This isn't about cable news, but it is reciting by a newsman.

It's delightful and so true!

Re: "O'Reilly: MSNBC 'hacks'": Of course, Bill just had to say this while the No Spin News is open to everyone.  The far-left blogs will undoubtedly pick up on this, which means Keith Olbermann will name Bill Worst Person on Monday night.  The Ted Baxter voice and invective may not have been in effect last night, but they will on Monday.

Frankly, I doubt there's anyone in the country who has watched the Haiti disaster and hasn't, at the very least, teared-up a little.

However, this thing with news people crying on camera has gotten a bit out of hand.  It's almost gotten to be an expected way of proving their humanitarian bonafides.

I know Cronkite choked up when announcing Pres. Kennedy's death, but what made his lapse so significant (and emphatic of the personal nature of the loss, as well as the national one) was Cronkite's usual iron-clad gravitas.

I know it's a monumentally frightful and grim thing that these reporters are witnessing, but suck it up, people.  Quit making every damn thing in the world about YOU.

speaking of john t-he took a comment you made a few years ago and thought it was a newer one which he posted at the other "blog". the comment I'm talking about is this: "WHAT are these comments threads coming to? I take a few weeks off to deal with a move, and we get nonsense like the above"

Now I saw that comment and looked at the date, it was a comment that was made a few years back. stupid john t thinks its new.

It's hard to resist this. I just got sent this, checked it out, and yes it's real. Mind-boggling, but real. From john "Einstein" t:

Hey little Chrissy you dumbass, Dollar made that comment this week. If you want to talk about going back in years to find comments, talk to your Lord and Master Dollar. In his FHWIR he'll go back 2 or 3yrs to find a comment at NHs to find one that suits him. You are nothing but a hypocritical little boy, just like your daddy Blackfly. BTW Chrissy, I looked at Dollars Dump and he deleted the comment he made.

This shows both how dumb and what an inveterate liar this guy is. The comment I made 'this week'? There's a slight problem with that claim. The slight problem is that the date reads May 11, 2007, which happens to be when I moved. (Oops. Looks like jt has as much problem with the Roman calendar as he does deciphering those confusing interweb time stamps.) And then john t adds fiction to folly by insisting that I secretly deleted the comment (apparently just to spite him? who the hell knows?). Yeah, the comment has been deleted. Why, you can't even link to it and read it for yourself.

This is the sort of intelligence and honesty that congregates at the sewer known as the newsliars.

It is indisputable fact.  John T is an idiot.  I wonder if he ever figured out that it was the democrats who held the Senate for almost two years during GWB's first term.  I wonder if he ever figured out that the Space Shuttle program was ending.  I wonder if he ever figured out that using the term "your Lord and Master Dollar" is proof postive that he can't ever win an argument because he argues like a 5 year old.

I log on here to read about Fox News and I find a conversation worthy of a middle school ladies room. You as bad as what you're complaining about!

On crying over Haiti: did it ever occur to you, Cecelia, that the people who are crying on camera are crying about the horror that has befallen fellow human beings, and that it's not about themselves? I'm shocked that you would say "suck it up" under these circumstances. They're journalists, not Marines.

I would let this opinion pass without comment if it weren't for the chutzpah involved. I see the IP addresses so I know when people make comments under other aliases, and I'm the one who sees them even when they're blocked for obscenity or because of name-jacking. So you're free to state your opinion, but you'll forgive me if I find it a wee bit inauthentic.

Cecelia, you certainly don't seem like a very nice person. It seems to me that if you can't "win" with facts you resort to insults - very quickly. Blackflon too. That's why I say you seem no better than the people you are complaining about. It doesn't make this site look very good that a bitching session about some other site is allowed to take over a thread.

Good point C.  When FL wrote "It seems to me that if you can't "win" with facts you resort to insults - very quickly. Blackflon too. ", it's obvious.  You and FL have had very little contact, and based on what you have said to FL, there is no reasonable way any poster could come to FL's conclusion.  That means one thing, she's an old time poster who has had a seething hatred for you and B.  Pegleg Peg indeed!

No, FL, I never thought of that...

I prefaced my remarks with the statement that I knew that journalists were seeing something that is "monumentally frightful and grim" BECAUSE it never occurred to me that they might be affected by it...

Your brilliant deductions aside,.... these reporters are professionals.  Journalists fully understand that footage of a tearful marine is a story that conveys everything there is to know about what's happening.  They also know that a tearful reporter on camera is a story too and THAT is the problem.

These professionals have every opportunity to steel themselves before the camera starts rolling or the film (that they generally helped to edit) starts playing.   They have full knowledge that any footage of their emotionalism will become the topic of conservation and a thousand replays if they don't.

Radio and tv reporters have seen absolute horrors throughout the decades.  In WWII, in Vietnam, etc. and have managed to behave professionally.  And when they haven't, its the rarity of that event, in light of a stiff-upper lip ethos, that has conveyed the enormity of the event.

That's in the process of being lost now and replaced by an ethos that lauds emotionalism as proof of sincerity and disdains professionalism as artifice.

That's not good journalism and it's not good FOR the field of journalism.

I take your points. I do agree that reporters should not make themselves the story, though I don't see a tearful reporter as a "story" if the event he or she is reporting is momentous enough. I wonder if the responsibility doesn't belong to the producers rather than the reporters, though? Can't they tell their people on the ground to do another take if they genuinely tear up or choke up? I am presuming that most of these clips are not being broadcast in real time and that the decision to go with the emotions is being taken "upstairs". Emotions sell.

Since journalism seems to be more about ratings and the bottom line than the facts these days, the mantra seems to be "Given 'em what they want" above all else. Glenn Beck is a perfect example of someone who plays to, and with, peoples' emotions while playing loose with the facts, although, of course, he doesn't fall into the same category as someone who is supposed to be a factual reporter (or even a journalist for that matter).

Geraldo Rivera used to be awful for that back when he first came to national prominence - late 1960's /early 70's?. He used to cry at the drop of a hat. Everything was a BIG DEAL. My mom used to tune in to him to have a laugh at his OTT behaviour.

I'm surfing the news channels for Haiti updates.  David Shuster on MSNBC (Funny that MSNBC didn't have weekend anchors so they had to call him in.  At the conclusion of the last hour, Shuster (who has a terrible speaking voice for Television) said "live coverage from Port-au-Prince our reporters are there on the ground covering this incredible catastro-free."  Yep, he said catastro-free.  A minor event for sure, but I can't help thinking about how he would go on the attack if someone from FNC said that.
