Caution: Geniuses at Work
Times are tough in the Fox haters echo chamber. Has the economic slowdown also affected our pals the newshounds (another fine product of the Outfoxed mafia)? Perhaps so, since despite the exorbitant funding that keeps their place afloat, they can't seem to muster the dogpower to do their job and are already begging for help.
Tossing more mongrels into the mix is only going to make the canine confusion even worse. The sort of confusion that can't keep a simple spin point straight from one day to the next. Example: the evil phrase "flip-flop", and how Fox never uses it to describe a Republican:
So what happens when one of the bowsers stumbles across Fox using the term on a Republican (as they have hundreds of times)? All of a sudden, the biased bassets do a complete 180:
- Republicans couldn't call John "I was for it before I was against it" Kerry a flip-flopper often enough. To this day, that campaign is remembered for the Swift Boaters and for the words, "flip-flop," and Fox News couldn't get enough of either. That "flip-flop" is totally absent from this report (imagine the tone if a Democrat was doing this), is yet more proof that "fair and balanced" is nothing more than a crock of bull.
- Mitt Romney's endorsement yesterday of John McCain was characterized not as a flip-flop but as a matter of pragmatism.
- Tip-toeing Around Romney's Flip-Flops. The f-word has disappeared from the vocabulary of Fox News personnel. If ever there were a segment demanding the use of the f-word -- flip-flop -- this was it. But can you heard the f-word anywhere in this segment?
Substitute host Brenda Buttner wondered about McCain's flip flopping. (You might be surprised that Buttner would ascribe such a negative term to one of her own, but doing so is a tactic I've seen Cavuto employ countless times. It's a way of preemptively spinning criticism that the audience might hear from other sources.)Yes, calling someone a flip-flopper is now a tricky Fox tactic to defend them. And it will be until the next time it's used on someone other than a Republican.
But we wonder if the kennel really needs more volunteers, or whether they are simply succumbing to the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Lately, there have been more and more posts that are just pointers: look what someone wrote over there. A lot easier than creating original content, but a danger when your writers are not exactly Einsteins. Just today Priscilla turned in a marvelous pointer:
Fox Recycles Its Garbage. On June 19th, conservative Monica Crowley, while interviewed on the Laura Ingraham show...No, Monica Crowley was not being interviewed. She was hosting the program. But it gets better:
...claimed that Barack Obama’s brother Malik Obama’s statement shows that Barack Obama “has a really solid Muslim background.” Problem is that this story, circulated by the right wing blogosphere and Brit Hume , has been discredited...Well, the contents of a newspaper report have been debunked, but Obama's "muslim background" has been raised by more than just the "right-wing". Even the sainted Tim Russert:
MR. RUSSERT: We've had a Clinton official in New Hampshire resign because he began to talk about your drug use as a, a young man. A Clinton official resigned here who talked about--on the Internet about your Muslim background. But let's return to Priscilla's brilliant piece of investigative journalism:
SEN. OBAMA: Right.
but that doesn’t stop Fox from repeating a story... Ah, the Fox beat goes on and on.... Fox is still getting mileage from this. Those who watch Fox will continue to be validated in their “suspicion” of Obama... Fox never lets facts get in the way of its propaganda because facts are unimportant in a "faith based" Fox world. The beauty of all this is that Priscilla's reading skills seem to be highly impaired. She's goes on about Fox repeating a story, "getting mileage" from it, yada yada yada, but none of this is true. Because the Media Matters story she is pointing to isn't about a Fox News program, or even a cable news program. It's all about a radio show that wasn't broadcast on Fox at all!
We pointed this out, and immediately came the ritual knee-jerk responses, e.g.:
- Nice try pretending it didn't happen on [Fox] News. Just apologize and go back to your inane smear campaign.
To reinforce Crowley’s statement, Ingraham played the original Hume piece.... right wing pundits (Ingraham), who are also employed by Fox News, never lets [sic] facts get in the way of its propaganda...All of that is nothing short of amazing, given that Laura Ingraham wasn't even there: she's been off her radio show for weeks!
It's bad enough when the biased bassets lie about something they saw on Fox News. But if they're going to outsource the heavy lifting to other sites, perhaps they do need additional volunteers: people who can read English and know the difference between radio and television. liars fox news

I don't know if Fox did a correction on the Hume story, but I assume if they found it to be incorrect they would do so, consistent with past practice. But that is off the subject, which is the recklessness of the newshounds, whose "corrected" story merely replaced old falsehoods with new ones. Even the headline is false!

"Substitute host Brenda Buttner wondered about McCain's flip flopping."
Now I didn't see the segment,so I can't comment on how it was handled in this particular situation. But it doesn't take alot of imagination to see how bringing up someone's flip-flopping could be used as a way to pre-empt it's use as a criticism.
Simply pose the question,"Is John McCain a flip-flopper?",then have a guest come on to say why it's not true.Of course,if the intent is to debunk the potential criticism,it would probably be best to leave the giant flip-flop off the set.
"Well, the contents of a newspaper report have been debunked, but Obama's "muslim background" has been raised by more than just the "right-wing"."
Does the fact that"muslim background" has been raised by more than just the "right-wing"." make it any less debunked?I thought the "madrassa" story as well as this latest 'muslim background" story had been pretty well put to bed.BTW,did Mr Hume issue a retraction?
As for Mr Russert's question 'bringing up' Sen Obama's "muslim background" , you didn't post Obama's answer, but this seems to be a classic example of what I had alluded to earlier, bringing up a topic (flip-flop,muslim background) as a way to put it to rest.

Lord, Johnny, it's hard to stay on topic when you're given a lead like my predecessor did ....
Still: With reference to Hume, when does repeating something demonstrably false begin to carry the same weight as originating a demonstrably false statement? I don't want to suggest Hume reached that point in this instance, but he does seem to enjoy a game of fancy in which he goes to the very edge, steps back and says, "I didn't say that Sister Perpetua Primm of the Mother House of the Little Sisters of the Poor and Dirty, Lesser Codsbury, Northumberland, has trouble keeping her virtue about her. I said that Sir Reginald Pantyshield of Outer Dingleberry, Buckinghamshire said that. No one believes it because Sir Reginald always makes outrageous statements about women who have taken orders. I was just repeating it to discredit Sir Reginald." Hume gets just about that ridiculous at times, and, of course, always to further a rather obvious agenda he has, or it just happens to further such an agenda. When he finally crosses that line, there could be trouble.

You want to make this about Hume, who did not repeat something demonstrably false but reported a story from the Jerusalem Post. This thread is about how the newshounds used a radio program, first using it to smear Fox which did not broadcast it, and then to smear Laura Ingraham, who had nothing to do with it. You've had your say on the Hume aspect and that will close that tangent. Period.

Did you attempt to comment on the NH site. Was your comment deleted?
NVH, if you are honest, you have to admit that you are treated far more respectfully here than I have been when posting at NH. This goes against NH's publicly stated policies which say that they welcome opposing points of view provided that the poster is civil and stays on topic and that flaming posts will be deleted.
NVH, since you are a regular contributor to that community, why do you never raise that issue there? You have no problem bitching about whatever you think is wrong at this site.

My experience with NH is probably less than yours and less than nvh, I would assume, but you are both correct in what you are saying. NH is a poor site on many levels, and I say that as one who finds much fault with FNC. The one note of caution I would add is that it is clear many of the supposed FNC fans at this site, and perhaps some of the "dissenters" never watch FNC. The same can be said for OW as well, where it is very clear that hardly any of the commenters ever watch Olbermann. Obviously, the comments from these people are not particularly valuable. I except the present company, of course, and I don't view this as a reflection of this site, which I view as exemplary, but only of some of the commenters so anxious to share what they don't know.

For the time being, IMHO the best way to handle OTM is to doubt his sincerity. For instance: "yeah he says that here, but Gawd knows what he might be saying somewhere else."
I am willing to accept him again as a credible poster, but only if he takes some corrective steps that I have mentioned. The longer he does not take those steps . . . his inaction only confirms my growing impression that he is not honorable; rather he is duplicitous.
BTW: I did not even ask him to go to the Olberamnn site and say that Olbermann is not very bright or repeat any of the other negative things OTM has said about Olby here.

So now for an post that won't make anyone happy.
I've mostly given up trying to have dialogue with anyone at the NH site.Given my background in working with "difficult populations",I often try to establish common ground with people (though I'm usually bright enough to recognize a lost cause).I enjoy a good argument with reasonable people, and found it impossible to accomplish that at NH.
Although there are some bright, articulate people who post there,it is entirely too common for someone with an opposing view, with whom I was having an interesting exchange, to be labeled "troll" and unfairly attacked.
This is not to say that there are not vulgar and irrational "trolls",along with a genuine sampling of outright racists come to spread their hate (the Jena threads got pretty sick).
And then there are the perhaps well-meaning people who open thier post with "You moronic libtards" and end it with 'you idiots",then stamp thier feet and whine when thier posts are deleted. How long would a post last here if it opened with "You stupid conservaloons" or whatever is the slur du jour. CE from last night is a good example.
As for the articles there, yes, they are sometimes partisan hit pieces. But even a partisan hit piece can resemble the truth.I often take them with several grains of salt, particularly when there is no attached video or transcript.(That is one thing Media Matters does well). But the reason I pay ANY attention is that many of the posts mirror what I have seen of Fox with my own eyes.
I don't join in any "cults of personality",and although I find them distasteful(from what I've seen),I don't have much to say about O'Reilly or Hannity.Though I find it very sad that BOR does not realize the visciousness and damaging import of his statements about Scott Hornbeck.
I would not want to run or moderate a blog. What a pain in the ass it must be.As for complaining,I don't recall complaining about much here other than contesting the posts (isn't that what you're supposed to do?).
As for complaining at NH,I've always found it best to address my concerns to people in private, where they are not put in the position of saving face in front of a community. So how do you know I haven't?

NVH,
You make your many of your complaints public here. Why no public complaining at NH?
Yeah it would be off topic if you complained in a public forum, but I have not seen the prospect of being off topic deter you much here. So, why should that prospect deter you there?
Also, NH has an off topic forum. Supposedly you could complain there and the moderators will leave you alone. As you have suggested, NH has problems that transcend their moderators (although having fair moderation would help). There is a problem with the entire NH community.
I know I would publicly complain. if I were in your position. Can it be that you haven't given up on NH at all? Maybe one reason for your reluctance to criticize is this: You are afraid they won't let you post there any more. Were that to happen, that would go against NH's stated policies, but as you and I know, going against NH's stated policies does not seem to deter their leadership very much. Any more than the prospect of going off topic seems to deter you.

No, but when you slander someone (and OTM seems to agree now that what he said is slander . . . certainly grossly disrespectful and insulting), the honorable things is to take corrective action concerning your past slander or gross insult.

No I have not read all of that stuff. I did, however, ask you in my 3:47 post why you did not make public criticisms. You answer seemed to be that you did not do public criticisms at NH; you only criticized in private . . . maybe.
If you now want to revise your answer and are willing to point me to your public criticisms of NH, I would be happy to listen.
Regarding the last part of your post I say quit being absurd and overly dramatic. All am asking OTM to do is this: disown and apologize for statement he says is erroneous. The statement in question is grossly disrespectful if not outright slanderous. If the statement is wrong (as OTM now says that it is) there is no question that the only honorable course for OTM is to recant his perjury.
Should he fail to do that . . . should he fail to behave honorably . . . there will be no forced marriages or duels or any other crazy, overly-dramatic nonsense that you mind concocts.
It's just that I and some other posters here will not respect OTM as being an honorably person unless he behaves . . . well, honorably.

i don't want to sound critical but:
In a conversation about the BOR outburst clip which compared his ravings to another well know bombastic 'character' ,to comic effect in my opinion, some one said I was hoist on my own petard when someone wrote "what if it was KO in that clip",in spite of the fact that I had written that the clip would ahve been just as funny to me if it had been KO,or any other bombastic character acting like a loon.
I took note that I recognized Ann Richards on a King of the Hill episode, and this was construed as a "defence of Ann Richards.
I called KO a "scumbag",and had to spend considerable time convincing someone that I hadn't been speaking about the ADL,plurals and singulars be damned.
And now ""You said that you recognize their lies and hypocrisy in moderation".
I never submitted a research paper that scored below A.My creative writing prof thought I should write a book, and my employers give me high ratings for communication skills.

Despite the fact that he says that he has given up on trying to have a dialogue with the member of the pound; still, he hangs out there. In one of the threads that Johnny Dollar directed us to, I noticed that NVH among the first (if not the very first one) to post in the thread.

"Attacked unfairly",yes,I was refering to the posters on the threads, who sometimes are not a credit to "liberalism",but not the mods.Sorry for the confusion.
(hypocrisy in moderating). As I stated in my post,I wouldn't want to moderate a blog. How does a moderator control a mob?Can a moderator control what people do on a blog, other than deleting. If you want to call it hypocrisy,be my guest.I'd call it disorderly.
And speaking of hypocrisy in moderating, there's a little fellow, pointy head, running around here with the unfortunate screen name of O'Reilly Sucks.how long would I last with a screen name of KO Sucks. But I don't make a lot of that. It's not my blog.

FF,
I think that the folks at Fox News should quote from Pantyshield often. That would definitely liven up their news presentation.

I'm pretty sure you mean a screen name of BOR Sucks, but I think you'd be OK with that name. You might be challenged, but allowed nonetheless.

NVH you said that people are unfairly attacked. Ye,t in the forum, the moderators say that they have instituted a new policy; that posts that are personal attacks will be deleted immediately. Why would tha statement (in the light of your experience) not be a lie?
Why was I asked to make my point and leave by Ellen Brodsky when a moderator has posted in the forum that NH welcomes opposing viewpoints as long as the poster is civil? I guarantee you I was civil. Amused and I were having an interesting non personal discussion. Is that pronouncement in the forum not another lie? What is your term for it?

Well,I wouldn't use a screen name like
BOR sucks. Not my style. But wouldn't that fall under "juvenilia".
"Show me ONE "partisan hit piece" at this site." It would be pointless because you wouldn't agree with me.Just as I might not agree with what you thought was a"partisan hit job",because it's a matter of opinion.I will say though, that if you never saw a 'partisan hit job on MSNBC,CNN, or Fox,then you're probably not paying attention.
"Who allows the posters to attach unfairly? The mods."
Now I'm getting into shaky ground in terms of my knowledge base.I've seen threads shut down at NH because of the lunacy that was afoot.I've seen violently threatening and vulgarly racist posts that generated a wild counteratack from 40 or 60 regular posters. How do you shut that down.I've been deleted myself.Sometimes fairly, sometimes I thought not.As I stated earlier,I've seen posts from insulting snots who then played the hypocricy card. And I've seen posts that were deleted for not discernable reason.
How do you stop that sort of carrying on.I wouldn't want the problem.I'm not sure that J$ would want 50 unruly posters of any stripe. So it's a conundrum.Yes,NH is a partisan site.Hypocritical,I'm not willing to go that far in my description.

NVH,
I also don't think that you have addressed my point about their public statements being at odd with the way they are moderating.
Your saying that moderators have a hard job is a cop out. To some degree they have made their job harder by their inconsistency. If they just did what they said they were going to do and delete posts with personal attacks immediately; there would be a lot less craziness at their site.
And of course the moderators would be taking a step away from being hypocritical liars.
BTW: why isn't J$ not allowed to post at NH when he is being civil? I am sure Ellen Brodsky would be allowed to post here without her posts being summarily deleted.

NVH,
pwned was a typo. What FF meant to say was owned. You were owned or completely dominated; just as if you were a monster in Warcraft and were thoroughly defeated.
You have been pwned because you have contradicted yourself (whether you are willing to admit it or not), and you are also pwned because you have not refuted very many of the issues that have been raised. A good example is your feeble attempt to defend the moderators against the their obvious hypocrisy and mendacity. Their job is sooo difficult just does not cut it as a defense,
There is more I can say, but that is enough for now.

Hmm. She has in fact posted here, hit and run style. Made a charge of some sort, promptly disappeared and never addressed any of the responses, if I recall correctly. She was not deleted of course.

Well, FF, I doubt you enjoy controversy THAT much considering that a lone entity by the name of Scott keeps you from joining OW.
I must surmise that had you been the target of OTM's insults you might feel OTM to be less of a lark than you do now...
Let's cover some of this shall we... Though he says he was thoroughly bored by the subject of Keith Olbermann, OTM would not leave the site called OLBERMANN WATCH though fully aware that this was the wish of the owner.
Though ever so eager to engage in and abet trolling, trolls, sock puppets, and strawman sock puppets to the point where Bob Cox had to install screening software, OTM now says that this was the ruination of OW. Of course this completely contradicts OTM's expressed words to Bob, saying that he understood the site would not survive without the software.
So where does Mr. " Bored by K.O." OTM go to express his displeasure at Cox and Dollar after he finds himself outside of an electrified fence at OW-- to a K.O. fan site...
Where does he park it after being kicked out of OW--- at Stalinist JD's Place...
FF, it's all very well and good that you think OTM is a hoot.
Those of us who had to put up a whole lot more from him than I'd wager you have from "Scott", surely don't... We know he's a snake. In a less structured setting, he'd prove it to you too...

Not that anyone will read my post, but I scanned the 85+ posts above, and they all seem to be talking about whether others are "on topic", or other such violations these posters have committed!!!!!
There are a lot of things going on in cable news this week. We've got a media doing everything they can to GIVE this election to Obama, and Obama using them to his advantage to turn himself into a victim.
If we're aware his tactics, we can at least tell our family and friends of his
"strategery" and let them vote based additional information we observe. Especially since we know the media won't do it's job!

I checked out NH's comments a couple of times and a funny thing occurred one of those times. Someone pointed out that the number of commenters exceeded the number of visitors online and that one of NH's own was trolling... and guess the identity of one of the commenters?
HAHAHAHA That is my take on NH.
Not that it matters but a clarification:
"defense of Ann Richards": her status of being such a household name so that even ole little NVH recognized her on the great Mike Judge's show post Beavis, so therefore OTM was indeed on the mark once again for his cogent reference.
OTM just said that "I'm pretty low down the food chain ..." on the other thread so maybe NVH had better go over there and defend him.

FF,
I know that you didn't; however, legend has it that the folks at Warcraft did. Apparently, after a player was defeated by a certain monster the machine was supposed to taunt the player with the script, "you got owned." However the computer programmer mistyped "owned," so the taunt became "you got pwned." And, people have been using the derived word ever since.
When I suggested that you had mistyped the word, I was kidding NVH. Since she did not understand the meaning of the word, I was playfully referring to the words origins.
I am sorry if my little joke put you in a bad light and caused you any discomfort. Unlike what OTM is willing to do, I now recant my slander against you, and I sincerely apologize.

Danny, I didn't feel slighted but didn't catch the sarcasm. The term far precedes Warcraft, however. It comes from PVP FPS's where the action is so fast you chat with the folks you frag and mistypings are common. I remember it from UT way back in the day.

Kristol's reaction, along with that of fux noise and many other wingnuts tells me that Moveon.org hit the sweet spot with this ad, and the wingnuts know it.It was certainly no leap of genius to put it out there given the unpopularity of this misadministration and this military misadventure. They've got to know this is a weak point for mcinane and for the party of wingnuts in general. I wish it were the convention that whenever someone mentions service they automatically listed branch, arm of that branch, perhaps unit.I knew there'd be no mention of that with the fictitious molly, her fictitious son and its fictitious service. One wonders as well why, since the ad names J. S. mcinane directly that response has to come from a neocon fair and balanced commentator on the wingnut propaganda channel? That would seem to highlight the bind mcinane has put himself in with regard to this atrocity.
