"NEW YORK — Fox News is poised to reclaim the title of the most-watched cable news network in the key advertising demographic in the second quarter of 2008."

OK folks, any predictions on the conspiracies which some of our fellow posters here will invent to explain this?

BTW, congrats to Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes, and all of the many many fine people in front of and behind the cameras at Fox News. Even if you don't reclaim the title now, thanks for being so good you cause so much heartburn to Keith Olbernotaman.

I see that Michelle Malkin has posted that they have raised over $1 million with their internet webcast "telethon". Well Done Michelle.

Now the heat is on Keith Olberman to come up with a creative way to make her worst person in the world. Afterall, she is helping raise money to help our troops, the same troops that KO calls cold blooded killers.

Anyone wanting to say that KO wasn't referring to our troops, then I direct you to visit this link and answer Johnny's question.

Olbermann's reasoning:

After a tedious tribute to the intelligence of John Dean that should lead all of us to accept his word without question, Olbermann concludes that John Dean found a hole in the new law that will potentially allow a President Obama to criminally prosecute because telecoms were not explicitly immunized from criminal prosecution.

Now, his reasoning continues, pushing for a law that only allows for wimpy civil liability that wasn't going to pass anyways would have made Obama soft on terror.

There is no other way to continue with his line of reasoning than to quote him:

"I think it can be argued that if he's caught the same hole in the bill that Dean has, his best course is actually to shut up and take the criticism and hope the Republicans don't see the loophole."

By voting for the bill, Obama takes the wind of McCain's only talking point, terror, and then when he wins the election, he can appoint his own AG to criminally prosecute!

Brilliant! The law also places the telecoms in contempt for failure to cooperate so I bet future criminal convictions are a sure bet for following the law. No question about it.

Finally, "[i]f it isn't the Senator's game plan, he'll catch hell from me about it later."

Oohh, that's a threat if I ever heard one.

I forgot to mention the obvious ... irony?

Obama helps to enact a law forcing compliance and later prosecutes for that compliance. Brilliant!

Ashley:

Let's withhold any judgment on Malkin's efforts. We all know that the North/Hannity troop fundraisers have put virtually no money in the hands of our troops. Largely a boon to charitable organizers and PR for North and Hannity .... All rather despicable in my view. Malkin's efforts might have the same result. But, I won't even conclude that yet. In fact, I think it is likely that the way Malkin has set this up, our troops will be true beneficiaries of her efforts. If so, and as much as I vehemently disagree with Malkin's philosophical and political positions, and recoil at her exceedingly and characteristically nasty demeanor, I will be the first to applaud her efforts. After all, supporting men and women who have placed themselves in danger at the behest of the government, however boneheaded and fraudulent the government may have acted, is supremely American. Our troops deserve nothing less than our unqualified support. So, let's withhold our judgment until we get some complete picture of this outreach. And, when we confirm the authenticity of the outreach, let's then applaud heartily.

I hope you agree, as I do, that the fact that these efforts are necessary, and these efforts are, indeed, necessary as evidenced by the ghastly care our returning troops receive and by the sheer number of such efforts by people of all political and philosophical positions, is a disgrace. I feel completely estranged from my government in this regard. What rich and tragic irony it is that the very people who placed our troops in harms' ways are the ones who disregard them as troublesome burdens on their return in need. The shame of Bush and the ueber chickenhawk Cheney is compounded by the fact that they feel no shame about this. And, when I hear Barnes, Beck and the chickenhawk Krauthammer applaud the brilliant military leadership of Bush, the ueber chickenhawk Cheney, et al, I say shame on them, too.

Lastly, with reference to Johnny Dollar piece at OW, and with all deference to Johnny, his hyperbole overtook his analysis. Reasonable people thinking and acting reasonably recognize that the use of "Pentagon" refers not to troops in the field, but the top brass. That has been the journalistic and popular convention in this country since the DoD was first created and the Pentagon (building) was first occupied. Add to this the undeniable fact that the Bush Administration has turned the Pentagon, the upper level personnel, into nothing more than political operatives, and I think Olbermann's reference becomes rather clear and rather different than that attributed to him. When otherwise bright, reasonable people make unreasonable statements, often in the form of hyperbole, those people do not become inherently unreasonable, they have not revealed some character flaw. They have merely shown they have a high level of passion about issues important to them. I consider that nothing less than admirable.

"Now one might question this ex post facto revelation, especially since we know that the Pentagon is largely staffed by...US troops! They command the soldiers in the field who, under Oralmann's construction, would then become the moral equivalent of contract killers."

Read again: The Pentagon is largely staffed by whom? And whom do they command? Is Olbermann well-known for the vernacular? Are all of his references ones clearly recognized by the populus? How many troops has he had on his show that were not heading an organization but just the rank and file?

Keith Olbermann serves such a wonderful public service as an easy resource to see how the radical left mind rationalizes and excuses the behavior of their shepherd.

Let me see if I understand this logic....SNOBamessiah is endorcing a cynical ploy of supporting a law he would fight on principle because of shallow political concerns while plotting to exploit a loophole to reverse direction and criminalize procedures deemed in the bill vital to national security (once the pol attains office).

Either excusing the reversal for supporting telecom immunity because of political concerns only or because of some diabolical plan to actually screw his fellow patriotic Americans after he changes hats, Olbermann covers the idea that this was a necessary position because of those evil righties.....which is exactly how Nixon operated.....He always framed his behavior as a response or in anticipation of the actions of his "enemies."

Olbermann is still guilty of hypocrisy.....calling such behavior manipulative, evil and a threat to all Americans only when conservative pols do such things while taking a much less hyperbolic and understanding approach when his candidate does the same exact thing. The left's spokesman is doing his best to whitewash the issues as they come up.

To be fair, the last 7 years have not been exactly honesty and integrity, candor and forthrightness, inclusiveness and investment, peace and prosperity, prudence and wisdom.

To be fair, in light of the last 7 years, we ought not dismiss critics out of hand. Much of the criticism is valid, if not tardy, and many of the critics ought be praised (although, candidly, I have trouble doing that with Olbermann).

To be fair, in light of the last 7 years, we ought not be lavish in our praise of those who propped up those who gave us the last 7 years. Barnes, Beck, Dobbs (spottily), Hannity, Hume, Krauthammer, (Judith) Miller, O'Reilly, et all, ought to be held accoutable.

To be fair, Hannity and North participate under a shell organization as well. We should be skeptical about all such organizations and those who front for them. When they are proven honest and upright, we ought to reward them with our words and our actions.

I too share your dismay and astonishment that fund raising activities are neccesary for the care of American soldiers.A local group recently was raising money to send "care packages" to Iraq containing tooth paste and insect repellent. My first thought was, WT....We can afford tax cuts in wartime, and billions for a dubious "missile defence",but we've got to sell BBQ to keep our soldiers in toothpaste.

As for KO.When I heard of his remarks,it never occured to me to presume that he was speaking of 'grunts' in the trenches. It seemed obvios that his point of reference was the civilian command in the Pentagon.

But words are slippery things.Though I find it odd that many of those who will grant no benefit of the doubt to KO on his wording were leading the charge to defend Mr Limbaugh over his "phony soldier" remarks or equating a brain damaged vet with a suicide bomber.

Perhaps Mr Limbaugh's words were open to some leeway in interpretation. But then certainly the same curtesy should be extended to KO.

Olbermann's Kos diary was exquisite. He certainly tried to cover every base, first by starting with the "loophole" angle that the genius (and admittedly an immunity expert...) John Dean used to douse what K.O. described as "any anger simmering beneath my surface."

Oh, brother...

Olbermann jumped from that to ALSO taking up the argument that political expediency (and telephone eavesdropping...) isn't such a bad thing when in the hands of OUR guy... How very reasonable and reassuring...

I was especially taken with Olbermann's little bon mot that Dean is worth a baker's couple of dozen Glenn Greenwalds and an extra Keith Olbemann on top of that... (A spoonful of wry self-deprivation helps the snark go down doesn't it?...)

Well, it goes without saying that even an immunity grabbing stoolie is worth more than you, Mr. Olbermann, but just stop right there when it comes to Greenwald, who hasn't stooped to the sort of ridiculous dissembling that you've just engaged in. And "engaged in, after having issued a "Special Comment" on the subject that sounded like something Alexander Solzhenitsyn would say to Stalin if he could visit him briefly in hell.

So go ahead, Keith, suck up to the crackhead Kossacks and try to hide your hypocrisy by shielding yourself with a baby boomer icon who wraps himself in a simplistic media driven narrative of his own heroism. Just leave Greenwald the hell alone. He may not be any more correct on the issues than you are, but he's several thousand baker's dozens-- the man.

If we are saying that Dean was granted immunity to avoid prosecution and conviction, we would be mistaken. Dean was, in fact, convicted, sentenced, reported to the BOP site assigned, was whisked away by the US Marshalls to a safe incarceration site, testified under a sentence reduction agreement and helped secure a number of convictions. I would think that among many of the posters on this site, such cooperation would be lauded. Law and order in its purest sense. Perhaps, since his testimony resulted in some disgrace to conservatives and to the Republican party, the feeling is not shared. Certainly, many posters were delighted when Bush let Scooter evade the hoozgow. Perhaps, some victimization syndrome?

Personally, I find Dean offensive. I always find snitches and ratfinks offensive. Even if I could tolerate Olbermann himself, I'd avoid "Countdown" because of Dean. But, Dean did pay, in some measure, for his sins. And, I certainly know many of the posters at this site have no objection to snitches and ratfinks on a general level.

Now for happier news, the Rosen book looks fascinating, and I have always wanted to know more about Mitchell. I have often wondered if he weren't the only honorable one out of that massive group of Nixon scoundrels. Even a horse's ass can be honorable.

As for Rosen himelf, I understand that his reporting and writing abilities eclipse his on-air abilities. Frankly, I found even those rather good, and far better than say a Cameron. So, the book will be a win-win. Mitchell and Rosen. Interesting. Enjoyable.

Greenwald holds his own well against Olbermann:

"No political leader deserves that sort of blind faith -- not Bush and not Obama. That's how a small child thinks about his Daddy, not how a citizen should think about a political leader.

"Down that mental road lies uncritical devotion to a Leader for even the most unjustifiable political acts. Depicting a bill with telecom amnesty when Bush supports it as 'textbook Fascism,' only to then depict Obama's support for such a bill as 'refusing to cower to the Left,' is simply inexcusable."

The charity wasn't established (in 1990) to provide money to wounded vets, although it certainly would be one of the best ways to utilize the money. This whole topic came about as a smear to Malkin who has to prove to OTM that she will not misuse funds, even though she was only hosting a fundraiser that does have the express goal of donating for our troops.

US $7 Million expended to distribute US $5 Million. Even the government does better than that! You don't think that is a good return, Ashley.

Don't get me wrong. It's a noble, noble mission statement. And, Lord knows we all have to do our part to assist the troops and veterans the Bush Adminsitration has so callously neglected. My only point is that there are many charities, many individuals out there that do a far better job. Unless of course, ABC, the BBC, Senator Grassley, the AIP, the S/S WA, the CVC and the "charity's" own balance sheet are simply lying scumbags. Excuse me if I am not that paranoid. Calling OS Republican Killa to deflect from Johnny's harsh words to you yesterday is pretty lame. No one believes it.

"Americans gave millions of dollars in the past year to veterans charities designed to help troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, but several of the groups spent relatively little money on the wounded,..."

This is from the Washington Post article (from a newshound link) discussing the the American Institute of Philanthropy you quoted earlier but left out the second time. Freedom Alliance was not designed to help wounded troops. I couldn't find Grassley's comments (I am not doubting they exist) or the report of Sec. of the Secretary of the State of Washington and quit looking after the CVC reference.

The balance sheet is laid out for all to see so why the big deal about not having the finances evaluated by BBB? I would promote other charities than Freedom Alliance but your Special Comment is lacking in its accusations.

I am going to gloss over Jeff's/Royal King's/Republican Killa's/Mr. Suck's/et al's typically worthless comments and simply note to Ashley and Sharon:

Ashley, I certainly do think the money that reaches the troop's families, in an absolute amount, as you go with, or in a relative sum, as do I, is needed and worthy. I appreciate that.

Sharon, I do not think that North and Hannity are lining their pockets, either. North, because of his (overturned on a technicality on appeal) conviction, gives me some pause, but even then the crime was more in the nature of jingoistic zealotry gone awry than personal misappropriation of funds.

Worst case for Hannity and North, they are being "unjustly enriched" by publicity being paid for by contributors. They're not the first and won't be the last, and they're in an industry that requires the rather ugly habit of tooting your own horn, loud and long.

My complaint, and forgive me if I wrote awkwardly, goes to what appears to be mismanagement of a charitable organization. I am confident neither of these men is a hands-on manager. I doubt either is capable of managing such an organization personally. It is a daunting task, requiring specialized knowledge and skill. The mission can be good, the motives pure and everyone can feel good about contributing. But, wouldn't it be better if we could also be assured than an extremely high level of funds collected were being received by those in need? That is the basic charitable standard, isn't it?

I would add, and I understand that North, in particular, is very good about this, for which he has my respect, actual hands-on contact with these men and women is an illuminating, inspiring, humbling and rewarding experience. I know time is a scarce commodity for all of us, and funds are absolutely required, but there are organizations that will put you in touch with military families in need - driving to hospitals, babysitting while spouses are at the treatment centers, arranging airfare, etc. All of that is so very important. One of my employees, a woman God has blessed with a sunny disposition and a wonderful spirit, assists the physical therapists (woefully far to few at the hospitals, the Administration having planned even more poorly for injuries than for the Occupation) a couple of hours each week, simply playing catch with rubber balls. Nothing elabaorate is required. No special skills. When the Invasion began and all through the Occupation, we were insulated from the need to sacrafice. It's as if the Adminstration feared if we were asked to do so, we would be opposed to the incursion. In fact, we were all told to shop. Of course, all we did was delay the sacrafice with a battered economy. But, we can take on that sacrafice, which is really a joy, by giving freely of our resources. Shouldn't we? Shoulddn't we make sure the troops and their families are not short-changed in the process?

Having been up to my chin in Watergate, even meeting with my Congressman about the issue,I'd love to read Rosen's book.Though the way he presents his research and his book in his NR interview makes me think it would be best to keep the salt shaker handy.

I remember the days of "Mad Dog Mitchell" (yes, that's what some people called him),the "Big Enchillada" (that's what Nixon called him). But one can't help but wonder about a writer who uses phrases portraying Mitchell as one "who stood for the Right Reason values of “law and order” against those of amnesty, acid, and abortion".
Could his years of voluminous research have led him to pre-ordained decisions which he desired to reach?

Well, we all know (in trouble, already, since the collective will be taken by some in an absolute sense) there are two (2) ways to research:

#1 Follow the trail and draw a conclusion when you reach the end.

#2 Draw a conclusion and selectively pick up support.

I have no idea how Rosen will do this, but I'll assume and hope #1 until I read the book. In trouble again since the prevailing wisdom seems to be reading will get you in trouble since it might challenge your preconceived notions. For some reading is a novel idea. And, we all have to admit that is a great pun.

OTM, it may appear to be mismanaged by your standards, but not by the standards of Charity Navigator, which gave the organization its highest rating. Scan the site and you will see a number of well-known organizations which rate fewer or even no stars. Greenpeace has three stars I believe, and as mentioned earlier, Stings Rainforest scam rates a zero.

Thanks, Ashley. I think you summed up our positions well, and the comparisons really don't matter do they? I will continue to give to those charities which put the highest possible amount of funds collected into the hands of the intended beneficiaries, and you will continue to give based upon a standard equally valid to you. We are both to be commended for our desire to help.

By the way, you are a skilled analyst and argue, in the classic, positive sense, ably and well.

Good afternoon, Cecelia.

Awfully warm here, today, with the oddest wind. I think we may have a storm nudging up against us. What a most welcome respite that would be.

Yes, dear, Sharon can make a fine argument, but we have all known that for such a long time. Ashley was new, at least to me, and I felt she ought to be specially praised.

Sorry that my argument didn't measure up to your exacting standards, but unless I put on a pair of jack boots and grabbed a cudgel, it wouldn't now, would it? Not that I don't appreciate your extreme, tip of the bird right-wingedness. It makes the rest of us appear moderate and mainsstream, for which I am most thankful.

Rocinante, indeed. My second favorite sub-genre of jazz. How ever did you know? The little bird with the wingtip exaggerated on the right come visit with you? Next time you're by, I know a lovely rocinante bar with a tart, citrusy white sangria and the most interesting tapas. The mushrooms in Madeira will make you weep! Bring yourself, but not your wallet. My wife and I will treat. No argument, please.

My father, grandfather, and great grandfather shared the name. It predates the birth of Margaret Mitchell, author of GWTW.

It was a modestly popular name for a boy until the early 80's because by that time, the Soap "Young and Restless" had a popular female character named Ashley and that started the trend. It became a far more popular name for girls than it ever was for a boy.

You'll find many female Ashley's today, but virtually none older than 35.

Nh has for a long time been saying that no money from Hannity's charity goes to the people it is supposed to go to. Looks like another NH lie has just bit the dust. Really, I don't know why you NH partisans who are here can in good conscience believe a word NH says. Everything they say is lies, lies and more lies.

Cecelia,

I have long been suspicious that there is some collusion and maybe some sockpuppetry going on among the lib regulars. But I can't prove it so i make no accusations.

We saw how libs (probably NH partisans) made an coordinated attempt to sabotage a poll. Why would they not make a concerted attempt to sabotage the site as well? According to Johnny, at least one lib regular has resorted to sock puppetry in the past. I don't know what would prevent him from doing it again.

But I guess it is Ok. Better that some libs come over here and at least get exposed to the truth; rather than this site become an echo chamber as NH now is.

Of course NH can never afford to open itself up to diverse opinions. NH propaganda can never stand if subjected to the rigors of free, civil and fair debate.

Divorce attorneys use to plant stories of filings there, Many a woman first learned her husband had filed by reading Maxine at breakfast. One even stabbed her husband with a egg yolk-encrusted fork.
