On The Mark
The "Cablers' Gain" piece, which is considerably heavier on entertainment programming than news, presents information that is not all that surprising.

Broadcast news will continue to dominate for some time, if for no other reason than inertia and the fact that many people still don't have cable/satellite. I also think many people still simply don't trust cable news. They want the imprimatur of ABC, CBS or NBC on their news. In any event, we are looking at roughly 25M vs. 3.5M for the key news periods. So, it is very important to keep in mind that the cable news audience remains relatively small. The election cycle may portend the first significant trend away from this, but there is still a very long way to go.

In the much broader world of entertainment, my own personal experience is that I seldom have any of the broadcast networks on anymore. Everything seems to be of the reality genre, and that is about as far removed from either reality or entertainment as possible. Nothing but crap as best I can tell.

If Huffington thinks Olbermann challenges the "conventional wisdom", she has a strange definition of CW. And a stranger definition of "challenge".

E.g., the conventional wisdom that says we must pull out of Iraq? The "CW" that says we must negotiate with Iran?

Yep, those conventional views are always challenged by Olbermann.

The Olbermann article was fun, but that isn't going to happen. I do think, after the well-chosen interim, we may be looking outside the box. No one is going to be Russert and shouldn't be. There was some speculation about Couric, and I think one of the links here even led in that direction. I don't think that is likely, either. I wouldn't be surprised to see Couric on some semi-vacuous cable news show, but I think seriously journalism passed her up some time ago.

The dumb blonde joke was priceless!

I don't think Mr. Woodward has to worry about what Ms. Huffington thinks of him, however the reversal of respect and disdain on her part (respect for Olbermann and disrespect for Woodward) represents her poor judgement.

Truth is truth, and THAT is what journalists are supposed to seek....And sometimes the conventional wisdom is right, sometimes it is wrong. Simply "challenging it" for the sake of it is a silly, half-baked conclusion. This also implies that unconventional sources are usually right....well....we know that is not the case.

Challenging conventional wisdom also means facing it, for real and allowing the representative of that perspective to have his/her opportunity to present the evidence supporting their case....another thing Olbermann has never done.

I loathe a world run by the arrogant left as represented by Olbermann and Huffington.

What a great lecture series. I heard Amanpour and Rubin at a small event a couple of years ago. What wonderful and different perspectives they offer. I've never seen anyone as skilled at refraining from cross-cultural judgments as Amanpour, and, because that can get a bit esoteric, Rubin grounds her very well. He's a master of common sense and balanced diplomacy. I'd love to attend this.

From the GQ piece above, this phrase:

---- Dubya’s long good-bye has demoted Rupert Murdoch’s infernal machine to the News Channel Time Forgot ....

Lots of perspective, lots of wisdom in that analysis. I don't see FNC in some donward spiral as others do, but it sure seems to be treading increasingly brackish water. I don't think Ailes is ever much for change, but Murdoch always knows the direction of the wind. Some fun and fascinating changes are in order at FNC!

The Rove piece is also interesting. I suspect he will fast become a liability, an albatross for Senator McCain. I don't imagine Senator McCain is happy to have Turdblossom on the tele as much as he is, thanks to FNC. I saw, bring him on. Every night. All night.

I just got around to watching the Hasselbeck interview on H&C. [I went to the H&C's website]. Hasselbeck was pretty and charming. and she exuded more intelligence than people give her credit for,

They showed pictures of her seated at the table when Michele Obama was the guest. I counted 5 liberals with Michele being the only conservative. Can you imagine what would happen if Fox put on a show that was so unbalanced against liberals (i.e., 5 conservatives to one lib). Can you imagine how the libs would howl?

Yet no one says anything about ABC's grossly imbalanced panel on the view. And no one said anything about the Captial Gang, an old CNN show, which often featured a similarly unbalanced disucussion.

If things get out of hand I won't have time to fiddle around, I may just have to turn on moderation for all comments so nothing will appear until it is approved. I would rather not so that, so this is a friendly request to keep the rules in mind as you comment over the next few days. The main thing I have against Dick Morris is that he helped save Clinton during his off year elections.

Though he is far from being a perfect political prognosticator I think he still has much political savvy and I enjoy listening to him. He says that Hillary would be a disasterous VP choice for Obama and I believe Morris is right.

I don't know if it is that Morris is wrong almost as often as Kristol or the toe-sucking thing or just the general yuckiness, reminiscent of a man who has just eaten a very large, greasy and undercooked chicken fried steak slathered with partially congealed cream gravy and is belching all about.

I think we have conclusively established that:

#1 Danny does a wonderful job of hurling insults at anyone who disagrees with him, without offering substantive, relevant discussion.

#2 Jeff/Royal King/Mr. Sucks does an inane job of hurling insults at anyone who disagrees with him, without ever engaging in an understandable exchange in the English language (thereby never knowing whether he, she, it or they are even remotely on topic).

Given that, might we establish that it is possible to stay on topic for 10 minutes?

Or, if you like, bring that issue up again the next time we have a NH thread. I will be delighted to disucss that subject with you in more depth.

I think that the one thing that we have proven conclusively this evening is that Mark is a master at the art of projecting.

What he accuses others of are really his own failings. He insults others for no reason (i.e dollar = Stalin) He writes posts that have nothing to do with cable news (i.e. 7:26 and 8:40). Because he lacks the courage to be honorable, he projects his failings onto others.

If OTM is still somewhere around, I am going to make one last attempt (probably futile) to bring you back to the subject of cable news.

I was watching Laura's interview of Sen Durbin on JUST IN. My Gawd I felt so sorry for the man. Under the stream of Laura's penetrating questions, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights. His face was ashen and his lips were quivering and I knew that he was totally humiliated as he himself did not believe his own answers.

Durbin was so pwned by Laura and so utterly humiliated . . . I look for him to have a complete change of heart. He must see how insipid and indefensible the Democratic platform is.I don't doubt that he will change from being a Democrat to a Republican within the near future. I say good for him.

Now OTM if you can't discuss this objective and non-partisan analysis of a cable news show . . . then you will have demonstrated yourself to be a fool (not an insult because you called OS a fool and I know you did not intend for it to be insulting) and a totally hopeless case. In that event I may have to leave.

Eric,

Did you watch the view when Michele Obama was on? There were five liberals ganging up on one lone conservative. And this was 5 liberals ganging up all at once; not being brought on one at a time. Where is your outrage over that? Is ABC in the tank for the Democratic party?

This is not an unusual occurrence in the media. How many times has George Will been the one lone conservative voice among two or three liberals? How many times has Bob Novak,of CNN, been the one lone conservative voice among four or five liberals.

No network is perfectly balanced. Perfection does not exist in the real world. But I tell you this, Fox's balance beats the industry standard by a long shot.

LoL. "Penetrating questions"? Laura Ingraham is a partisan idiot who simply repeats Republican talking points on air. She says nothing seriously witty or insightful and her questions are standard GOP flair. They're no different than the questions posed by Cavuto, Hume, O'Reilly or the Fox & Friends hosts.

She's a partisan Republican who was hired by a partisan Republican (Ailes) to appeal to partisan Republicans (you).

At least the View HAS a conservative host.

The "All-Star Panel" on the Special Report with Brit Hume does not have one. Mort Kondracke supports John McCain and is neither liberal nor a Democrat. The same can be said for Liasson. The regular format for the show is Kondracke-Barnes-Krauthammer.

Krauthammer and Barnes are both partisan conservative Republicans, and so is Hume.

So, no, as long as you watch Fox and bitch about ABC you're about as hypocritical as they come.

"Do you mean folks like Steph or even the sainted Russert can't ask fair questions because they have been partisan? If they can why not Laura?"

No, I said that she stacked her guest list full of partisan Republicans. It's not that she asks "unfair" questions of Democrats. There is no such thing as an "unfair question". What she does not do, however, is ask questions that challenge the basic assumptions of the RIGHT, of conservatives.

And more importantly, what she does not do is provide balance by allowing an equal number of guests from the left/dems/libs. In any measurable way. Her guest list, since day one, has been absolutely STACKED with Republicans, by a margin of nearly 3-1.

That's the main problem. Which is telling. You don't often see Newsbusters provide tallies of CNN or MSNBC's guest list breakdown. Probably because Bozell knows it'll make him look like a fool if he counts up the guests and it comes out fairly balanced, or it is imbalanced, but not so much as his beloved Fox News.

The numbers are what count, at the end of the day. And at the end of the day, the Republicans are the ones who own them on Fox.

It's a terrible shame, Danny, that you have fallen under the spell of the same folks who turned OW into a third rate hack site where everyone parrots the same view, and then only on those rare occassions when the posters even bother to have a view and try to be on topic or indeed any topic other than their mundane selves and those who have the unbridled temerity to posit a somewhat different view, and are now trying to do the same here. Although you and I have political and philosophical views which seldom intersect, I have recognized you, virtually since the time you began posting here, as analytical, adroit and adept. You added much to on topic, meaningful discussions. Now? Who knows, perhaps you are even Mr. Sucks under yet another name, although you do appear far too articulate and coherent. It is easy to mimic stupid, but not wise. Maybe, one of the spew and spurt sisters? Maybe, even just yourself? I'll resist the crippling paranoia you all seem to so enjoy, the conspiracy theories which you all so relish, and just assume you are simply Danny.

What I find so outrageously amusing is that, even in this site's preoccupation with News Hounds, you stand out in your efforts to tie people to that site, to promote that site well beyond it importance and worth. For the record, not that you and the members of your little newly formed cabal seem to recognize the truth or even care to search for it: I have visited NH perhaps ten (10) times in the last couple of years, and posted perhaps five (5) times, although I suspect less, a number far less than the times Jeff/Royal King/Mr. Sucks has trolled there, by example. I never knew who Ellen Brodsky was until I read about her (a classical example of someone achieving fame or infamy as it would be through the publicity of one seeking to denigrate her). I think NH is an abomination of shoddy writing and spurious comments. I marvel at the free advertisement this site has given NH. Again, I am sure this is all well beyond the ability of you and the members of your cabal to accept since it doesn't fit into your preconceived and contrived notions of how a very insular and limited part of the world operates.

Frankly, none of that matters much to me. I don't value the opinions of your cabal members enough to waste the time and space.

What does matter is that the members of your cabal, having succeeded in neutering OW, turnining it into a showcase of monolithic, vacuous opinion and complacent head-nodding are now bored with it. No surprise there. No surprise they seek the limited sustenance they require elsewhere. And much like people who have left Chicago, Atlanta, Houston because they found the places unpleasant, seek to turn Madison, Savannah and Austin into the places they left, they wish to recast this good and decent in that shoddy mould. It is a strange facet of human character, but not a unique one.

So, please, enjoy the devastation you are bringing about. Hold dear to your prize. But, don't be surprised if you find the prize, when won, not worth having.
