CNN, MSNBC Cut Republican Candidate's Mic!

During Tuesday night's coverage of the Massachusetts special election, CNN and MSNBC aired only a fraction of the Republican candidate's speech. Fox News Channel aired both candidates' speeches in their entirety.

When Martha Coakley (D) took the podium to concede the election, all three channels aired most or all of the eight-minute speech. However, Republican Scott Brown's address was cut short on CNN after just seven minutes. On MSNBC Keith Olbermann cut Brown's mic and instead attacked the Republican candidate, talked about "teabaggers", and ran commercials. CNN only ran 26% of Brown's speech, while MSNBC aired 37%. Fox News Channel carried 100% of both speeches:

Yes, we know the Brown speech ran longer (27 minutes). But really, isn't this exactly the sort of thing Media Matters would trumpet if positions were reversed? You know it is.

And that's why we watch Fox

So, another way to look at it:   CNN ran about seven or eight minutes of each speech, and Fox spent three times as much time covering Brown's speech vs. Coakley's?

You remind me of an old story, Independent.

A thief grabs a woman's purse, knocking her into the path of an oncoming bus.  A bystander grabs the woman by the arm, pulling her out of the bus' path.

Independent, standing across the street, thinks:  "Hey, look at those two guys pushing around that woman!"

I simply don't understand how people can think Fox is overly biased. It baffles me. Here is another example of how they present both sides. Thanks for the bringing this to light.

Fox leans right just as MESSNBC leans left. The difference is that Fox has a more diverse guest list than does MESSNBC.
Of course the left doesn't approve of most of the democrats that appear on Fox. They think they are weak.
My theory is that the uber left democrats won't appear on Fox for fear of being ripped apart.

Liberals cannot debate logically. They resort to attacks and name calling when cornered.

Fox only appears biased by comparison to the other, liberal, insanely and consistantly biased news programs. When actual balance looks like bias, it should be obvious that there is something seriously wrong....but I'm preaching to the choir here.

Everyone knows there is a bias. Now if we can just get them to stop SAYING they are not biased, and therefore not journalists, then we can all go to our respective corners and watch the bias we want.

At least Mika from Morning Joe came out and flat out said the media needs to be up front about their bias.

She says that the hidden bias is the very reason FOX News even exists.

I went immediately to cnn.com just because it entertains me to compare and contrast. The only picture was one of Coakley. Yeah, SHE'S the news.

Very good point. Brown's speech was overly long and rambling, so there might be some temptation to truncate, but this was a singularly important election, so there is no excuse for cutting him down to 25 or 37% levels.

But, it was a very good speech - especially the parts wehre he was laying down what he believes. He may not be a "Republican", but he is surely a conservative. And that's enough for me.

Fox news is great, I enjoy all of it very much and I do think they try to be fair. You cant say that about MSNBC and Abc or  Nbc.  CNN does a fair job.
KO, CM and Rachel all were telling the Dems. to push the health care through anyway, boy are they Obama's people or what? They sure aren't "WE THE PEOPLE"
I pitty them!

Its kind of fun to tune into the Mainstream Media once in a while just to see what's on their minds.  I would never do this when anything important is going on, but once in a while its good to hear their commentary and guage how their minds are working.  It would make an intersting thing to study.  Somebody should write up a proposal and stuff it into a highway bill sometime.

Did you notice that Obama blames...wait for it, wait for it...Bush(!) for the Republican victory!?!!?
The only thing spinnning more than this is Ted Kennedy's pickled corpse!
So, dissatisfaction with a Republican President who has been out of office for a year drove the nation's most ardent liberals to vote for another Republican to fill the vacant seat of their most cherished and 'lionized' ueberliberal?
I can see Olberman and Maddow buying this, but no adult will.

The story of the night was not Scott Brown winning.  It was Coakley losing.  Plain and simple.  The narrative is how a democrat with a 30 point lead completely blew it in MA, not how a centrist republican managed to win.

You are right that Media Matters would trumpet this sort of thing, but is that the standard you want to hold yourself up to?  If you flip your metric to raw on-air time (probably a better metric since that's a news producer's currency), the left wing argues that Fox is the biased one.
January 20, 2010, 5:25:52 PM EST – Like – Reply

Well that was kind of my point, the way Media Matters manipulates its metrics to produce the results they want. In 2004 they attacked Fox for spending more time on GOP convention speeches than the equivalent speeches at the DNC--without mentioning that the GOP speeches were much longer, with some running overtime past 11:00 (which the other news channels also covered). It was strictly a way to ding Fox by manipulating data. (I also disagree that the big story was not Brown but Coakley, since they are really the same story. But that's not the main point I'm responding to.)

Don't the commenters here realize that Fox News essentially campaigned for Brown and is now serving as the Palin rapid response team for criticism? Isn't that bias? Or is that just responding to others' bias? Conservatives deserve better than Fox News.

Perhaps a reference?  All too often, in my personal experience, liberals equate giving voice to opposing opinions as hate or bias.

And I agree that conservatives deserve something better than Fozx News.  Too bad there isn't anything out there.

They try so hard to spin the facts and they always Fail. Fox News is the only worthy news outlet for me and my family. We don't trust anyone else, especially MSNBCand CNN for the very reason the graph shows above. Good job!

The far left is the most vocal when it comes to anti FNC stories. but the far right does have its own issues with the channel. One example could be the whole "birther" issue. The next comes from WorldNet daily who attacked FNC because they had some one from CAIR on (oreilly two weeks ago?). WND right now I guess is trying to expose them (CAIR) for what they really are. Then a few years back I read two articles-one claiming that FNC was too liberal while another which took the other view.

If CNN had ever bothered to come clean about why they let one of their VPs run around for two years telling everybody who would listen that US forces were "targeting" journalists, I might never have left them.  And, if there hadn't been a better product out there that I discovered due to my dissatisfaction with CNN, I wouldn't follow FOX now.

The simple truth is that FOX tries to get the facts right, it mostly confines their news reporters to reporting, and is straightforward about the bias contained in their opinion programming.  For all these reasons, they are head and shoulders above their competition, and the audience numbers show it.

And, they have Greta.

A point I haven't noticed anyone make yet: What Senetor-Elect Brown as the 'victor' has to say is far more relevant to the country than what the 'loser' has to say. We SHOULD expect him to say more, and coverage of what he has to say should be greater. THAT is fairness - to the American people.

The torrent of spam against this site, originating from Naperville IL, was a direct response to the impact that this post has had. Given the predominately vulgar nature (many of those were blocked automatically) it's either an immature schoolboy or a moron suffering from arrested development. But we have the IP, some unique tracking data, and page after page of evidence. Sometimes it's good to have a background as a prosecutor. Internet harassment is in fact a crime, and there are people in jail right now for doing what Pa... what this guy did. The report has already been filed.

The Einstein behind this thought that adding hundreds of vulgar comments would make the site slow to respond. Actually the moron did all that work for nothing. Comments don't affect the speed of the site at all; they are on completely different servers. The comments are hosted by Echo who have humungous capacity that treats the moron's spam as what it is: a drop in the bucket. And no matter what you put there, this site is on a completely different, secure server that the moron can't touch.
