In the urban vernacular, "boo" means "boyfriend" or "male significant other."
If Laura is really gone from radio, that's a shame. At least she has her Fox News analyst position to fall back on. Having said that, in reaction to what she said in the "On the Record" clip below, John McCain did not make me reach for the remote last night. I don't care if he stumbles at any point in his speeches. One thing is for sure, I couldn't watch one second of Obama's speech in St. Paul. It was like watching my favorite team lose a game on the road with the crowd erupting in cheers. I mean, there might as well have been pyrotechnics, sirens that go off for home runs, and victory music playing.
And to think, this thread will be hijacked before long.

It annoys me when my girlfriend calls me boo. She never does it in person, just text messages and emails. Why? Because it sounds stupid when spoken! I think Anderson knew what it meant, but didn't realize how colloquial and unprofessional it sounded coming out.

I saw Morning Joe, just a bit, yesterday and today, and he seems to be dealing well with his girl's loss. In fact, he was even a bit critical of her exit stage right technique.
It is amazing to me how these pundits and analysts keep their jobs and their self-respect after being so clearly wrong so much of the time. Scarborough's example above is rather clear. Barnes and Morris stumble a great deal. Kristol is the King of the Kloudy Ball, of course. There are many more.

Joe was pretty off, as was Olbermann, regarding HRC....too bad they are not paid for their accuracy.
The radical left's anger at HRC is percolating up through the media now. Olbermann's "shoehorn" comment, that was so nicely chastised by Tom Brokaw, was the sign of that attitude.
Now her supporters are mobilizing to make her VP....oh what a mess SNOBamessiah has on his hands.

Watching Mitt Romney right now on Morning Joe, and he's such a total tool. He thinks that people aren't going to link McCain with Bush--what a crock. He voted with Bush 95% of the time in 2007. He's the same guy only older and slightly less stupid.

I can't believe Laura was encouraging Huckabee. I dont know anyone who likes Huckabee. Huckabee is way too overtly religious and all the conservatives I know find that way too vulgar. Contrary to Leftist Popular Belief , conservatives do not want a "theocrarcy"
I do find it interesting that the Dems aren't screamin gabout theocracy seeing how Obama's powerbase is a church and his closest allies are all Pastors.
I do agree with her bringing up Romney. I like him.

NVH,
Your characterization of Bush is extremely unfair; because the war against Hussein was a war of necessity and not a war of choice. I can't argue that point here however.
I thought that Denis Miller had a good point in his appearance on O'Reilly. He said that ten years ago, most of the Democrats seemed to think that the Clintons (particularly Hillary Clinton) could do no wrong. Now we are being told by a sizable number of Dems (oarticularly the peaceniks) that the Clintons are racist, manipulative and generally bad people.
If the Dems could be so wrong about the Clinton (says Miller), what else could they be wrong about?
Like I say I think Miller made a good point and he is a good addition to the O'Reilly show. I liked him on SNL and he has not lost his touch.

How can Fox keep the tag of being "America's election HQ" lagging in 3rd place?
"CNN ruled cable news the historic night of the Montana and South Dakota primaries, which wrapped up the Democratic presidential nomination derby in favor of Sen. Barack Obama.
CNN clocked more than 3.5 million viewers in prime time. That's a 34 percent lead over MSNBC's more than 2.5 million viewers. It's also a 47 percent advantage over Fox News Channel's prime-time crowd of 2.4 million viewers.
Yes, it appears MSNBC edged out FNC in prime time Tuesday."

"Morning Joe" seems to be undergoing a change. Before Scarborough's long absence, he had gotten extremely ill-tempered and hot-headed. It's too early to tell, but he seems, the last couple of days, to have toned down a bit.
Brzezinski, one of the brightest and most articulate women on television, seems to have adopted this flirty, empty-headed blonde routine, a real self-degradation. That, too, has toned down a bit of late.
I surmise that we were dealing with an enormous ego and a bit of unhapiness on the part of "Morning Joe". He is not a great mind. In fact, he is barely adequate. Yet, he is personable, and he is able to handle his guests well. And, the show attracts some excellent guest commentators and guests.
This show could well survive past the campaign season if Scarborough's personality and Brzezinski's intellect are put to good use.

As for your comment about FNC's election coverage, HF. I do agree it is by far the worst in cable news. It is largely dull, flat and without any real insights. Some of the reporters are good, particularly Garrett, but Hume and the Panel seem to have no energy and all act like it is an imposition to be on the set. I find this surprising, but in the 2000-02-04-06 cycles, I went to FNC for some very good coverage. It has fallen considerably.

The President is always saying I want to be on [Gives Back], said the Brit. And, even the "Idol" post can be said to be on topic.
Media consolidation presents us with some real issues.
With the Murdoch grouping, we have bawdy news rags, the smuttiest broadcast network in the US and a cable news network that promotes the Republican platform of so-called "family values". I realize that no one, least of all Republicans, takes the famil value mantra seriously, but still, we have some real compromises here, some startling inconsistencies.
Then we MSNBC/NBC we have a troubling union, as well. The corporate web Murdoch has woven so well is less taunt at MSNBC/NBC and that makes the inconsistencies even more apparent.
The web is loosest at CNN, and that is why it is always the most comfortable cable news network for me. I have a far greater source of integrity.

From the "haters" link just added, the writer discusses several issues before getting around to the s0-called "superhighway" project that is a favorite fright wig of anti-NAFTA crusaders. He writes:
Its nuts, for sure, but this hasnt stopped Dobbs, Beck, and OReilly from flogging the issue relentlessly.
He then goes on to cite examples from Dobbs and Beck, but none from O'Reilly. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but when did O'Reilly ever talk about the NAFTA superhighway, other than to dismiss it as unimportant?
Is the claim that O'Reilly "flogged" it "relentlessly" true? Or another smear?

There's a major problem going on at the border. Beck has been trying to get CNN to allow him to show some of the photos of the exterme violence but so far CNN has refused to permit him to do so. Imagine the uproar if Fox was refusing to permit the exposure of something like this.
http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/10924/
It is absolutely staggering on what is happening on the border. 6,000 people have been killed on our border and yet this doesn't seem to resonate with anybody. It doesn't seem to be on any news channels, anything.
So how do you get the message out? Now, I was having a debate with Joe last night about these photos and this is the same debate that we've had on CNN. CNN says you cannot show these photos and the reason why, they say it's just too gruesome. It's too violent. I think that's what you need to see. I think you should -- I think you should be allowed to see these things. Because of that, nobody has any idea of what's going on on the border. I have photos of things that have happened within a few miles of the U.S. border and I don't mean like a big fence. I mean you can just walk across the border. So I've given up on showing on TV

I have emailed Eric Alterman, the writer of that article, to ask him if he has documentation for that O'Reilly statement, or if it is a mistake on his part, telling him I never heard O'Reilly even mention it, except once on the radio when he dismissed it as a phony issue.
I note that he uses a media matters report as his source material, and that report specifically does not claim that O'Reilly had anything to do with the superhighway flap. So I'm betting he doesn't have the goods on this one. We will see if he responds and corrects his article. If not, then I guess I'll do something more visible on it.

OTOH, my experience with Salon.com was the exact opposite. Even when they were presented with video proof that what they wrote was wrong, they never responded to my email, let alone make any correction.
We'll have to see which approach Alterman takes, or whether he falls somewhere in between.

The highway is much discussed in Texas, as you can imagine, and I have done considerable research and reading on it. Dobbs' analysis is far different than Beck's. Dobbs very much deals with trade and the impact the mythological highway will have on trade. Beck could not carry on an intelligent discussion of trade issues, and he tends to focus on vehicles laden with Mexicans and Central Americans seeing some town they think they might like, jumping off to claim the town as their home and setting about robbing, raping, looting and stealing before they settle down to a nice dinner of frijoles and tortillas. I do not recall having read or seen anything by O'Reilly specifically on this topic, but he is Beckesque in his low level of intelligence and his flaming tongue. I wouldn't expect much.
I view all three (3) as jingoistic and racist, but I don't think O'Reilly has extensively addressed the road subject. I will add that I don't know that any of these men are truly racist. They might just be pandering to racists for viewership. I'll let you decide whether that is a better or worse.
As an aside, there is not much on-the-ground evidence of the highway. We would already have evidence of local and state Republican office-holders amassing land along the corridor to sell to the government. While there are many of reports of such activities, they all involve the web of parallel toll roads Governor Perry is championing to divert automobile traffic from IH 35, a pre-exisitng roadway from the Mexican to the Canadian border. I think this would be a far more cogent topic for local, broadcast and cable news, but only local news seems to have picked it up.
I am not given to great concern over being a crime victim, and I am certainly less concerned about Mexican and Central American immigrant crime than I am corporate and organized crime. The only kudos I can give the reprehensible Dobbs is that he does at least cover corporate crime as well.

"Pander" is the easiest catch-all insult one can use when thinking about something is just too cumbersome. You can pick any issue and say "so-and-so is pandering", and never have to explain how you come to that conclusion.
In O'Reilly's case, that's an especially thin reed. Pandering is more credible when there's a specific target audience, but given O'Reilly's views on immigration (for guest workers, against illeals), vs his spectrum of opinions (eg slams Big Oil) it's hard to sustain the theory that there's a specific group he's "pandering" to.

Not surprisingly, Johnny and Mike, you have a much more exhalted view of O'Reilly than I. If we take the mano a mano with Geraldo, by example, there are several ways of looking at:
#1 A legitimate difference of opinion over the issue of crime committed by so-called ilegal aliens.
#2 Raging testosterone.
#3 Theatrics pandering for audience interest.
I suspect the two (2) of you would go with #1, perhaps joined by #2, because you have seen something of value with O'Reilly or with the subject matter that draws you in. I, by contrast, am sure it was #3 because I find little of value with O'Reilly, and he repulses me. I'm not sure any of the three (3) us would be necessarily correct, nor would any of us be incorrect.
I do find less merit in your "pandering" lexiconic lesson, Johnny. When dealing with celebrities, pandering is always a key consideration.

As I was listening to James, who's a funny guy in the non-reporting appearances I've seen of him, he almost convinced me to buy "The Strong Man" for my dad for Father's Day. But I decided that wasn't an appropriate Father's Day gift. So, instead, I went with Jim Nantz's new book: "Always By My Side: A Father's Grace and a Sports Journey Unlike Any Other."

What does "so-called illegal aliens" mean? When you enter a country by breaking that countrys laws that makes you illegal. Pandering is when you pretend the law doesn't exist to get votes from the people breaking the law. How is O'Reilly pandering? Geraldo is pandering. He cares nothing about the people who are working in sweatshops and sleeping by the dozens on the floors of empty houses. He cares nothing about the women who are rapped by coyotes on the boarder. Ignoring crime because it benefits the hunger for power of one party is pandering.

Hannity pushes the agenda of conservatism successfully using his free speech rights. You will have to wait till Obamanation is in office for free speech to disappear. Hannity does not lie or distort facts like Olbermann. Hannity provides a conservative point of view about the days news but he does not pretend to be a journalist. So..Be honest, do you really take Olbermann or Mathews seriously?

I find Sean irritating. His tones are anything but dulcet. (That means he doesn't have a great voice or delivery.) He rattles off a million points or quotes in his doctrinaire way. He uses that "You are a great American" line for anyone he agrees with. And so on.
Having said all that, I'll defend him against haters of him on the left, particularly the far-left.

Mike, robust debate is not pandering, as long as it is an honest debate. You are willing to give O'Reilly the benefit of the doubt, I am not.
I will say that the explosion seemed a bit spontaneous. That would tend to suggest it was an honest debate, even if it was tasteless.
The problem with your argument, The Factor, is that we do presume innocence in the US. At least we say we do. I have an Hispanic secretary, with striking Mestiso features. Her family has lived in Texas since well before Texas was a nation or state, since well before the US even existed. She is constantly harassed by law enforcement personnel. By contarst, if you put me in the Rheinlandt, I am indistiguishable from the locals. I never get stopped by law enforcement personnel. We're presuming guilt aren't we. I'm not prepared to do that, and I don't throw "illegal" or "guilty" around very easily. Arguably, there may be times when law enforcement needs to profile. I don't believe there are many such instances in this immigration matter, but I'll accept that premise for the same of argument. I ask you: Is there ever a need for a cable show host/anchor/commenter to racially or ethnically profile? What urgent need is served by that?

Unlike Olbermann, Hannity is truth in advertising as a partisan advocate.
So, I say more power to him in his annoying the left.
His ratings both on FOX and on the radio are consistant. This means he should be taken seriously because he has a big audience.
Style....he can grate on me. I don;t think he could be a Mensa member, but that's ok.
On his radio show, Hannity has guests like Senator Lieberman, Lanny Davis, Bob Beckel, even Senator Kennedy and even the honorable Reverand Wright!....Wow, people from the "other side" he can find common ground with and allow them to voice their side of the story....Contrast this with Mr. Olbermann, especially his FOX show which allows debate.

When has O'Reilly called for profiling of Hispanics? When O'Reilly talks of illegals, he is usually talking about illegals who have been previously been arrested and release without their residency status being determined or who have been deported previously. Why is it profiling for the police to request ID from someone who has been convicted of a crime? Never has O'Reilly suggested that the police go door to door in hispanic neigbor hoods requesting ID.

I do love the BBC, by the way. I would bore many Americans to death, but I like the depth, the way it doesn't assume all the viewers are moronic and xenophobic. I will US cable news would mimic it just a bit. The closest we've had in recent years is Aaron Brown, a name that conjures up fear and loathing by many FNC folks, perhaps because he doesn't wear squirt flowers or juggle possums while he is eating toothpaste sandwiches and brethlessly reporting on the breaking news about Lohan or Spears.

You know the guy that can barely bend over to water the flowers the hedge his window sil that his dead wife planted two years ago? That's Bill's audience. Not much influence. Olbermann is trending up in the money demo, O'Reilly is trending down, tess.
When this is brought up, FOX fans say that O'Reilly has more total viewers. Problem is, they have a limited role in the extended future of the country and little time to develop purchasing habits. Therefore, advertisers don't pay them much mind.
And if you hate my name (which is a knock-off on a rapper name) I'll have you know that I'd go by my first name but then olbysucks etc will accuse me of having a "sock puppet" and other crap.

Total viewers count, I guess, if you think that people that are 70 years old and are probably only going to be around for another 2 to 5 years.
They neither have long-term purchasing power nor long-term influence on the course of the nation. You know the guy that can barely bend over to water the flowers the hedge his window sil that his dead wife planted two years ago? That's Bill's audience. Not much influence. That's why the only people that quote total viewers are Bill O'Reilly fans. It's the only way to make him appear relevent.

Well, not to change the subject... but I'm very glad over how well Laura looks.
I know with her past problems, her hiatus from her radio program seemed ominous.
Well, it's such a relief to see her looking so very well. Her tan is attractive (always a point of wistful refection among the snow whites of the world).
I enjoyed the banter between Laura and Greta. I know FNC gets some teasing about the amount of lipstick used by the female talent and that's fair because there is certainly an emphasis on wearing clothing a size smaller than you fit there too. However, since I've pulled up a stool here at JD's and have been watching FNC more than MSNBC now, it's obvious to me that fox females have a stronger presence than women on other channels. They have a stronger on-air voice and seem to operate as co-equals with male staffers there in a way I only saw on Morning Joe at MSNBC.
I don't know about CNN, I never watch it.

While I do tend to think Senator Obama is the media darling, I think it has very little to do with political leanings or philosophy, but everything to do with the fact that he is charismatic, with an engaging, unique history. Who was the media darling in 2000? Not Gore. Not Bush. McCain. Why? Before he morphed into George S. McBush, he was a maverick, an engaging figure. Now, McCain is as boring has whote bread toast with generic jam. And, Hillary? Old news. In essence, Senator Obama makes the media's job easy and media types have a propensity to a bit of laziness, as we all do.

Actually, New Labor is still in power, and Gordon Brown is to the left of George W. Bush's poodle, Tony Blair. The mayor of London is now a Tory, but if you think that is anything like being a conservative Republican, you don't follow the news well. I imagine you have a channel available for BBC News and possibly the BBC World Report. Perhaps, CNN will revivie its CNN World (via CNN International) after the election. This might all then become clearer.

Labor did suffer a major parliamentary defeat from which some said that they cannot recover. But you are right, I jumped the gun, they have not been thrown out of power yet.
Parties are not the same from one country to another. New Labour is not the same as Democrats, though Biden plagiarized a Labor leaders speech) and the Republicans are not equal to the Torys despite Reagan and Thatcher's close relationship. France did throw out the liberals in their government but their parties are not exactly like ours (or England's) either.
I do think that Brit libs would be better served trying to preserve their situation in England; rather, than worrying about American Politics. Like the old song says, If you mind your own business; you won't be minding mine.

Regan had an incredible amount of charisma, but he was never the drive by media darling. I doubt that if J.C. Watts had been selected as the republican candidate . . . that he would have been the media darling despite the fact that he has charisma and his nomination would have been historic.
The Clintons were media darlings until a more liberal guy came along and now both Clintons have been abandoned. McCain's personality has not changed. As long as he was the most liberal Republican, he was a media darling. But now he is competing with a more liberal candidate, so the drive by media have abandoned him, just like they did the Clintons
No, being the darling of the media has more to do with political philosophy than anything else.

I think the profound lack of understanding of what is happening in the UK, as exhibited by the foregoing comments, makes my point that news, including cable news, does a horrible job of covering anything international, particularly anything international that lacks direct and immediate consequences upon America. And, when I reflect that we know virtually nothing about our same language, closest ally, I surely realize we know far less about continental Europe, much less South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Rim. Perhaps, after the election coverage is concluded, some brave programmer will begin to include international news and deliver us from our woeful ignorance. It could do nothing but improve us.

I don't have cable either. I depend on the internet, which is a fairly good source of news. That's why my understanding of what is happening in international politics, as my posts have demonstrated, is not that bad.
I do bemoan some recent posts from people who have cable, which show a woeful lack of understanding of U.S. politics. Obviously cable news must not be doing a good job of educating Americans about politics here at home. This is a grievous problem and U.S. cable should rectify it. U.S. cable companies should intensify their efforts to help peopleAmericans better understand domestic politics before the industry does anything else.

I get very little of my news about Europe from cable. Vince is correct about the Brits succumbing to the leftist political correctness that allows Muslims to take over while silencing the majority.
I get almost all of my news about it from international news sites. Britain is going the way of France in terms of their "takeover".

So, I am en route this weekend to Essex for a conference on airport security .... This will be my third hop to the UK this year (along with some trips to France, Germany and elsewhere). So far, no one has made be eat or bathe with a falafel. Should I expect this now?
This is rather rich. Vince and Danny commenting about cable news on a cable news site, and they don't have cable. From the text of some of the posts, it appears that other posters don't have cable or never watch the news. Does this strike anyone as odd? How do we stay on topic.
Having said that, some of the people who have indicated that they don't have cable are more on-topic, cogent and literate than the ramblers who flirt, chat mindlessly exchanging self-designated bonmots, etc. I don't agree with much you have to say, Vince and Danny, but you make me think. Same for FoxFan. Glad you guys are around.

Who would have ever thought that the defining issue in this campaign would be arugula? I'm rather sure McCain is much more an arugula kind of guy than collard greens, although I suppose he prefers a chunk of iceberg with a generous portion of Ranch dressing covered in croutons. Maybe, we need a food editor for CNN, FNC and MSNBC so we can all figure out how to vote.
