Regarding the Mathews article, please note the very first sentence:

As is my habit, I'm just watching Chris Matthews' Hardball. His first panel consisted of the regulars -- Andrea Mitchell, chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC News, and Chuck Todd, political director for NBC News .

So where is the conservative on that panel? He seems to have vanished. Maybe Eric can find him.

Eric
Last night's H&C, Just In and several other shows helped illustrate how blatantly Fox News is in the tank for conservatives, the religious right and the Republican Party.

Why did Fox consider it "News" and a major controversy that a well-known GOP partisan like James Dobson would go on his radio show and criticize Obama? How is this news? If liberal Christian preachers went on a rant about McCain, would Fox mention it in any regard, whatsoever?

Nope.

It's news because Fox is a mouthpiece for conservatives. If a conservative has something negative to say about Obama, it's not just news, it's MAJOR NEWS. Free interviews, stacked guest lists for days or week with people who agree with them, and leading headlines and subtitles.

Most people don't even know who James Dobson is, and most who do probably have an unfavorably opinion of him. But, of course, on Fox News, James Dobson is treated like a saint and if he has something negative to say about Obama, he has a free run of the channel.

This is a classic example of why the RNC, McCain and conservative 527 groups are complete idiots for paying Fox News to air their ads. Fox is an ad for the Republican Party. If Fox News, through stacking its guest list on a daily basis and giving Republicans two to three times as much air time as Democrats, through partisan Republican commentators and dishonest reports by Cameron, Angle and Garrett - if Fox News can't convince its viewer to vote Republican with all the effort it's put into helping Republicans, just what the hell is a 30 sec ad going to do?

Waste money, that's what.

Sometimes it is mind boggling to see how desperate Fox haters are to make their point. How they will say anything . . . no matter how silly or absurd . . . to attempt to put Fox in a bad light.

Eric is a good case in point. First, we had Eric's reporting that Carville and Begala have asserted that they are not happy because they are not invited to go on Fox News enough. Eric forgot that Carville and Begala are contractually bound to another network, and could not have made that assertion without looking like complete idiots.

He goes on and on about guest lists despite the fact that Dollar has refuted his claim that guest lists are unbalanced many times.

Now, we have Eric's asserting that Fox is obviously in the Republican's tank because it actually reported Dobson's criticisms of Obama. No one but conservatives, Eric argues, know anything about Dobson (or even care about him), sooo this must prove that Fox is a Republican mouthpiece.

I hate to burst Eric's bubble, but Dobson is all over the news . . . not just at Fox. Check out this link:

http://news.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn&q=dobson

Look at that . . . 870 articles on the Dobson story. All sorts of new organizations are carrying it, including CNN, ABC, Reuters, and the New York Times. The fact that Fox . . . gasp . . . actually carries the story does not prove a damn thing except that Fox News is doing its job.

Eric's post goes beyond ignorant, and I feel embarrassed for him.

BTW: Eric never did find the conservative on the Mtp panel. I am chagrined. Don't tell me that the panel for a non Fox show would actually only include liberals. I thought Eric told us that could not happen.

This is how the "party by the numbers" game plays out literally every single time.

1. Far-out brainwashed nutjob trolls in with "I'm watching X right now and they still don't have any liberals on!"

2. Some liberals come on the show, but said nutjob sticks to it because there were X number of "conservatives" on that particular show earlier.

3. The previous and next day(s) liberals outnumber conservatives on the same show.

IV. The individual show is dismissed and the whole network is condemned without proof.

E. Johnny pulls out the big guns and lists guest lists by the droves, completely invalidating any claim by said nutjob.

Danny,

How does Eric have time to compare the balance of Fox News with the balance of other shows when he does nothing but watch Fox News?

""We had a recording come out of the Obama headquarters -- not Obama, I'm sorry...Bin Laden, Bin Laden -- it came out of Bin Laden's headquarters over there in Pakistan..."

Quick, who said it? (Hint: It is not the person with the 90 consecutive month top spot)

This Just in, Eric.

Obama knows who Dobson is. This is what he said in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal.

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

In your world, if Dobson criticizes Obama, it is only to allow Fox News to solely cover it to demonstrate it's partisanship.

And if Eric was informed on why Dobson was in the news, he would understand why this is an important story.

Dobson claims he was just informed about that Obama speech in 2006 that mentions him and Reverand Al in the same sentence.

Dobson has made statements that he may not vote for McCain.

So...now that Dobson is upset with Obama's very liberal views of how Christians should behave in our democracy, it is news because he does have great influence in the evangelical community....Will he now endorce McCain? Will he remain his foe? What specificially about Obama's ideology makes DObson so upset, as a major leader in the evangelical community? Will the evangelical support Obama now has (and McCain lacks) be affected as time goes on and does Dobson have an influence with this? All intriguing political questions!

Also, if Eric had any information, the news also covered how both candidates have made overtures to meet with Dobson.

So, FOX NEWS H/C covered the story....but the other cablers were covering it as was the politcal blogs like kos, HuffPo and DRUDGE REPORT (in the headline in the AM BTW).

Live and learn, Eric.

Eric:

The Dobson story operates on a couple of different levels.

Your point about Dobson not being that well known may be somewhat weak. Indeed, if you polled Americans and asked if they knew who Dobson is, the vast majority would not know. Then, again, the vast majority of Americans do not know even three (3) justices on the Supreme Court. 25% don't know who the Vice-President is.

However, I do think we have to recognize Dobson's disproportionate but strong influence on a relatively small group of Americans and in limited geographic sections of our nation, both historically blindly Republican in political orientation and voting habits. That is why Dobson's comments are, in fact, newsworthy, and why the Obama anti-smear machine kicked into high gear, yesterday, and rather effectively. Already this morning, we are seeing some in the media casting Dobson's comments as petty and partisan.

We also have to recognize the fact that FNC was not the RNC coolie here. The ever shrill voices on "Morning Joe" were probably much louder. The only real loudmouth I saw at FNC was Hannity, and he hardly merits mention. The point I try to make here is that the coverage is more the relentless effort to be sensational than the result of partisan bias. Even then, it all sounded rather hollow, didn't it?

Moreover, we do have the political dimension, per se, and I expect we will see many more of these out-of-tune, poorly cooreographed arias. We are early in the season, but there is some growing sense that the McCain campaign, flat as the West Texas plain for some time now, is teetering on the edge of a deep and wide canyon. The real test for the media will be how judiciously it edits these little RNC-staged melodramas, and the test for us will be two-fold:

How willing we will be to stomach an RNC smear-a-thon.

How tolerant, or hopefully intolerant we will be of media outlets constantly going for cheap sensationalism in lieu of substance? I would say that if the screaming headlines become even more limited to the morning "got your attention, now" variety or the Doocy/Hannity/Beck shrill vituperative, we will have done our jobs as news consumers very well.

Lastly, let's not overlook the fact that evangelical America is changing before our very eyes. Those same people who once, not so long ago, saw American belligerency in the world as a great crusade (the "Kill a Commie for Christ" sort) and who believed environmentalism and feminism to be the greatest of sins, are moving toward embracing peace as an element in the Great Commission, in seeing our protection of the environment as an act of stewardship, and embracing the fullness of mankind in creating the appropriate image of God we can all embrace. As first a Christian, then an American and lastly a Democrat, this is a welcome, long-overdue and gratifying movement. And, one which caught me completley by surprise. So, Dobson's influence and all the other Dobsons' in the world seems to be waning as Christians of all sorts begin to exercise the sacrament of choice fully. I will add, I think most of the media is well behind the recognition of this. Maybe, the media needs our help.

It would be lovely if we could determine the truth of the infamous ketchup/train story. I understand Olbermann to have said he didn't take the train and never intended to take the train, and that he didn't consume anything at the Kennedy Center, except for Starbuck's, in which he seldom puts ketchup. I suppose he wins on wit, but given Olbermann's sullied reputation for veracity and the general reputation of the Post, Page Six and Froelich, which, amazingly, may even be worse, who knows? Given the use of "source" or "sources" (3 times), "insider" (2 times), "witness," all without attribution, and the strained use of the passive voice ("We're told ...." and " ... was heard ...."), I'd say it is likely we've all been treated to another piece of Froelich's rather clumsy fiction. At least, the story is amusing, even if not intentionally so.

Keith's diversionary tactic is a hoot, and the gullible fall for it. When he couldn't get 1st class tickets, he went to DC by car. The NY Post article even says so! But Olby makes a crack about how he didn't even go by train, as if that proves the article a "lie", as the credulous put it. In fact, his story corroborates the article's statement that he ended up having someone drive him to DC.

So the liar is not Fox/NYP, it's Keith and those who repeat his sleazy fictions.

Oh, dear, HaggisFarmer, we made somewhat similiar, roughly equivalent, not quite the same, in the same general vein points a mere three (3) minutes apart, a point of view, I might add, so extraordinary, so out of the mainstream, so unique, so devious, that surely only one (1) person in the entire world could possibly hold it. We'll have some of our bretheren and sistern all a twitter in no time, tongues will be wagging and fingers pointing, at me and you, at you, at me, at us, individually and corporatelly, as this will be conclusive proof that you and I are one and the same, indistinguishable, being of the same substance with one another. Dare we hope that if NVH and Eric hold such views, generally speaking, they keep silent? I know I have now made it all the worse, because I am responding to you, which is responding to myself and you to me and me to you and us to one another. This will be very bad, indeed.

Words to Watch??

Last night on AC 360,Tony Perkins was part of a panel discussion on Obama's 2006 speech. He used the term "Orthodox Christian" FIVE times in the course of a short discussion. Is this a new "words that work" ala Luntz attempt to rebrand, and discard the term fundamentalist? I've never heard this term used in this way before.

Fox and Friends:

When I was a child the local weather forecast was delivered by a man wearing a Texaco uniform.I thought it was odd to see Hooter's commercials at 7AM,but this morning on F&F they had a young women in a Hooter's get-up reading some of the news. How far the mighty have fallen.

Concerning "The View" featuring 5 "Liberals" and one "Conservative".Does this mean that in the prevailing world view of the far right, that which is not "Conservative" is "Liberal"?Is there no such thing as a moderate.Time was when height, weight, shoe size and political attitudes fell out in a bell curve, with the majority in the middle.

And speaking of bell curves. From the late great George Carlin:

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

I noticed that distinction as well, Johnny, and it doesn't do much to bolster either Olbermann's analytical abilities or his credibility or both. I suppose we can make the assumption he might have (been) driven to the District because of the train accomodations. I also suppose there could have been other reasons, perhaps a ride offer coming up at the last minute.

That leaves the great ketchup conundrum unresolved, of course.

I think we have to just take this for the pure enjoyment. The unsoucred/thinly sourced article in a mere gossip column scarcely matters. When do gossip columnists ever really source?

And Olbermann, well Olbermann!

Great fun.

Perkins and Sharpton, right?

The "orthodox Christian" term was noticeable as theologically this is usually used to refer to the Eastern Church, the Greek Orthodox, the Russian Orthodox, etc. I didn't really understand the reson for this rather novel, and somewhat inappropriate term. After all, we generally understand fundamentalists to be Protestants, and protest is rather the opposite of orthodox. You raise an interesting point. Perhaps, through misuse and overuse "fundamentalist" and even "evangelical" may have become loaded terms. That is a shame as they are both such important terms. Particularly, "evangelical" has a very warm spot in my heart, and I have recoiled as some have laid claim to the term and the media has used it so unartfully.

Did you notice how skillfully Sharpton took over the interview and ended it on the note he desired, even as Cooper gave Perkins the last word? It was an amazing rhetorical skill to behold (and I'm no particular fan of Sharpton).

I saw a recent poll saying that the majority of Americans not only believe in God, but they also believe in angels and demons.

A great many of those believers do not fall under the evangelical or fundamentalist label.

I wonder how many of the believing general public, would agree with Obama that the Sermon on the Mount can be seen as underpinning marriage as it relates to gay civil unions and that championing anti-abortion laws through the democratic process, because of reasoning based traditional Judeo-Christian principles, is tantamount to establishing Levitical law

Even in our pluralistic society, that's a stand that counters western history and tradition... (not to mention Obama's expressed scriptural interpretations that counter both protestant and Catholic teaching.)

I'd venture that Dobson is on pretty safe ground as pertains to theology, legal tradition, AND majority sentiment...

Perhaps Barack should stick to pithy expreessions such as "Change" and "Yes, we can"....

OTM,

So you finally have dropped your sugary, overly courteous front now have you? Gone now is your almost tearful maudlin protestations of well, I am going to respect you; even of you don't respect me.

In point of fact you have proven yourself to be an extremely dishonorable, duplicitous person. To borrow your language: This is what we have established beyond all doubt:

How far that evident duplicity runs, I have no idea. Does it extend to your manufacturing a number of sock puppets here? I don't know. Does it extend you your having a relationship with Ellen Brodsky and that you in cooperation with others dogponders have an agenda (to use an Ellen word) here? I don't know that either. At this point I would not put anything past you.

I have told you what you need to do in order to gain back any entitlement to respect. It is the same thing that I would require of any editor or any poster or any acquaintance. Go back to the place than you made the slander recant it. That might take courage on your part which you may not have, but it is not an unreasonable request. It is something that any honorable person would do.

Or if you won't do the above, then at least come to this site and call Johnny a Stalinist and be ready to back it up. In any case, end the duplicity. Don't say one thing one place and another thing at another place. Be a man or a woman or whatever you are. Don't be many people.

BTW: That publicity thing you talked about works both ways. I would not have known anything about the Dollar site were it not for NH posters talking about this site. Once I realized that NH truly is Stalinist . . . and no that is not something entirely different that what I have said to them . . . and that I could not express my opinions there without being flamed and moderated unfairly . . . I decided to post here where I could free to say what I thought.

Now you say that I am part of a cabal. Does that mean that I have joined your "infamous gang of four" (or five or whatever it is)? Gawd I hop so. That has long been my ambition.

Sorry if someone already mentioned this; I glanced over the 65 posts, and it was just two guys going at it, as usual.

Anyway, I wanted to "opine" about the lauding of Russert/trashing of O'Reilly by Knute Berger. While others are mentioned as not being good listeners, only O'Reilly makes it to the minor title (or whatever it's called). That sucks.

But look at this quote from Mr. Berger: "Maybe I'm setting the bar too low in these days of Katie Couric, who calibrates her interviews to the level of Special Olympics participants."

YES!!!!! I found a "gotcha" quote! How DARE this guy make a pejorative out of Special Olympics participants!

I of course would never care about calling out someone on such a quote, but from what this guy wrote about O'Reilly, Imus, et al, he would be the first to do so. So let's just hope SOMEONE picks up on his misstatement.

OTM I actually agree with you. That was pretty funny.

First, it was funny that Factless Haggis who said it. She who runs away and hides whenever you ask her for facts to back up her extreme assertions.

Secondly, since my post was based on unassailable facts, HF was actually supporting the credibility of Fox News. Not only was that the opposite of what she intended (I daresay), she did not even realize what she was doing.

--- Does that mean that I have joined your "infamous gang of four" (or five or whatever it is)? Gawd I hop so. That has long been my ambition.

As I read your original post, it seems that Johnny is a part of your "infamous gang." I realize it's a little muddled, but I get the impression that you are doubting the height of Johnny's IQ. Next time you debate Johnny about something, we will see how that goes.

Now all you need to do is to call Johnny a Stalinist here and you will be on your way to being less duplicitous. Now that isn't so hard, is it?

No, Johnny is and has never been a gang member. He rises well above that group.

As for being a Stalinist, I have explained that repeatedly, and I viewed Johnny's actions in concert with the unfortunate Cox as a harsh, brutal, power play. I don't recall the quote, but I am sure Cecelia will be glad to repost for --- how many dozen times? I think I referenced a Stalinistic purge, didn't I? Not the same thing as equating someone with Stalin. I certainly share Stalin's fondness for Georgian wine. That makes me a bit Stalinistic, doesn't it? Perhaps that's too fine a line, and for that I would certainly apologize. I don't think Johnny is Stalin or Stalin-like, although I frequently disagree with him. I have always had the impression he is big enough to deal with that. I don't recall him whining about it endlessly.

Any chance we can end this ridiculous argument now and devote some attention to the topic at hand? I don't really care whether you like or respect me, but let's try to respect this site.

HF,

Strange you would say that, since I don't have a TV and rarely watch TV. It has been a long time since I have seen an O'Reilly show. The only time I get to see O'Reilly are on clips that I find on the internet. If I were truly addicted to O'Reilly, I would likely get cable and fulfill my addiction.

Since you are having such a hard time following me, maybe you should change your temperament and apply for membership in the gang of four or five or whatever. I am told their IQ is beneath mine.

Really, I think you may projecting. The brainless, factless nonsense that you spout plus your tendency to demean and ridicule rather than debate are probably signs of your addiction to some fanatical liberal group . . . probably Newshounds. Just break your addiction and you will likely be a lot smarter.

OTM,

Since you have forgotten, here is the quote.

I think he's really hit a nerve, and hsi detractors are feeling some heat. Has anyone taken a look at Olbermann Watch lately? A complete purge. If you criticize FOX or agree with Olbermann, you're gone. Stalinistic group is Cox, Dollar and the infamous gang of four over there.
On The Mark | 02.08.08 - 3:13 pm | #

As you can see you did say that Dollar was a part of the Stalinistic group. I guess you could argue that you indicated Dollar is different from the gang of four who are also a part of the Stalinistic group.

The best way to end the argument is for you to go to the site and recant what you said (at least about Dollar) That would end the argument as far as I am concerned.

You still refuse to accept the fact that at the time I wrote the piece, I believed it to be true. What happened at OW was, in fact, to be an ideological purge involving some of the same sort who do not tolerate and departure from their own views, for any reason. To whatever extent Johnny was involved, I believe him to have been wrong and to have acted harshly. Since I began visiting this site on a regular basis, my view of Johnny has improved considerably. He has faults and foibles as we all do, except of course Cecelia and Jeff/Royal King/Mr. Sucks. I still often disagree with Johnny. But, this Johnny at this site is one I always respect. That doesn't change what I believe happened at OW. I will add, having a keener knowledge of Johnny's work and having met him in a far less negative venue, I have to wonder how much he was interested in quashing dissent. Very little, I now suspect. If that is sufficient, well and good. If not, well and good, also. I'm done with the topic.
If you're not, I know someone who has enough baggage to lend you some.

OtM, if you want to keep making charges about OlbyWatch, you should take them there and address them to the site manager. It is especially infuriating that you do it here, where he doesn't see it, and that your claim of an "ideological purge" is simply a bald-faced lie. I happen to know for a fact that of all the registrations received for commenters at OW, not one has been turned down for ideological reasons. In fact, not one has been turned down, period. There are to this day vigorous exchanges of opposite points of view there, minus the once-traditional sock puppets, crass vulgarities, and fictitious persona.

I wholeheartedly support what was done at OW to keep the spam and revolting vulgarisms off the site. For you to call it some sort of ideological purge is both ignorant and dishonest. Particularly given your own history of creating multiple identities and fomenting pretend debates between them in order to bog the site down in profanity and subject matter other than that of Olbermann.

So I don't want to hear any more from you about Olbermann Watch or purges. Your own hands at that site are anything but clean, and you know what I am talking about. Please get off the subject.

Danny,

When Mark was trolling OW, he routinely questioned Johnny's honesty and many times, in full fey vapors, proclaimed him not worth reading and unworthy of any exchange whatsoever. Back then Johnny was the bad guy and Bob Cox, the blog owner, was the reasonable one.

In a pretense of equanimity, Mark also told Bob Cox that he (Mark) understood that OW would not survive if it continued without such gate-keeping.

I'm sure Mark is grateful to Johnny for his tolerance. But mostly Johnny is merely what every person who Mark chooses to compliment at any given time-- merely a tool to contrast with the person he is currently wishing to insult or needle.

I really don't know why any network or newspaper should apologize on the air or in print for a mistake that they may have made on the air or in print. If there is one thing we have learned, it is not necessary to apologize where you made the misstatement. All that should be necessary is to call whoever it was on the phone (or maybe you could announce your apology in a meeting you were both attending). But no one should ever make an apology where they made the mistake.

To expect that out of anyone or any entity . . . well you are just causing trouble and you ought to move on.

It is good that they don't give out the map now that Obama opened up his HUGE lead (a little questionable but we'll go with it) because that might scare conservatives into action. And people like Eric (who is willing to jump at anything) would claim that Fox is doing the (R)'s work,

They do the most utterly ghastly things with them. Sticky, syrupy, custardy." I tended to agree with that.

Oh I don't know. I suspect that your social sphere is representative of a certain social group. Many like unto your social group (I daresay)can be found lurking around the NH site. I have noticed that you lurk there yourself every now and then, and you certainly don't stand out as being one who is not of a like mind.

People who are in your social group (generally speaking) do not seem to value difference of opinion. They also seem to confuse ridicule and name calling with serious debate.

That's why people's actually having a civil debate with little or no name calling (yeah people raise their voices and are passionate about what they believe, but you can do that and still be civil) really confuses the people of your social sphere. Ellen Brodsky is really confused, because the only way that you can say that the debate is not fair is to argue that Hannity is a brilliant debater while Colmes is a blithering idiot. Humorously, in her articles, Ellen Brodsky seem to indicate the opposite . . . that Hannity is an buffoon and an idiot while Colmes is brilliant. So she completely undercuts her case that H&C is not fair to liberals, without realizing it. I mean if she is right the show is unfair to conservatives and Fox, to be fair, needs to get a smarter, more eloquent guy to stand up to Colmes.

Like I say, it is all of that honest debate and difference of opinion that has Ellen confused. Her little Stalinist mind can't deal with it.

Many of those in your social group, I have noticed, confuse indoctrination with knowledge. That is why many in your social sphere think that they have great knowledge and wisdom . . . when actually they are woefully ignorant, and they cannot participate effectively in a civil and fair debate. They think they are wise and sophisticated . . . when all it is, they are indoctrinated.

Carville has repeatedly said that he'll come on Fox whenever invited. He said as much in a debate with Bill O'Reilly. I never said they were "pining" to come on Fox. I said they would never turn down such an invitation. They have appeared once, to my recollection, on the O'Reilly Factor. The discussion at hand was Fox News' bias towards the Republican Party. So not surprisingly, I haven't seen them on since. Your claim that they aren't "allowed" on per their contract is ridiculous. A contract with CNN would simply prevent them from being hired as full time contributors. It would not prevent them from occassional interviews and debates.

OK, I've told Eric before about his counting the guests obsession. You'll notice he wasn't here yesterday when Dick Durbin was on with Laura for two segments, or later when Nancy Pelosi was on with Greta for two segments. But tonight looks like more fertile ground so he's back with the counting of noses.

These threads are for comments on cable news. Making lists of guests, unless they encompass weeks and weeks of data that cover a wide range of hours, is a pointless exercise in anecdotal propagandizing. I'll say this just one more time. We're not going to clog up these threads with counting of the guests, because the only meaningful count would require a huge amount of data. You want to count guests? Start your own blog.

As for the H&C map, I THOUGHT they did something on it last week; I seem to recall hearing that BHO was way ahead in electoral votes because a couple of more states swung his way.. It was my understanding that the map segment would be updated when there were changes to be announced.

Eric,

I listened to your clip of Carville and he didn't say anything like what you think he said. In fact, he encouraged democratic candidates not to go on Fox. When asked if he go on Fox, he said yeah sure (provided that he was not a candidate).
If he were promoting a book or something I am sure he would go on Fox. That does not mean he would be ready and willing and able to go on Fox tomorrow.

You think it is ridiculous to say that people who are contractually bound to one networks don't face some barriers to going on rival networks?

Oh yeah networks love for that to happen.
That's why they pay their pool of commentators those nice salaries . . . so they they can do commentary on other networks. You are the one who is being ridiculous.

Case in point: You used to see Tony Snow around Fox a lot. Now you hardly see him at all. The reason? He got a contract to do commentary for a rival network.

I really don't have anything to add to that. Dollar has already pwned you or balance, so I don't think I need say any more. On that subject, I defer to Dollar.

Of course, if Ellen is right about the comparative skill of the two major debaters, Hannity may need all the help he can get just to make it fair. Otherwise, and I am basing this on Ellen Brodsky's analyses, the show obviously tilts too far to the left.

Well, if you're right, then they should be talking about it soon. Considering Rasmussen shows Obama opening a more firm lead in Pennsylvania, NH, NM and California and McCain opening a larger lead in FL.

H&C's decision to list California originally as only "lean dem" was completely idiotic.

Especially since McCain's call for off-shore drilling now has him down 28 points in California. Bush only lost by about 9, if I recall. That's a clear defeat, but it's certainly not a "landslide". It's simply a respectable loss. From a 9 point deficit to a 28 point deficit is a pretty massive shift, considering how large California's population is.

No,the story is true.I'm only saying that, since the EPA declared the Hudson a Superfund site in 1983,and Mr O'Reilly is bringing it up NOW,his motive is probably not PCB's,or he'd have been talking about it for the past 25 years.Do you have evidence that he has.

If he has not been regularly raising the issue before this little spat with NBC and KO,then it looks to me as if his motivation is to "disparage?","cast doubt on?","make GE look bad",and not to address the pollution.

Johnny, I'm curious, do you agree with Fox News' decision to dishonestly label Amanda Carpenter as quote an "internet expert".

I love how liberals on Fox would never get such a neutral designation. Why can't Fox state flatly that Amanda Carpenter and MKH are Republicans/conservatives?

"Political reporter from townhall.com".

That's pretty dishonest. Townhall is basically a blog. She's a conservative blogger. She's not a reporter.

This is the exact kind of thing that Brent Bozell over at the MRC routinely claims about. When CNN supposedly brings on someone who is a liberal but isn't identified as such. Well, why don't conservatives apply the same standard to their own?

I like how the Fox News channel sets up its subtitles as though they are fact:

"Karl Rove reveals problems with Obama's 50 state strategy".

No question mark. It's not suggestive. No, it's a fact. Karl Rove IS revealing Obama's problem. If Bob Beckel were talking, there would be no subtitle stating frankly, "Beckel explains while McCain can't win... blah blah blah".

I like how Fox works so closely with Rove that they set up his charts for him on the screen. Doubt a Democratic strategist would get the same treatment if they wanted to put the state-by-state polls showing Obama ahead in Iowa, CO, NM, PA, NH, etc...

300 million.

And Fox has a daily audience of what? 1 to 2 1/2 million?

Less than 1% of the population? And all of a sudden Fox News therefore must appeal to America? LoL. Yeah right.

Fox New's audience is overwhelmingly Republican and therefore irrelevant. If most Americans took Fox News serious than Obama would be losing to McCain in the polls by 30 points, because Fox's coverage of Obama has been hysterically negative.

First of all, it was the demo pollster who picked the poll.

Secondly, to say that it was done by University of Maryland does not tell me much. Was this done by a bunch of students in an undergraduate class? How big was the sample? What sampling techniques did they use? Is the poll written up in a peer reviewed journal? Where do I find that?

It is certain that the poll was not done by professionals who specialize in that kind of research. Also it appears that whoever did the poll already had their minds made up about such things as whether Iraq had anything to do with al qaeda, and the subject was not even debatable to those doing the poll. That is very suspicious. Does not show objectivity.

I would rather trust a poll done by professional research specialist. I know Neilsen has some data that is applicable. Show me that.

> 88% of Fox's audience was Republican.

Another lie. The "study" (not a survey) done by liberal strategist Mehlman is not only multiple years old, it also is done with an unheard-of firm that doesn't even do political polling. The methodology (which involves manipulation of Nielsen rating data) has never been made public. The only "finding" from the survey was the one Mehlman put out himself, in arguing for the failed "boycott" of Fox.

In other words, this is no evidence at all, the sort of garbage Fox haters spew and repeat on call.

Compare that with the PEJ survey, recognized by the industry as the definitive study of the media, conducted each year by professional pollsters with the methodology and results all made public every year. As the results I quoted above show, Fox's audience is roughly 1/3 Democrats. Add in the independents and Fox's audience is mostly not Republicans at all.

That's a real survey, up to date and verified.

Monor point, but the above cited poll said that 88% of Fox viewers supported Bush in 2004, not that they were Republicns.

It could say 88% of "Fox viewers" (regular, occasional, once a month, 8 hours a day? Just that claim alone shows the unprofessional nature of this pseudo-"poll") eat squash. It wouldn't mean a damn thing, because it's not a scientific poll, the people who did it have no credentials, the only public release of information was from partisan operative Mehlman trying to justify a boycott of Fox. And even this dubious data is now nearly five years out of date.

There is no question that the PEJ survey is the gold standard in media analysis. Anyone who would cite Mehlman's bogus "findings" is simply spreading hack talking points.

NVH,

Without good methodology the poll is worthless. That minor point really doesn't matter.

FF

No embarrassment because they used such a phony poll. No thank you for providing accurate information. None of this coming from Fox Haters.

How strange.

Yeah Eric said that 88% of the audience was Republican . . . not supporters of Bush.

I know the bogus poll did not even say that, but Eric did.

So we can expect to hear nothing from the "Program on International Policy Attitudes",the "University of Maryland"or "Knowledge Networks".What are your qualifications to deride the methodology of this survey?I'm not saying you're wrong, just wondering how much salt I need to take with your opinion.

Yes,it was not a poll in the traditional sense, but specifically what grounds do you object to the way the study was formulated.

Please try to pay attention. Your UofMaryland poll is not the bogus "survey" cited by Eric. That bogus survey was about audience levels of Fox being 88% Republican, or 88% Bush voters. Your poll is about a completely different, and I might add wholly irrelevant, subject. So please don't clog up these threads with irrelevancies. They are clogged up enough already and I'm seriously thinking of installing a limit on comments per person over a given time period.

I apologize.Mr Mehlamn had cited the U of Md poll about misconceptions of media viewers about the Iraq War,and that poll stands.I did not read carefully enough to see that Mr Mehlman was citing two different polls.

Mea culpa.

Thanks, HaggisFarmer. We all need to be reminded that cable news is a rarified environment with few inhabitants. We tend to lose that perspective.
