct. Surprise theory of the WH catching Obama before the election in order to help Republicans. It simply is not credible to believe this woman was signaling in any way her hope for Obama's demise. In contrast in Hillary's case, I have no doubt that HRC certainly made a misstep in her comment about assassination.

Though it pains and frustrates me that with African-American candidate Obama we are being extorted by his champions to enter into a new world in which all thoughts and criticisms have to be rigorously screened and censored against a ginned-up charge of "racial insensitivity", I have no problem with the acrimony HRC's comment engendered. Though it's cynical to the point sickness to think that she was calling on someone to kill Obama, it is plausible that she wanted to use this "fear" in the heart's of our "loyal opposition" for what we loathsome rightwingers are and are capable of doing, in order to keep Obama from the WH. The fear that this country isn't yet ready to tolerate a black president might be enough to persuade some of them to support her instead. Again, I'll grant THAT motive as a possibility.

I draw the line at assigning the desire for death to my political opponents. As I do at calling them all sorts of "isms", "ists", and "ers". That they are often, silly, irrational, and wrathful is condemnation enough. And no one need twist their words into a pretzel to prove THAT...
