'The Left Wing Lie Machine'J$P Audio! John Gibson catches Media Matters in another lie.
We're shocked, shocked.
From The John Gibson Show, September 28 2007 Gibby says the Media Matters attack on Rush Limbaugh is a smear and a lie: Link for audio only [mp3]: ![]() posted: Fri - September 28, 2007 at 07:40 PM j$p  send Francis W. Porretto Thank you for this. We are witnessing the resurgence of Big Lie technique, as it was perfected by Hitler in the 1930s. It has Big Money behind it, and a cadre of propagators who are apparently without any scruple. It must be opposed with all our means. Rebuttals such as Gibson's must be made known to as many people as possible. September 29, 2007, 6:00:17 AM EDT – Like – Reply Biff You gotta go to the site and also check out the comments. MM is still standing by the story. To recap: Rush goes into a fairly detailed accounting of a soldier who misreprensented himself and who was touted as a real soldier by the anti war left, when in fact he was a phoney soldier. But they're saying Rush's use of the term "phoney soldier" was UNRELATED to the detailed discussion of the phoney soldier which immediately followed. Funny stuff. That is based on 'if we had a concerned or basic do they're job' IRS/FEC. That would be asking too much of a government employee. September 29, 2007, 9:15:08 AM EDT – Like – Reply WCW Sorry, Gibson is lying. 2 ways: 1. Rush is clearly discussing the previous caller named Mike, a US soldier against the war, when he says "phony soldiers". 2. Rush keeps talking about "phony soldiers", plural, when there was only one case of a fraud. Gibson and Rush trying to cover up the many US soldiers in Iraq who publicly against the war. Ever heard of the organization Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW)? Gibson and Rush don't want you to. IVAW is in 43 states, on numerous bases overseas, including Iraq, and currently has 20 chapters. Don't get your info about the war from a drug-addicted talkshow host who gets paid millions to lie and never served a day in their life in the army. http://www.ivaw.org September 29, 2007, 10:31:50 AM EDT – Like – Reply johnny dollar > there was only one case of a fraud Not from what I've read. > Ever heard of the organization Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW)? Limbaugh the Draft Dodger is leading you guys over the cliff like lemmings, he's lying to you and you lap it up. It's time to stop hating America and start respecting the truth. Now you go and do your homework about the many Iraq vets who have come out against the war. Most importantly, read this great piece from August by six brave soldiers questioning the war -- and realize TWO have already been killed since it was written. These are the men Limbaugh has slimed. You should be writing about and supporting them. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/19/opinion/19jayamaha.html?8qa September 29, 2007, 12:33:31 PM EDT – Like – Reply sknabt It's too bad a previous poster started calling Limbaugh names because, otherwise, he does a good summation of the facts. Rush is doing his standard routine of sticking his foot firmly into his mouth then spinning like mad to extricate it. His highly loyal and partisan fans can be counted upon to stick with anything he says. More interesting to me than the "phony soldier" quote with caller #2 is the transcript of caller #1 that's lost in all the smoke. In it, you have Rush essentially calling a guy he doesn't know a liar just because he can't hammer him into his left-right stereotype (while assuming the guy who agrees with him is telling the truth). I have a friend of a friend who's extremely conservative. He was very pro-war to the point he called me "al Qaeda" for opposing it (before the invasion when the right was convinced Saddam was harboring terrorists). Eventually, he turned against the war and Bush because of it. And, sadly, I just heard his son was buried last Tuesday, a casualty of the war. There are a lot of conservatives I know sick of the war and who no longer support it. Which explains why the most pro-war Republican candidate, McCain, is an also-ran. Rush is correct most soldiers joined the war knowing they would end up in Iraq. Do they all (except the "phony" ones) support the war? All certainly not. Most probably. But there are a lot who have given up on Iraq and are just fighting for the soldier by their side and out of loyalty to America. Sure, you get a solider in uniform - a trick Fox News loves to play - and stick a camera in their face and they'll spout the party line. They have to. It's a UCMJ violation to do otherwise (I know, I served). The rest of Rush's spin is weak. Rush raises the question with the safe, like-minded caller #2, "Why should we pull -- what is the imperative for pulling out?" He claims liberals don't have an answer for it. Really? I suspect he didn't ask it of caller #1 because the answer is so obvious. American can't fight a war on behalf of a people who don't really care. Sure, at some level the Iraqis want to be free. Everyone does. But it comes at a price of personal risk they're unwilling to make. Without our backing, often Iraqi troops just throw down their weapons and run. Even Rush acknowledges that without us the government will collapse. Too few Iraqis really support it for it to be viable without us propping it up. I'm glad Media Matters pointed this clip out to me. Gibby parroting Rush (after hypocritically accusing Olbermann of parroting MM) is hysterically funny. It also makes Gibby's defense of Rush that MM took it all out of context as ludicrous of Rush's identical spin on the topic. . September 29, 2007, 12:47:31 PM EDT – Like – Reply Bruce Media Matters is a proven liar... The left lies all the time. Take the "Bush Lied" meme; Bush never said he believed Saddam was seeking yellow cake in Niger. He said that British Intelligence said that Saddam was seeking Yellowcake in Africa. And the British continue to stand by that. And as Joe Wilson reported to the CIA in his verbal report Saddam had sought yellowcake in Niger but he didn't get any because Niger was aware he wasn't allowed to have it. Of course Bush never said Saddam got any only that he was seeking it. Joe Wilson is a fine example of the many liars on the left. Where did I say any such thing? September 29, 2007, 1:37:47 PM EDT – Like – Reply ImNotBlue Lets ignore for a moment that the actual transcript (not the MM "you'll think what we want you to think" transcript) makes it clear what Rush and his caller were talking about. (See the real transcript at http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/2007/09/rush-limbaugh-troops-controversy-media.html) Let's ignore that for the moment, because all the haters seem to do that anyway... so fine, we'll move on for the moment. Here's my question to you: Why are few anti-war soldiers, who somehow find their way to a television camera as soon as they have their 'revelation,' why are their opinions considered more valuable than the other soldiers? Why is their opinion, be there only a handful of them, considered so much more important, than say all those other soldiers who feel they need to continue the mission? Answer me that. Tell me why the two guys out of a thousand are the ones we really should be listening to... the ones who should be dictating policy. September 29, 2007, 1:40:58 PM EDT – Like – Reply johnny dollar > But Limbaugh did not refer to MacBeth during his September 26 broadcast until 1 minute, 50 seconds after... OK, so your point is that something he says two minutes later, in the course of a show that runs three hours, could not possiby, conceivably, in any way, be related to what he said two minutes before. Even though the subject matter was identical? It was just, what, a coincidence? I suppose that is possible. But the real point is that Media Matters, which KNEW he went on to discuss Jesse Macbeth--an actual, proven, adjudicated phony soldier--just two minutes later, deliberately left that out of their attack piece. They didn't cite it and say, oh it was two minutes later. They didn't include it and let their readers decide. Instead, they left it out completely, made up their own spin, and put that out. And nobody who read it had any idea that in fact there was a different interpretation possible, because MM left it out. I've already caught media matters lying on national television. And when they pull things like this--leaving out context, casually omitting parts of the discussion that don't fit their spin--they have to expect people are going to cry "foul". BTW, I'll say again that I'm not a Rush listener. I must have heard all of ten minutes of his show over this calendar year. I'm more interested in the techniques MM uses to subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) massage their clips and transcripts for their own ends. Whether he was right, or wrong, is to me a big nothing-burger. Now if his web team put up a transcript where they left out two minutes, and didn't indicate such, then they are guilty of the same thing Media Matters did. Same with the audio. Give the readers Everything, and let them make up their own minds. But pointing to Rush and saying, see, he did it too, is not intellectual argument. It's the old tu quoque fallacy once again. If Rush was deceptive in what he posted, that doesn't exonerate MM from being deceptive in what They posted. And as said above, the fact that within two minutes of the "phony soldier" comment Rush was talking about a known phony soldier gives context that may or may not affect how one interprets his meaning. That's why it was dishonest to chop it out. I have spoken. September 29, 2007, 3:09:22 PM EDT – Like – Reply WCW Well Johnny, you seem to be in full retreat. Here's a question for the Media Splatters morons: If Rush really was referring to soldiers legitimately in the military who didn't agree with the war as "phony soldiers," why then didn't he give examples of these kinds of of "phony soldiers?" You know - highlight legitimate soldiers who disagreed with the war? If that's what he meant, he surely would've gone on to demonstrate it. Why did he, not more than two minutes later refer specifically to Jesse Macbeth as an example of a phony soldier? And why did Media Splatters leave the next six or seven minutes out of the transcript of their original smear post, and only provided it a day later when it was demonstrated that they deliberately and dishonestly left out some key facts? Face it - Media Splatters deliberately removed the context of the remark and tried (unsuccessfully) to create their own context (or lack of it). And they got BUSTED. It's obvious, given the context and proximity of the remark to the example cited, what Rush meant by phony soldiers. He mentioned the phrase, and then he cited an example of a phony soldier. You. October 1, 2007, 5:59:23 AM EDT – Like – Reply fooyou Johnny I think you should change the title of this thread to the "right wing Lie Machine" and go on to explain How media matters in NO way Lied but, in fact, John Gibson was lying about media matters. Lets look at what happned: Limbaugh had just finished arguing with a caller from Chicago who said he was an anti-war Republican who served in the military. Limbaugh said that was impossible Republicans arent genuine unless they support Bushs Iraq policy. As for the callers claim about military service, Limbaugh said, Right. Right. Right, I know. And I, by the way, used to walk on the moon! Limbaughs argument wasnt subtle the caller couldnt have worn the uniform because he supports withdrawal. The VERY NEXT caller also identified himself as currently serving in the military, and criticized those who disagree with Bushs policy. We pick it up there . LIMBAUGH: Theres a lot more than that that they dont understand. They cant even if the next guy that calls here, Im gonna ask him: Why should we pull what is the imperative for pulling out? Whats in it for the United States to pull out? They cant I dont think they have an answer for that other than, Well, we just gotta bring the troops home. CALLER 2: Yeah, and, you know what LIMBAUGH: Save the keep the troops safe or whatever. I its not possible, intellectually, to follow these people. CALLER 2: No, its not, and whats really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media. LIMBAUGH: The phony soldiers. CALLER 2: The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and theyre willing to sacrifice for their country. LIMBAUGH: They joined to be in Iraq. They joined CALLER 2: A lot of them the new kids, yeah. LIMBAUGH: Well, you know where youre going these days, the last four years, if you signed up. The odds are youre going there or Afghanistan or somewhere. CALLER 2: Exactly, sir. What happned next has nothing to do with limbaugh was saing it is what happend before. There was NO reason for media matters to post this because it is not relevant. Gibsons claim that media matters lied is a right wing smear. Oh no, no need to post that at all. Why let the reader decide if it's relevant or not? We'll just leave it out and the reader will never even know he said it! I suppose if you're desperate to be an apologist for MM you could defend that. Oh, and the long cut-and-pastes? Do that again and I'll just delete it. Quote a line or two and provide a link. October 1, 2007, 4:44:19 PM EDT – Like – Reply fooyou Well first off he was not a phony soldier he may have been a liar but he did in fact serve in the millitary... which you will know if you listen to your clip. So Rush was not talking about a "Phony Soldier" after he hung up with the caller. But let's assume you are right and that this is not a desperate attemtp to flip a fair critsism of Limbaugh back to media matters for no reason. Look at the context of the call. The caller says real soldiers want to be in Iraq. That sorta implies if you disagree with the policy are you are not a real soldier. Rush agrees saying basicaly come on if you join you know where you are going. Meaning he is lumping ALL Soldiers who critsize the current policy as phony. Since media matter's Criticism of Rush is basically that he is calling people who serve and are against the war phonies it doesn't matter whether the (debatble) next segment about a lying soldier is ran or not. It is pretty apparent that ALL Vets against the war are phonies in Rush's eyes and and that is the gist of MM report. Since you are desperate to defend Rush and Gibson though, who was basically lying (and didn't play the more important Proceeding call on Rush's show) I know you are going to say that mm should have played it all anyway. Well, They plaed the relevant part. the next part in no way changes what Rush was getting at and playing his whole damn show wouldn't have changed that. October 1, 2007, 5:27:47 PM EDT – Like – Reply ImNotBlue Thanks R$... you're the first person to answer the question! But, if they're not more important... then why does everybody get their panties in a bunch when one of them speaks up? Why are they all over the media? Why are they then looked at as someone who "really" knows what's going on... versus the rest of the soldiers? Why is such a small minority, given such a big platform to speak for everyone else? And Foo... you've got to be kidding me. He wasn't a phony soldier? I once got a letter from the army... does that mean I served in it too? The guy never made it out of boot camp... he's no soldier. Just like someone who attended police training, but didn't graduate isn't a police office... or someone who attends high school, but never graduates isn't a high school graduate... this guy isn't anything but a someone who attended boot camp, but never graduated. He is not a soldier, nor has he ever been... and anyone who tries to say any different is just trying to manipulate the facts to fit their own agenda. October 1, 2007, 5:36:42 PM EDT – Like – Reply fooyou Fair enough. It still does not change the fact that Rush was clearly lumping ALL Soldiers who diagree with the war as phony soldiers. It also doesn't change the fact that, that was in essance what media matters was reporting. Finally it doesn't change the fact that gibson neglected the more relevant call preceding the call in which Rush used the "phony soldier" term a call that further demonstrates the case against Rush. Media matters reporting on this matter remains accurate. October 1, 2007, 5:49:23 PM EDT – Like – Reply David S Let's take a look at the comment Rush and the caller made. Remember, the caller Mike was following another Mike who Rush had just accused of not being a Republican because he did not agree with Rush. So the second mike says. CALLER 2: No, it's not, and what's really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media. Now Rush says for the first time. LIMBAUGH: The phony soldiers. Now this is where the caller defines what a "real soldier" is. CALLER 2: The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and they're willing to sacrifice for their country. So here is where Rush agrees with the caller. LIMBAUGH: They joined to be in Iraq. They joined -- CALLER 2: A lot of them -- the new kids, yeah. LIMBAUGH: Well, you know where you're going these days, the last four years, if you signed up. The odds are you're going there or Afghanistan or somewhere. So, if Rush had been talking about a specific person why bring up the generalization about real soldiers being "proud". It's because he was not talking about a specific person - "Jessie MacBeth" who's name isn't even mentioned until after a full minute or more had passed after this exchange!
