When I woke up (during the 0500 Hours US CDST block), I flipped on FNC but it seemed like Ingraham was on (perhaps, a rebroadcast of BOR?). I wanted live news and not just a crawl, so I went to MSNBC. Usual weekend staffing, fairly good, but the "Morning Joe" crew was on at 0600 Hours. Great, great coverage, with lots of Chuck. I did go over to (the weekend) F&F, just a couple of times, but both times one of the dark-haired guys on the show was voicing over one of the "What Biden Said About Obama" McCain commercials*. So, back to MSNBC and some real news .... Doing very well. Stiff competition for the fair and balanced ones.

So glad to be back at home in time for the big story!

*And, now, before the wailing starts, I am not saying this was representative, just that the few moments I went over, that was happening.

I can assure you if anyone takes political commercials, or indeed product commercials, as the facts, he or she ought to be a character in a Thornton Wilder novel.

Speaking of facts, the story was the selection of a vice-presidential candidate, not the latest negative ad of the other campaign. I can assure you, if McCain nominates Romney on Friday and FNC or MSNBC are showing the (certain to come) Obama ad about all the horrible things Romney said about McCain and McCain said about Romney, I'll be shouting "inappropriate" every bit as loudly. But, please, avoid any discussion of cable news at all costs, Jeff.

Joe Biden is an excellent choice...There unstoppable.

Watched a bit of Cavuto this afternoon(UK time)...He just sounded silly going on & on & on about what size/value of the Biden house was...How come Cavuto insisted on telling his views...The house the helicopter was focusing in on was actually his mothers house and Joe's house was even bigger behind some trees...This was of course totally wrong...His mothers house was at the main entrance and the house Cavuto was talking about was actually Joe Bidens...Was this deliberate?...Or just another FNC mistake?

I think he'll announce 1st thing in the morning.

Geez! Take a chill pill, Johnny. I'm not implying that at all. I've hopped all over the dial (that's an anachronism) and I have seen the ad all about. BTW: It's surprisingly, shoddily done ad. I just saw it on MSNBC. Does the material below help?

Please check the tivo....She said..."it sounded like he was lying"...Something like that...remember a couple of beers had been drunk the night before...So that may not be her exact quote...But it was something like that...I think it happened within the 1st hour....But they did start early.

Uh huh. While you're looking you're also going to have to come up with an explanation for how she could have suggested he was lying, when they were reporting all morning that Biden wasn't told until late last night.

Get that? So the question is, what kind of lying accusation could it be when they made clear he didn't get the phone call until last night?

You're going to have to explain that away too. Unless I get tired of waiting. Then you won't have to.

Nothing "low" about it. No leading question. No "trying to turn it into lying".

Reading it isn't enough. understanding it helps too.

If someone is "trying to turn it into lying", this is how it's done:

He's lying.
He's lying, isn't he?
So was he lying, or what?
He wasn't telling the truth.

When someone asks a totally neutral question, giving the two most benign and innocent constructions possible (he was throwing us off the track, or he hadn't been told yet), that is not by any stretch "trying to turn it into lying".

>I can see why Haggis would have said that

Revealing Observation:

I was channel surfing a little while ago and watched an outstanding, fair and balanced interview on FNC of Democratic Pollster Doug Schoen conducted by Greg P. (if I'm wrong about the name of the FNC anchor, please forgive me). Excellent unbiased questions and honest answers about the Biden pick.

I switched to MSNBC and caught a portion of Chris Matthews interview with Crysal Benton. What a stark difference between the two interviews on the two cable news networks.

Just one of the argumentative, accusatory, gotcha questions from one of MSNBC's Place for Politics upside-down American flag election anchors, Chris Matthews:

"Is that the best you got?"

Need I say more?

On a more relevant note, why does FNC show the news hours that eminated from Studio E ("America's Election HQ") in HD on FOXNews.com, but in SD on TV? I don't get it. The only shows in HD on-air and online are "Fox and Friends" and the "Fox Report." If you can show other Studio E shows in HD online, why can't you do it for TV?

Personal analysis of MSNBC bias:

There is no longer any pretense that MSNBC is unbiased in its political reporting. Their bias is undeniable and so obvious a blind, deaf cave man could detect it.

The print media has increased coverage of MSNBC's bias and its possible detrimental effect on the reputation of NBC News. Responses to questions asked of NBC News and MSNBC management no longer contain the "no, not really, we're OK, we know how to seperate comment from news coverage, it's really not a problem."

Recent trial baloons floated by the Peacock Channel and its Cable Peachick are:

1.) It is an economic decision to try to increase viewership by using the FNC formula of appealing to a politically biaseded audience and MSNBC's slanting the reporting slightly to one side, in their case, the left to target an audience, boosted by the election season and Olympics ratings.

2.) It is an attempt by MSNBC to balance the biased reporting on FNC in this crucial election season. The fate of the country hangs in the balance of this election and it's too important to allow Fox News to influence the outcome by distorting the facts. Short version-the ends justify the means.

3.) Yeah, you're right. So, what are you going to do about it?

Why would I do anything about it, you like Fox I like MSNBC/NBC/CNN, and I really like Fox on the weekends, but For Fox besides Hannity/Colmes, you have three newspeople with an agenda and that is Carlson, Doocy and Oreilly and as of lately Carl Cameron, and yes Msnbc has Olberman and to a extent matthews, but Nbc does not and will never use the monicker Fair and Balanced because of Olberman they cannot do that, and is it so hard for some of us to hear the two on F&F say that, when you know they have their finger crossed under the table.

I am certain we don't need another pro-FOX nor anti-FOX website, and we don't need anymore hate sites directed at a given cable news personality. We have plenty of all of those, and if they stay on their mission, they tend to be as boring as American cheese. However, a website unaffiliated and unowing to an network or network executive or personality, about the whole of cable news, which allowed wide-ranging, free commentary would be welcome, and I suspect would do very well indeed.

I see that TVNewser has an item about the recent NY Times article about advertisors and the Cable News Nets. Besides mentioning the very recent Pew study which shows FNC has the most balanced audience, it also offers a few interesting points:

- Advertisers feel the partisanship of the programming matters less than the ratings the shows can generate

- In 2007, Fox News raised more advertising revenue than CNNHLN combined

- Fox = $460 million

- CNN/HLN = $434 million

- MSNBC = $137 million.

(As many of us would come to expect, MSNBC is in a far-distant last place)

I would keep an open-mind, David, but if this just proved to be another trashily-written bash site, bashing of FOX, MSNBC, Hannity, Olbermann, any network or any personality, it would be redundant, superfluous, wouldn't it? I will acknowledge the name is not promising. I guess my guidelines would be:

Any network could be praised or criticized.

Any personality could be praised or criticized.

Any poster could be praised or criticized, but personal attacks would not be permitted. Immediate explusion for a period of 1 year for first violation, permanent suspension for second.

The focus would be cable news, but there would be a recognition that topics would necessarily include items on which cable news reports. Therefore, in an election year, politics, short of campaign talking points and other campaign PR releases would be permitted and encouraged.

Topics would not be arbitrarily ended simply because they have flowed over onto protected subject matter, programs or personalities. Indeed, no protected subject matter, programs or personalities would be allowed.

Glib posts by ignorant trolls would not be allowed. Immediate expulsion without possibility of return.

Regular posters, who are at least semi-literate, articulate and interesting* would be offered an opportunity to post extended pieces from time.

Wit and humor would be encouraged.

I envision this an Algonquin Round Table** for cable news.

---

*Examples (by enumeration and not limitation) would be Ashley, Cecelia, Fox Fan, Haggis, Mike, Sharon, vstol, you, David and, of course, Johnny. Excluded posters would include anyone who ever used his or her horse's name as an on-line moniker.

**If you have to go to Wikipedia to find out what this is, please go to another site.

We're just having a bit of fun, Cecelia. No need to get snide.

If you're going to turn the conversation to negativity at least direct it against our week-long troll, Patrick.

Well, FF, be glad the vaccum cleaner cord is not a reciprocal pet peeve, then Ceceilia would say, "You two really suck." And, the tie, well I won't even go there.

I'm sorry to report that our not house broken puppy has found a new home at the pound and appears to be quite comfy and fitting in rather nicely. He does speak highly of all the friends he made here.

Sigh.........

FF,

That joke about obsessiveness was so obvious, I'm surprised that Patrick didn't say it first.

Cecelia, go put on your tap-dancing shoes. ---PAUSE--- I'm off to the airport in a few moments, bound for Denver, and this is probably my last post until next week. If I get a chance and a computer, I may give you some updates, but TTFN.

I guess that means he trashed us. (sarcastic): Shocker.
Bret took a spill, but it was minor and quickly forgotten about. Now I know why when tossing to break around 1:00, he said he was going to stay seated because he didn't want to fall down. That was a fun tour, though, of the convention HQ, including a cameo by Steve Doocy.   I think I also saw Brian Wilson hard at work.

I thought so too. And then I remembered, last Saturday Brian said he'd be back this Saturday. But he wasn't. Bret was.

Oh, I'm sure you'll be popping up here under one name and biography or another, Mark...

This is unacceptable behavior by some of those in that crowd. Full stop.

Reporters, as we know, wade into marches all the time and ask questions of those in the demonstration.

For anyone to excuse this or to assign blame to the reporter for being "provocative" is, most likely, defending thuggish behavior because they don't like the political views or association of the reporter.

Politics trumps everthing for ideologues.

Whether the reporter is on the left or right and whether the march is for a liberal or conservative cause, to push around a reporter doing his or her job is simply unacceptable.

Wow! Ed Rendell, the Governor of Pennsylvania proclaimed today that
MSNBC is "the official network of the Obama campaign."

What took him so long to figure that one out?
