The weekend poll is longer than I have done before: 8 possible answers. The 'vote' button should appear just fine on all browsers, but should it not be visible on your setup let me know and I give the poll more space to make sure it's visible.

For those who didn't see the distinction at first, it is Tim Russert's weekend program, the one shown exclusively on MSNBC, that is being replaced by crime documentaries, etc.
But what an idiotic move! The best thing they could put in that place would be Tim's previous shows! I rarely watched them, but would sure do so now with him being gone. The shows that I did see were not typically time-sensitive, so if he did an interview with someone months or years ago, it wouldn't necessarily be obsolete.
Meaning no disrespect here, Tim is now more popular than ever. We all just thought he'd always be here. But now that he's gone, I believe any of his prgramming would be "must see TV" to many of news fans.

Huckabee's smart TV route
"I am getting credit in some circles for prescience in having written all along that Huckabee, in running for president, was mostly auditioning for a show on Fox or MSNBC."
What an interesting take, using a presidential campaign to break into cable punditry. It certainly takes less time than a legislative or military career, and it's safer than getting indicted (one can't always rely on overturned convictions or Presidential pardons). So will this career path join the long established routes from the Pentagon to defence contractors or from Congress to K Street?
"He can spend these next few months drawing a check from Fox to prop up McCain and pick apart Barack Obama, earning good Republican will along the way."
"What's apparently happening at Fox is that 20-something producers and copy writers, wet behind the ears and full of themselves with the heady insensitivity of their underdeveloped conservatism, have been getting outrageous things on the air because no adult journalist has been present. Brit Hume doesn't count."
J$,interesting that you should post this.If I had written the above, your regulars (and you) would have enough cows to repopulate the Chisholm Trail.
Carry on.

My guess is that the poll is askew because the Olbermannicphobes don't ever read anything. We have abundant evidence of that, all the time. They just see the name on an Olbermannicphobic site and assume that the question is: "Who would look best in violet taffeta carrying a basket of kittens?," or "Which of the following is most likely to be spotted coming out of a tanning salon?," or some other silly, denigrating question characterisitc of the Olbermannicphobic sites they frequent to share their mania. They check Olbermann out of rote training.

Concerning the poll.Newshounds has a regular feature called "Moronic Quote of the Week" or something like that. One week a quote from Neil Borscht was in the running, and he used his radio show to encourage his listeners go to Newshounds and skew the poll. Now why anyone would want to win such a contest is beyond me,but apparently Mr Borscht feels that any recognition is good.
For the record,I didn't vote.Wouldn't want to skew your results,I know I'm not representitive. But if I could write in a vote,it would be for "Nova".

So you agree with KO's assesment that BOR's recognition/opposition did much to make KO's show what it is today. Then do you also think that NY Post/Page 6 is also serving the part of a foil for KO,and untimately benefiting him by continuing this "Dick-Measuring contest" between News-Corp and GE.

No, I can see where each hit to this site comes from, and how many there are. Obviously I also know how many votes get cast in the poll over the same time period. So it's easy to compare the number of people who visit the site with the number of votes in the poll over the same time period. It ain't exactly rocket science. And those who are familiar with this particular NH commenter know the character of her crusade against both Fox and me.
And don't start with the attacks when I was just responding to a question you asked. If you don't like the answer that's no reason to get personal.

When one is having a conversation,a back and forth as it were, soemtimes a phrase will refer back to a statement that someone previously made.If the context was not clear, then reading what J$ wrote, that I was responding to,would have cleared that up.

J$ phrase was about Olbermann's Nazi salute. You said you went to the ADL site. YOu never said that you found an article confirming their condemnation of the salute. Instead you went off on a tangent about people's misusing Nazi Analogies. I thought that is what you were mad about. I am sure ADL uses many Nazi analogies (more so than Olbermann). Therefore, I thought that you were referring to them.
I still think that is a reasonable interpretation from what you wrote.

But if you read the letter that ADL wrote to Keith, you would see that they were complaining about the use of Nazi analogies as cheap shots against rivals. The ADL (notice I treat it as a plural)would not use Nazi analogies to score points,as that was the basis of their complaint against KO.
Why would you think that I would slur the ADL?Please do not interpret support of "human rights" for Palestinians as anti-Semitic or anti-Israeli.

If you asked most liberals, hell,if you asked most Jews what a "jewish-trotsky American" is,they would think you were kooked.Don't get to tied up in what YOU think is "liberal mythology".
But you are reaching to equate opposition to the neo-con agenda (mostly Jews by your definition,I don't know that it's true) to anti-Semitism.Don't strain your back, that's a heck of a reach.Since the majority of Jews vote Democratic,by your thinking wouldn't opposing Democrats be anti-Semitic?If I favored U Conn over Notre Dame, does that make me anti-Catholic.

You've offered yet another bad analogy.
It does not follow that Danny's argument is that one could be charged with being anti-semitic for going up against the Democratic Party because of its Jewish members, unless the entity going against the it was arguing that those Jewish members were a cabal who manipulated the Party for the benefit of another country-- Israel.
That's a classic charge by anti-semites and that's what the neocons have been accused of doing from a broad range of folks who should choose their words more carefully.

You and I both know that not having the same IP address means nothing to prove individuality.
Having consistently different like IP addresses does mean something. If two posters post with different, but consistent, IP addresses the assumption of individuality can be assumed. However, it still is not rock solid proof, as the offender could be diligent in posting under different provider addresses.

Very true. But the weekend links post is staring everyone right in the face on the front page of the site. And I thought I did point you to it.

What do you mean "link"? Mrs. R. Adrian Philby was a nick that OTM posted under on Olbermann Watch. He held long arguments with himself under another name of Rudy Ramirez.
Those posts are gone because Bob deleted them all.
OTM is this person. It may not be want to believe, but it's true.
On an unmoderated board, with the help and assistance of some fellow trolls, OTM did his best to turn OW into a board about anything other than Keith Olbermann.

It looks to me like some Republicans/Conservatives are using the anti-Semitism card the same way that some Democrats/Liberals use the race card,as a way of ending discussion of what should be valid and important topics of conversation.
Opposition to the building of new settlements in the occupied territories does not equate anti-Semitism.Questioning the influence of a pro-Israel lobby on US foreign policy (Mearsheimer and Walt) does not equate anti-Semitism, as some have tried (and apparently succeeded) in painting it.

Dog Pound trolls operating under the cover of darkness messed with the poll #'s again. If they could, they would shut down FoxNews, enact a new fairness doctrine and quite frankly they would like to shut down this site as well. They are not satisfied trading insults with each other, they wish to silence anyone that does not agree with their world view.

Fox Fan,
Besides all the of what Cecelia says, I'll just add this and end my part. NVH called OS "Oblio." Now, that may sound completely ridiculous to you (and you Johnny), but the troll at OW who ruined the site for a time called OS Oblio with a detailed, insulting explanation as to why. How many times are you going to hear the same person be referred to as Oblio? Maybe you haven't noticed how the average joe kind of guy NVH who used to make typos and use "their" for "there" and that sort of thing is becoming quite articulate lately. Slipping out of character is a fault of the troll. (I was pulling for you NVH until the Ann Richards defense on the tail of OTM...)
Ignore the trolls you say Mike C? When you do that, they create more characters and talk to each other. Why do you think OW went to a registration system? Somebody was out to sabotage the site and took much pleasure in it. Philby often could be your "friend."
There is a whole lot more I could say, but I won't. The trolls always argue that it doesn't matter what name one uses. I can't see Johnny having to delete 10,000 comments and I give him kudos for keeping the trolls in line. (and even myself when I get off topic as now).

Look, when people are so consumed with hate over a channel they don't even watch and a blog they (say they) never visit, it's no surprise that they'll stay up nights looking for ways to score some sort of "victory" over their latest designated windmill. Of course, she is probably getting better ratings on Fox than she would on CNN. That might be part of the answer.

My! My! My! I go off to help with a palanca weekend and come back to, what, a spirited discussion of cable news? The ugly dog on F&F? Today's panel discussion on FNS? Brazile's analysis of Obama's money situation? A review of Williams on MTP? No. Cecelia pulling the Rambler away from the carport and loading it up with mounds of beat up, battered old luggage, no doubt for a long trip with all of her friends (not to worry, the Rambler is big enough, even with all of the luggage, to hold all of her friends) to visit the birthplace of Warren G. Harding, and other sites associated with fond childhood figures. Let's just all hope Grammie remembered to drain the sweet pickles before she put them in the tuna salad last time. Nothing worse than a soggy tuna sandwich as you're driving across Kansas.
I notice that after I left on Friday, Sharon posed the question: How do the Olbermannicphobes increase his popularity? The answer is really very simple and it informs all of us in how we ought to handle those things in our lives which peeve us (in my case, Sean Hannity, for example) and on this site.
Olbermann, one of the dimmer bulbs in the box, to be sure, recognizes that everytime BOR attacks him, it draws attention to him. Of course, BOR even goes one step more by never saying Olbermann's name. A mystery and an allure are created. And, everyone who dislikes BOR will assume that they like Olbermann. It's a foo'ls game, but image and name recognition are the substance, if you will, of television.
Then, a site devoted purely to the denigration of Olbermann? How many people have that? That all rather magnifies Olbermann to presidential status, doesn't it. Ever heard of Smirking Chimp? Then, if the curious ever read the Olbermann denigration site, what do you suppose they think of the manical, illiterate rantings of a Jeff/Royal King or the mindless, albeit voluminous cultic musings of others. Don't you suppose readers will say something akin to, "Gee, this Olbermann might have something if nut cases like this don't like him. I'll go check him out." Even Cox recognized this during one of his site shut-downs or when he was out raising money to chisel Teddy Rooselvelt off Mt. Rushmore and put Bush in his place. Cox specifically said that site might have the opposite effect. Rather clearly, it has.
To be sure, there were so well-reasoned, intelligent, articulate posting at the site, by some very wise people. But, the site as a whole certainly fed into what has unfortunately become the Olbermann allure. And, now that the site has deteriorated, I am sure it ceases to feed the allure, as I am sure BOR will cease to do when Ailes or someone else finally orders him to just cool it.
When we give publicity to these personalities, good or bad, we build them up. Factual discussions chip away at the allure. When the allure is gone, they are gone. That is one of the reasons I am sure Johnny (and Mike) work to keep this on topic. And, everytime one of these baggage-toting expeditions or name game marathons starts up, it hurts this site and its goals. In the end, they are always mere narcicisstic exercises about the person toting the bagge or playing the game and not the site and the topic.

OTM,
You seem to be selective in your analysis. I wonder why. I mean, just about every Fox personality has a dog (at nH) who is assigned to denigrate him or her. NH is far more excessive in its criticisms. Posters at NH seem much more mentally imbalanced than you find at this (or I daresay) the OW site. Article writers are allowed to flame Fox personalities and posters are allowed to flame other posters with no corrective action taken by the siteowners. This site and OW are tame in their content compared to NH.
So why did you focus you analysis exclusively on the more responsible site (OW)? Why did you leave the more flagrantly irresponsible site (NH) out of your analysis entirely?

First, I don't know NH very well. I tend to imagine I visit it far less than you have, Danny. It is an extremely poor site. Shoddy writing, shoddy design, not balance or counter-balance.
Secondly, OW, when it is on topic, bores me very quickly. It is a well-designed site and some of the writing is actually very good. But, how many times does anyone really want to read about Olbermann's orange-tinged skin, for example. I suppose if I were more interested in Olbermann, positively or negatively, OW would interest me more.
At this point, I probably ought to add I think Cox and Dollar, particularly Dollar, could do a first class general political website. With good writing and links and top notch analysis, of which Follar is capable, the culls would be weeded out quickly.
Thirdly, I like this site. It serves a purpose. It discharges its mission. It also provides good information and good discussion (save and except the meanderings of some). Anything I say that appears to be a criticism of this site is fully constructive (at least by intent), and is not an endorsement of any other site, particularly not NH. Indeed, my favorties, in the politics folder, are few, First Read, ABC, Politico, Huffington and this site. I hold it in high esteem, and I want the very best for it.

What could be more self-serving than for the man of a thousand aliases to call it "baggage" for anyone to remember his shenanigans.
It's rather like the unspoken rules of households headed by a narcissistic authority figure. Not only are the other members supposed to accept the authority figure's pernicious games, but the memory of each caper is to disappear down some rabbit hole, never to be referenced or thought of again, and any conduct to contrary is the height of irrational mean-spirited victimization of our "special" guy...
What a grand world it would be if everyone would just accept our narcissist at face value. What grand time he could have then, alternately stroking and punishing all the other silly little creatures.
Well, too bad, OTM, that there are so many of us who know you only too well. Who WILL bring up the days when you were frequently in full fey wrist-to-forehead supercilious drama over the unworthiness and the deceptive Countdown summaries of Mr. Dollar, and all in order to agitate others who, while not so hissy-fitty as you, were only too willing to unload an avalanche of off color insults.
It took the software version of an electrified fence to keep your twisted self off Olbermann Watch. Polite requests that you leave, to outings of your aliases weren't enough.
That's the way it is here too. You've said your goodbyes at least twice now, and reappeared for some reason or another.

How many posters do we have at this site who have identified themselves as being from Great Britain? I know that Fox has a sister network in England, but I doubt that network carries many of the Fox prime time News Shows.
How accessible are Fox prime time news shows to English people? Why would not English posters be more concerned about English news personalities than American news personalities? Are there sites that criticize (even denigrate) British news personalities, similar to what we have here?

Is Cavuto on the Big Oil Take? Is Exxon paying him to lie?
Hey - George Will issued a retraction:
"In a previous column, I stated that China, in partnership with Cuba, is drilling for oil 60 miles from the Florida coast. While Cuba has partnered with Chinese companies to drill in the Florida Straits, no Chinese company has been involved in Cuba's oil exploration that close to the United States."
Administration: Cheney erred in oil exploration comment
By H. JOSEF HEBERT
Associated Press
WASHINGTON Vice President Dick Cheney's office acknowledged on Thursday that he was mistaken when he asserted that China, at Cuba's behest, is drilling for oil in waters 60 miles from the Florida coast...
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/5834227.html
So, 9 days after the disgusting Republican liars are exposed peddling their manure on Fox "News", why is Cavuto perptuating the lie?
Neil "the liar" Cavuto on June 20...
"...But, if you get more bang for your buck, congressman, off the Everglades, 50 miles off the Florida coast, 50 miles ah, on the western side of the Florida coast, on the Gulf of Mexico where the Chinese are drilling..."
But he's not the only Republican slime lying to throw red meat to the idiots to allow drilling under the ridiculous notion that we can "drill our way out" of $4.00 gas... (Yes, that optimistic 0.02% added to the world supply will drop prices by - oh - whaddya think? A buck or two a gallon at the pump?)
Cavuto - shameless, brazen, willful, boldface stinkin' liar who is treating his viewers like brain dead losers. I hope Exxon is paying him - at least, for these lies.
|
Hey - where's the video and pictures of that huge Chinese oil rig 50 miles off the coast of Florida... (Hilarious what they try to pull, sad that idiots out there believe it... But, the GOP has become a cult so it's not so surprising. Sad but not surprising.)
Now defend sleazy slime bucket Cavuto and his laughable boldface stinkin' lie...

OS, you're not paranoid if they're really out to get you...
Remember this little gem from Mr. Bored Stiff by Olbermann, that Grammie found on the Olbermann fan site Thankyoukeitholbermann blog:
"I think he's [Keith Olbermann] really hit a nerve, and hsi detractors are feeling some heat. Has anyone taken a look at Olbermann Watch lately? A complete purge. If you criticize FOX or agree with Olbermann, you're gone. Stalinistic group is Cox, Dollar and the infamous gang of four over there.

CE
Ok, CE's post has now been edited by the siteowner. If what remains is on topic then here is my defense of Cavuto, Republicans, and others he has disparaged:
we need to quit fiddling around (while Rome is figuratively burning) worrying what we can't do. We need to treat the steady rise in oil prices as a national security crisis. We need a full court press to solve it which encompasses drilling for more oil use of available technology to reduce oil spending (including building nuclear reactors) and research into a new technologies that can supplant oil. It is not an either or proposition as CE has tried to make it.
Since we can't pivot on a dime and we will be somewhat dependent on oil for the next several decades, we should drill wherever we can. That includes drilling off shore ( Louisiana is doing an admirable job of this already); drilling in protected wilderness areas, and drilling in Anwar. Hell, I say drill in the Grand Canyon and drill on the White House lawn if it will add even one more barrel a day. If it would soften our dependence on foreign oil even a little.
At the same time, we need to have a Manhattan Project to research using renewable fuel to power our cars. Understand that we don't even have a working model of such a car yet. Once we get that model it will take some time to put the new technology and the new delivery systems in place. That means that it will take time before our society can fully utilize the new technology (hopefully we find one). This is what Cavuto understands which CE does not. We can do it quicker though if we really treat the oil crises as a national emergency.
The fools and the liars are the ones who keep coming up with reasons why we cannot solve the problems. The smart people are the ones who say "yes we can," and are willing to do whatever it takes to overcome this threat to our economy and our security. Even if it takes a full court press.

Nope, the site is still around.
Here's the link. Just pull down the comment section under the six "atta boys!" (for Keith Olbermann) in order to read Mark's "atta boy"...

Thanks for the link Cecelia. Puts a new light on a lot of things.
All the nice things Mark has said about Johnny, and now we find that Mark really thinks that Dollar is Stalinist. I'll bet dollar is devastated!
I wonder who else is in the "infamous gang of four." Are you a member, Cecelia? What do you have to do to make the list?
I am also wondering if CE is a OTM sock puppet. CE appeared out of nowhere just as OTM's motor was running down,

I generally agree with MOST of the practical steps that you laid out in your post. Small disagreement about the usefulness of expanded drilling (my fear being that small, marginal discoveries will provide an excuse to continue doing nothing in terms of conservation/alternatives),but I'm sure we could work that out.
However, how your post was a defence of Cavuto is difficult to understand. Are you saying that since we're in deep doo-doo that it's alright to pass along false information,as long as it get's people excited to do the right thing. That's an almost classic example of propoganda.
And if this is not what you are saying,I apologize, but you need to clarify your defence of Cavuto. What does awareness and action on a problem have to do with reporting false news?

How accessible are Fox prime time news shows to English people? Why would not English posters be more concerned about English news personalities than American news personalities? Are there sites that criticize (even denigrate) British news personalities, similar to what we have here?
---
There are some who post here from time-to-time who are much better able to address your questions than I. I am one of those Britexans, a person who commutes back and forth at least once a month. In the airport lounges at IAH or LGW, this is a frequent topic of conversation.
Although Murdoch has a great influence, perhaps a diminishing one, in British media, FNC has no real presence on British television. In fact, if it did, it would be rather confusing to the British. Murdoch was an avid Thatcherite, then shifted sharply to the left and was an equally avid Blairian. I think it safe to say Murdoch is not longer held up to be a prototype rightie in the UK, although he is still very much a boob exploiter.
Your use of "personality" is so interesting. In the US, news people are accorded star treatment, a factor that, in my view, compromises journalistic integrity. In the UK, television anchors are generally referred to as "news readers" or "news presenters," which seems to be highly descriptive. I think the British would be generally disparaging of a presenter who, himself or herself, became the subject of the news. Generally, the only real break I have ever detected in the rather stoic approach is on the morning news shows. John Turnbull, for example, BBC, sometimes "Breakfast," finds himself the subject of blog entries from time-to-time, such as the following:
http://caughtinthemiddleman.wordpress.com/2008/03/12/whatever-happened-to-the-news/
Generally, however, I think the more staid approach rules. That may explain the keen interest in the steamier American version.

If I were you, Danny, I would assume that anyone who doesn't parrot Cecelia's opinion is I, because surely there is only one (1) person in the world who does not fall in line behind her. You could ask Johnny to perform an IP search, of course, but if the results support Cecelia's position, it will be because of the infallibility of the IP investigative tool, wheareas if the results do not support her position, it will be because anyone can manipulate IP addresses. Let's not be logically inconsistent, please.
By the way, I stand by my the oft-cut and pasted quotation. In fairness to all readers and posters, perhaps we should post it in a permanent pane. That will certainly save Cecelia from reposting ad nauseum.
At the time I made that post I believed that to be absolutely true. And, while the purge has left OW a vast wasteland, as I was sure it would, I have developed an enormous respect for this site and for Johnny. Perhaps, I should apologize for changing my opinion in light of new facts known to me or old facts more clearly seen by me. I will not do so, however. I reserve the right to change my opinion when warranted.

I have no information (and I take no position) regarding whether China is helping Cuba drill off-shore. To me, that is a trivial point (although I think that the fact that Cuba and Brazil and other Latin American countries are drilling off shore is instructive).
More specifically I was reacting to these sentences from CEs post:But he's not the only Republican slime lying to throw red meat to the idiots to allow drilling under the ridiculous notion that we can "drill our way out" of $4.00 gas... (Yes, that optimistic 0.02% added to the world supply will drop prices by - oh - whaddya think? A buck or two a gallon at the pump?)
I doubt that Cavuto thinks that drilling (by itself) is ultimately the solution to our energy problem. However, I congratulate Cavuto for using his influence to get us to get serious about oil exploration; because (as I said in my post) that is part of the solution of the problem.
CE says that allowing more drilling is ridiculous. I say (and I think Cavuto would agree) what is ridiculous is pinning all of our hopes on a future technology that hasnt been developed yet. That approach would have us resemble the characters in the play Waiting for Godot; they passively wasted time, doing nothing, while waiting for the coming of some vague entity named Godot. Godot (whoever or whatever that is) would solve all their problems.
As I said in my post, we need to act now, and not be passive. A large part of acting now is to drastically increase our domestic oil production and refining.
Especially since we cannot pivot on a dime with respect to what we use for fuel, we need people like Cavuto to encourage oil production. We dont need idiots lecturing us on the futility of attempting to produce more oil. How much domestic oil we can produce if we really got serious about the problem is probably closer to what we find in the following article than what CE said in his post. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/06
But, as I said in my post, we have not fully solved the threat to our economy and our national security until we have moved radically to another source of fuel. NVH, I am glad you agree fundamentally with the practical steps outlined in my previous post.
Generally, our news industry (including cable news) is given a certain protections under our constitution. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams believed that a free press has a vital mission in a democracy to keep the people informed. In this time of national emergency (and here is where I am somewhat in agreement with you NVH), Cavuto and others in cable news have failed in their mission by not more clearly calling for a full court press to solve our national emergency.

Mark,
You have to admit that your "atta boy" comment was not very respectful to Johnny. In fact, I say that calling him "Stalinist" is grossly disrespectful.
If I am not mistaken, additions can still be made to that "atta boy" comments section. Since you say that your opinion has changed, wouldn't the honorable thing for you to do be the following: go back to that comments section and post a correction? Also, an apology to Johnny would be in order.
If you don't at least attempt to do those things, I will continue to doubt your sincerity. I will also not take any future post of yours seriously.
I doubt that I am alone.
