HuffPo and Kos Spread New Fox Lie!

It's a special pre-Memorial Day treat from the Fox haters. Thanks to the miracle of video editing, some obscure blog came up with a startling scoop: Fox wants to see Barack Obama assassinated! And in the Fox haters echo chamber, it only takes minutes for the story to make it to all the key blue blogs:

  • White Insanity: Fox News is getting into the “let’s assassinate both Osama & Obama!” routine!
  • Presidential Candidates: Fox News Contributer Wishes For Barack Obama’s Assassination
  • Daily Kos: Fox News Journalist WANTS Obama DEAD
  • Daily Kos: Which USA will prosecute Liz Trotta? (likely none)
  • Huffington Post: FOX Pundit Wishes for Obama Assassination, Laughs
These fevered screeds (and there are dozens more) use the same carefully edited snippet, so we'll focus on the fine, fine journalism of Jeffrey Feldman over at HuffPo. He tells us:
During a live interview, FOX Contributor Liz Trotta jokingly wished for the assassination of Sen. Barack Obama.
The clip Mr Feldman uses is so short it virtually starts in mid-sentence:
LIZ TROTTA: and now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama--
SHAWN: Obama.
TROTTA: --um Obama, well both if we could.
ERIC SHAWN: Well talk about how you really feel, but do you really think--
And there it stops. Mr Feldman is, of course, outraged:
Trotta made known that the conclusions the public should draw were (1) that Sen. Obama and Osama bin Laden are equivalent, and (2) they both deserve to be assassinated....
right-wing pundits on FOX News and a variety of other broadcast outlets have regularly called the Sen. Obama by the name "Osama" in a systematic propaganda campaign to convince the American public that a sitting member of their government has secret ties to terrorists.....
The vast, vast majority of Americans do not want this kind of vile, utterly disgusting, "assassination" humor to become a recurrent part of our national debate.
We would be remiss if we did not note how Feldman described the interchange:
Hemmer quickly corrected Trotta, having noticed that she had said "Osama" when she meant "Obama."
Bill Hemmer?!? Oh well, there goes Mr Feldman's Pulitzer. Now that you know what the Fox haters want you to think, we will give you the parts of the interview they didn't want you to see:
TROTTA: The Daily News, Michael Goodwin, also said "We have seen an x-ray of a very dark soul".
SHAWN: Oh.
TROTTA: Which is a campaign-killer if I ever heard one. Well, you know, for years the media has told us that Hillary Clinton is the smartest person in the world. And that's up for grabs now, and the media's catching on to that as well. The vast right wing conspiracy blame has been undermined by her evasions, by her outright lies if I may say, by her pandering, by her race baiting, and now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama--
SHAWN: Obama.
TROTTA: --um Obama, well both if we could.
SHAWN: Well talk about how you really feel, but do you really think that--she didn't mean that she thinks that he going to get assassinated, and she apologized--
TROTTA: Well, that's beside the point, whether she meant it or not--
SHAWN: --and she's just using it in a historical context?
TROTTA: She's tone deaf, because it's a radioactive word. And the whole question of the first black man becoming a candidate for Presidency of the United States has all kinds of overtones and all kinds of caveats that really have to be considered in this thing. And his security has been a real issue. He's had bodyguards earlier than anybody else. Surely this woman had to know that that was a third rail to say "assassination". And it's hard to argue for her on this, because it isn't the first time she's made this step.
So are the Fox haters correct? Does Fox want to see Obama dead? Did Liz Trotta wish for his assassination? We report, you decide.

We emailed Mr Feldman with our concerns about the deceptively-edited clip he was using and the inflammatory, unjustified headline attached to his piece. We suggested that he embed the entire interview, not just the snippet, and even provided him with the embed code. To his credit, he replied promptly:
That was the clip brought to my attention at the time of posting. I've updated the post to include a link to the full interview.
The article now does include a parenthetical link to the complete interview but the heavily clipped snippet remains the only video embedded there, and hence the only video most readers will see. Meanwhile, the incendiary headline and overwrought prose remain, and even though Mr Feldman is now certainly aware of what Liz Trotta was saying in the missing footage he is still saying nothing about it in his piece.

UPDATE: Liz Trotta apologizes.

But what exactly did Trotta mean by:

--um Obama, well both if we could.

Who is we?

Was it a stand in for Hillary Clinton? Or did she mean herself?

Very poorly chosen words.

Ms. Trotta needs to come out and correct that statement. Otherwise, Fox will have to take action.

As a sidebar, I do find it bizarre listening to many - not all - on the political left scream about assassination suggestions. This same (again, not all) left that has been silent over every crackpot wishing to shoot Bush? A film was made with an actor portraying Bush being shot; and the audiences cheered when that occurred.

So, spare me your outrage.

Yes, the words did not come out well at one point. But the context makes it clear that she was not speaking for herself. She was rattling off a list of egregious tactics by Hillary Clinton, with the Obama assassination talk as the latest example. To spin this as TROTTA wanted to see Obama assassinated is just a flat out lie.

She has nothing to apologize for, and neither does Fox. That's not to say that one or both won't be browbeaten into doing so. It's just to say that on the merits, there is nothing to apologize for.

So the clip isn't edited john t? How is it that it begins and ends mid-sentence without editing? You know, the edit that happens to invalidate the claim that Fox is calling for Obama's assassination? The full context, available right here, shows that you are naive and the NHs are liars.

I think it would be wise for her to explain what she meant.

Obviously, she wasn't calling for his assassination. But given the nature of the issue, I think it'd be wise to go that extra mile.

And by Fox taking action, I mean some sort of statement.

When did everyone become so stupid? Was it when Hillary got on the Today and blamed a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy for her husband's cheating?

Was it the Left's construction of a conspiracy theory to explain JKF's killing by a Communist..

The Left are like babies and need to be told common sense.

It's obvious the woman does not want Obama killed

It's obvious she would want Osama killed

As soon as she said the wrong name, she was probably embarassed, did a little laugh as to acknoweldge how dumb it was to do that, and in the course of trying to get back to waht she was saying, she said what she said.

What difference does it make what she really meant.. she didnt mean to say it at all... and it's obvious she doesn't want Obama killed.

I understood the whole part of it. I wouldn't call that the 'context', as context is usually something more than four words. I took it as she garbled her words, they came out wrong. You can argue that she said that intentionally, that she really was wishing to see Barack Obama assassinated and thinks that's a grand idea. But when you see the entire segment it is clear she is strongly criticizing Hillary for even alluding to an assassination. It just seems to me that imakes it unlikely that she wants to see Obama killed. Despite the dozens of headlines that claim she does.

Man, you people are unbelievable. I saw the whole segment, and it was vile. I don't honestly believe Trotta would be happy if somebody killed Barack Obama, but I think she was joking as if she would. She made an offhand remark about somebody assassinating a US Senator and the first serious black candidate for President. You know it, too. She wasn't talking about anyone else.

What if I made a joke about raping your hypothetical teenage daughter. Would you have to believe I intended to really do it before punching me in the mouth, or at least calling me a name I deserved? I dunno--maybe that's the way some of you function: If a guy only *says* something about raping a fourteen-year-old but you know he doesn't *mean* it, you slap him on the back, buy him a beer and talk about how you both hate those politically correct liberals who just don't get how funny and harmless child-rape jokes are. Some values voters.

So just say it was wrong and appalling and leave it at that. Anything else makes you look pathetic and deluded.

When Trotta said, "...both if we could", she was suggesting that both should be killed. It wasn't a fluke. Liz is a typical jackboot licker of the Bush Regime (as Fox and many of their commenters are). She's fine with everyone dying as long as it's not a republican.

Despite some of the apologists here, it is clear that Trotta was making an aside that was personal. She was straying from her commentary and using the first-person plural ("...both if we could.") to distinguish the remark from her references to Clinton. Otherwise Trotta would have said "she" and likely would not have laughed gleefully at the notion.

I would agree, however that there are some ridiculous headlines stemming from this. My own says merely that Trotta joked about "knocking off" Obama. I would not have said that she was personally advocating assassination. But joking about it is pretty bad all by itself.

It just seems to me that imakes it unlikely that she wants to see Obama killed. Despite the dozens of headlines that claim she does."

I'm sorry, but you are wrong and the left blogs are accurate. She is critsizing Hillary that is for sure, but to say "Well, Both is we could" seems pretty cut and dried.

What else could she have meant? The slip pf the Tongue occured when she did the typical mixing up Osama and Obama's names. But she became of where that she had mixed up two different people and STILL followed with "Both if we could" It was a telling moment where her real feelings showed.

In fact Eric Shawn agrees with us. Because he replies with "talk to us about what you really feel."

Basically she is far more guilty of what she is accusing Hillary of. and all your spinning does nothing to change that.

Trotta admits "she's guilty of what she's accused Hillary of" in the sense that she too was tone-deaf. Trotta thinks that HRC was tone-deaf in not understanding how the word "assassination" in context with an African-American candidate could be interpreted. She thinks that she (herself) was tone-deaf in being at ease enough in the discussion to make a flip remark.

She started her thoughts about the accusation towards Hillary with the line "now we have what SOME are reading". In that context the "joke" she made was that these people ("some") who think Hillary is capable of instigating "someone [to] knock off Obama" also think "we"------- HRC,...people who support HRC,...people who support McCain,... or people who are Fox Newsies...(name your poison...) when it comes down to the wire, would also seek to knock off Osama for political expediency ("if we could") at the very last moment too.

Someone here said it best when they said that some believe Trotta slipped up and revealed that she actually wants Obama dead because she works for Fox News and that this is the sort of thing they suspect of people who don't hold their political views. This is how they view their political opponents, therefore it's not a leap for them to suspect it of any Fox News employee too, simply because they are a Fox News employee.

This sort of hideously negative and merciless thinking reveals something far more alarming about them, than they seem capable of realizing.

Cecelia: It's disturbing the amount of hatred these Leftist Americans harbor toward other Americans.

It is disturbing, Vince.

If they weren't so invariably slow on the uptake, it would be more disturbing... :D

Mr. Music
The added context does little to soften the blow of what Ms. Trotta said. She said "both if we could" and then laughed. As the interviewer said "talk about how you really feel."
