The only media bias I see re: Russia/Georgia is not enough vehemence against Russia's incursion. They goaded Georgian troops into South Ossetia and then slaughtered them with extreme prejudice. So yes, there is media bias in play. Just not the type Karasin is suggesting.

What a great way to start of the morning: unsubstantiated hyperbole and a good old-fashion media conspiracy theory. Let's move onto yellow cake and aluminum tubes.

Johnny, speaking of MSNBC (and by relation-- NBC), I just read something on the channel's plans for coverage of the DNC shindig and pondered the irony that according to Olbermann, Steve Doocy's son Peter is a mere cog in the Murdoch machine and a mindless clone for doing then the same thing that young Luke Russert will be doing for NBC and MSNBC at the upcoming convention.

I know this is topic drift and subject to deleting, but it's worth thinking about.

BTW, Johnny, there were some very frightening moments this morning during Steve Harrigan's coverage from Gori, Georgia, on F & F. I prayed like crazy for Harrigan and his crew.

And I pray too for Bob Novak.

It's not topic drift or subject to deleting. You will be seeing young Russert on MSNBC. And Olbermann is the face of MSNBC. So you actually posted about cable news! Great thanks for that!

I suppose a world of distinction can be drawn between the two (2) apparently fine young men and their circumstances, but I find this all rather cheesy. We are, as a society, far, far from a meritocracy. Perhaps, that is a good thing, to some extent, but I do think we sometimes mimic England in our drive to create a class of inbred dimwits. Often, this all falls in under the label "legacy," so favored by our finer institutions of learning. Whatever these two (2) young men bring to the table in terms of gifts and skills, I rather imagine we have journalism and RTV schools and studios all across the country with far more gifted and skilled young men and women that are not getting a well-deserved opportunity.

Thanks for your post about Novak and Harrigan, Cecelia. Not much more can be said about Novak, but I really do want to commend Harrigan. His reporting is some of the finest I have seen and heard under difficult conditions in a long while. Nic Robertson and Michael Ware need to make room at the table for Steve Harrigan.

I don't understand why Robert Novak must come with a "hold my nose" caveat any more than Ted Kennedy should.

This sort of close-minded, almost clannish--- thinking is beyond me. It's the sort of nonsense that has seemingly required the mentally challenged Keith Olbermann to take a stand against MySpace of all things.

We're becoming a nation of closed-minded zealots.

I am actually very fond of Novak and respect his work, immensely. As you realize, this is distinctly possible. I often disagree with Novak, but, so what? Blessedly, he is not a blonde, hairsprayed, perfumed, overly made up, falsely charming, politically correct personality. These days, that makes Novak something of a national treasure.

I had previously expressed this, perhaps in some overly-laden text, easily missed. I just thought repetition might have a ghoulish quality.

I just saw a promo for Countdown on a break from the Olympics. It went something like this: if you haven't watched Countdown, here is what you have been missing: Cut to Keith discussing a policy not to discuss "Orally" anymore and how he had a meltdown of the Inside Edition proportion because "we beat him by 26%" in some demo ratings. Then someone hands him a paper and he says that now there is a new policy that BOR (I don't remember how the name was pronounced) is allowed to be discussed sometimes.

What a crock.

I do think the intramural BOR/KO deal has become tiresome, Sharon.

Having said that, in the clutter of all the smears about BOR last night, KO did come to an essential point: In light of the Mackris matter, who in the hell is BOR to demand answers about (multi-)million dollar buy-outs of silence arising from the tawdry sexual episodes of Edwards? I don't want to suggest that BOR is somehow disqualified from his host position or that somehow KO is a paragon of moral virtue. It does strike me that BOR has enormous chutzpah in bringing up this issue. Silence might have better served him. I find this akin to adulterers and divorcees running for political office on family values platforms.

By the way: The question is warranted and good. It just ought be posed by someone less compromised.

If there were some question as to the legality of the source of BOR's payout to Mackris, then you would have made a fair point.
August 13, 2008, 11:11:50 AM EDT – Like – Reply

I may be confused here, Sharon. Is BOR's point that the money paid to Ms. Hunter is questionable, tainted, illegal, or is it that he believes there was money paid for media silence? I think his outrage du jour was for the latter. If so, that would be unethical, but if it is illegal, it would be the sort of illegality the AG describes as against the law, but not criminal. It also raises a conspiracy theory which I'm not prepared to entertain at this time.

The money paid by BOR to Mackris, is, indisputably legal, part of a court-approved and ordered settlement to a lawsuit. But, the question is, did BOR pay money to buy silence? At some level, that is abundantly clear. He did.

I think you're on stronger ground if you argue that the distinction is not legality or illegality, but the inherent distinction between a celerbrity/media personality and a politician/government official. The latter have legally imposed fiduciary duties to us the former do not have.

BTW: I don't buy that BOR knew all about this and set on the story out of compassion or respect for Elizabeth Edwards. He may well have compassion and respect for her, most of us do, but BOR is of the KO genre in one important respect: he is an unmitigated muckraker (and not in the positive, social responsibility sense). I think he simply lacked the sources to proceed. FNC attorneys ought do and probably do have him on a short leash.

As for as Olbermann, who knows?

The point is not that moral purity is necessary in a journalist, but that outrage ought to be reserved for the morally pure(er). The grandiose statements and assumptions of BOR just make his coverage absurd, comedic.

That was the point du jour from yesterday.

Mark says:

Here is the complete answer:

"We had the mistress story last spring, but chose not to air it because of the pain it would bring to Elizabeth Edwards, a brave woman, and her thee children. Also, Edwards was out of politics by then. If he had held power, it would have been a different story."

It is astounding to me that Mark how quick Mark is to see moral equivalence when there is none.

In BOR's case, there is no cliam that he physically had illicit sex with anyone. There is no claim that he cheated on his wife when she was dying of cancer. There is no claim that he fathered a child out of wedlock. There is no claim that he funneled illegal and secretive hush money to a mistress. There is only the claim that he may have said naughty things over a TELEPHONE to a woman with whom he had a business relationship. What exactly was said we will never know. All we do know is that it resulted in a sexual harassment lawsuit and BOR eventually paid money to make the whole thing go away.

To draw some kind of moral equivalence between what BOR MAY have done (what he actually said over the PHONE we will never know for sure) and what we KNOW Edwards did [illicit physical sex; probable siring of a bastard child; illegal and secretive hush money; humiliating a dying wife, etc.] and then to say BOR is somehow disqualified from reporting the story is just plain crazy.

I wonder if Mark would be able to tell the difference between a woodpecker and a carpenter . . . I mean they both work with wood, don't they?

My Gawd, from hearing you talk you would think that poor Mackis was raped.

Do you have any idea of the difference between rape and talking naughty over a telephone? [Keep in mind we don't know what was said] Do you have any idea of how sensitive sexual harassment laws are nowadays? Someone can tell an off color joke and be sued for sexual harassment.

You may not understand this but telling an off color joke is not the same thing as rape (even though some courts would deem it sexual harassment).

But now I got a few phrases for you to look up.

Cheating and publically humiliating one's wife.

Dying of cancer

Siring a bastard child

Lying to one's political supporters (contributers) repeatedly

Illegally paying money to one's mistress from campaign contributions.

Cravenly allowing a supporter to take the fall for one's misdeeds.

I thought that drawing moral equivalence between the two situations is craxy

But then here you come laughably trying to argue that what BOR did (although you can't be sure what he really did) is worse.

You win the prize for an expression of abject craziness.
August 13, 2008, 1:59:04 PM EDT – Like – Reply

Indeed, James, that is a very big difference.

However, lost in all the tumultuous talk, the cacophonous clamor, the harsh hullaballo of moral equivalency, or the lack thereof, is the point that BOR was not the proper bearer of this "news" item. For that is the cable news issue, and the only cable news issue, isn't it? Moral equivalency is an issue best left to Sister Ursula Upright's "Highway to Hell" blog, or something similar. I can say, on a personal level, in matters of sexual indiscretion, Tommy Thong speaks less clearly to me than Brian Boxer does. On the broader and more pertinent point, whatever else is said about O'Reilly, his report left a powerful odor of hypocrisy about the studio. It tainted his story. That is the cable news sin.

The other sins, if any, I'll leave to others more righteous than I.

First you have no idea what BOR did except that we know that whatever it was took place over the telephone (she could have hung up) and that BOR was sued for sexual harassment.

One time a fireman was sued for sexual harassment because he put a picture of a naked woman in his (supposedly) private locker. If that fireman became a reporter could he not report on the Edwards affair without being a hypocrite?

Gimme a break.

There is no hypocrisy here. BOR is free to report honestly about the Edward's affair without even a trace of hypocrisy.

The flag issue started out as one which we were advised by you not to take too seriously, Johnny. And, it can be amusing to poke fun at some highly-paid media or advertising consultant who makes such a ridiculous gaffe. How many laughs from New Coke, for example ....

Yesterday, you used the word "stonewalls" to describe MSNBC not discussing the graphic. It seemed odd that for a none-to-serious matter, a word with such a pejorative connotation would be used. You changed the tone of the discussion when you did this.

Continuing with this thought, you act as if MSNBC has some sacred, solemn duty to respond to something I am sure few people care much about, i.e. background graphics. I would be surprised if MSNBC did respond. Rightfully or wrongfully, people within the industry assume you have an intimate tie to FNC. I don't think that relations between MSNBC and FNC are such that attorneys and PR people at MSNBC are predisposed to respond to you if you are seen wearing an FNC cap. They would likely assume, rightfully or wrongfully, that responding to you would be responding to FNC. Maybe if you were perceived as tied in with PBS or the Comedy Channel, you would get a response. Maybe not.

This flag thing seems to me to have outlived in useful life and what started out as fun has descended into morose and melancholy minutia, self-righteous rancor. It is a topic that is as pleasant as yesterday's cod on the curb awaiting trash pick-up.

He was picked to head Homeand Security and then we found out about all his cheating on his wife and all other criminal activity. John Edwards is scum but he isnt the first to cheat and he wont be the last. Also Newt Ginchrich cheated on his wife and she also had cancer. Cheating scumbags can be both republican and democrats.

There was some talk at the casa about shopping for bathing suits for a jaunt to Jamaica over Labor Day. In my considerable experience, it is best to avoid such shopping trips since I have yet to find the right answer to a woman pointing to a bathing suit with a tag sticking out the neck and asking, "Is this slimming?" If I answer yes, it's, "So, I looked fat in the blue one?," and "no" is just never an option. In any event, I am thinking of launching the SS Bess Truman, getting some Bombay Sapphire, some tonic, ice and lime and just floating. Why don't you two join me, and we can work out the creative differences. It's a lovely afternoon to bake.

Mr. $, in your Countdown recap, you need to have some sort of clock that honors how long its been since Keith has not made a retraction about O'Reilly correctly citing tax laws in honor of Olby's demand of Milbank making a retraction in order for him to be back on the show. Ie. "15 days since Olbermann has not corrected his O'Reilly error." It can include all other errors if not too clumsy or start a list of things Olby has lacked to make any corrections for.

Damn HF,

Your are right. KO BEAT BOR by 30,000 viewers.

Wait . . . I apologize. I was comparing the second showing of BOR (11:00) to KO's prime time show.

If you compare the 8:00 numbers of the two shows, BOR wins dramatically.

But now if you add BOR's 8:00 numbers and 11:00 numbers and then add KO's 8:00 numbers and 10:00 numbers . . . BOr really destroys Olby.

Wonder why Olby does not go head to head with BOR at 11:00. Would his numbers even more dismal then?

If this Powell speculation turns out to be accurate, I have to wonder if the nutroots and news channels like MSNBC and CNN will toss out the terms "traitor", "disloyal, and "turncoat" as often as they did in 2004 when Sen. Zell Miller (D-GA) spoke at the 2004 RNC convention and endorsed Bush.

I am not sure what to think about this "scoop." Powell spokesperson flatly denies it.

http://www.time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/

Powell spokeswoman Peggy Cifrino strongly denied the report.

"There's absolutely no truth to it whatsoever," Cifrino told FOXNews.com. "Colin Powell will not be at either convention. There's absolutely no truth to this

Does Cifrino not know what she is talking about? Does Kristol not know what he is talking about?

I agree that this was a devious move, but in this sense:

Wrongway Bill desparately wants affection and approval and Juan Williams, with another job on the side, just can't always be there. So Wrongway says to himself, in private, which is anytime the Panel is not on the air, "Make a stunning projection. If you're right, everyone will be shocked. Men and women will adore you, men will seek you out for a beer and a chat, women will want you to sire their children." Just a theory, you understand ....

Got to run. Phone ringing. A major poultry processing company calling to apologize to me, I imagine.

I didn't watch Bill O'Reilly yet, but Keith Olbermann during his "Bushed" segment, talked about the story that is scary.

No one else, unless you can save me time, that Bill O'Reilly talked about it, talked about this story, and sadly, as I am listening to Mike Malloy right now, will not talk about it, either.

The only other "major" sources that talked about it are: NY Times, and (gasp) Democracy Now.

Now Fox defenders, (Ashley, Fox Fan, and any other Fox Followers) why should Fox News by my source of news, when NO ONE ELSE talked about it?

Actually HF, his exact quote was
"Did you you see our man Ailes at all?"
in reference to wanting to know if Rush saw Roger Ailes at Tony Snows funeral. (You know Tony Snow, he's the guy the newshounds insulted when he died and many of their minions were cheering for when he died.)

Of course, your hatred of FNC blinds you to the truth, you obvioously read this statement as proof of a conspiracy between Ailes and the Bush family, but it is a common thing in the US for one person in a conversation to refer to a third party as "our man", "our girl", "our pal", etc when that person is a mutual friend or acquaintence.

But please, don't let reasonable analysis interfere with your plans.

I know that this is an old topic, but there are some points worth noting.

Let's assume that Kristol's story is false.

I am struck by Powell's calling Kristol's report his musings.

If that report is nothing more than musings, then Mark is likely correct in his analysis. Kristol conjured up the report to call attention to himself.

Let's suppose however that Kristol is correct in where he got the story. Kristol says that he received the news from people who are in the Obama camp.

On that, Kristol may be telling the truth. Rove (whom HF originally accused of being behind the story) had no motive for propagandizing that falsehood.

But the Obama folks sure did. It is a story that is designed (again assuming that it is false) to sow dissension in Republican ranks and to dishearten the McCain campaign effort.

So, from the Obama camp you have both motive and opportunity. If there is any deviousness here, I bet it is coming from the Obama campaign.

OS,

This is an interesting post.

Looks like Ellen Brodsky is toning down her language a little. Note she did not call Johnny a P* as she did in a previous post.

This time she agrees that when NHers come here they shoud be "polite and on topic."

Before she said that NHers cannot be too rude when they post here.

I wonder if it is beginning to dawn on Ellen that she has made herself extremely vulnerable to a lawsuit.

What she does not explain is this: Why can't people from this site go to NH and post (without being deleted or admonished) so long as we are polite and on topic?

Why can't Johnny post there as long as he is polite and on topic?

Johnny has said that Ellen is welcome to post at this site if she is polite and on topic. [In fact I have witnessed an impolite post or two from Ellen not being deleted]

Wouldn't it be easier to show us up when we post and Newshounds? Why not give us a level playing field when we are there so that they can intellectually demolish us whenever we post there?

I wonder why Average American Patriot did not raise those questions with Ellen.

I wonder if he would be willing to raise those questions.

Nahhh. Probably not.

Raising those questions with Ellen would require courage . . . and as we all know Average American Patriots have no courage!!

I took your original post, where you described yourself in very favorable terms, and substituted it with words of a similar pronunciation but made to make fun of you.

It is no secret. It has been all over. By now you should know since some "regulars" have used it.

But you probably don't have any problem with it.

I said you ought to consider Teilhard's views, along with his historical context and the response from the hierarchy, in contrast to other current fundamental views, ie, Cee.

I know this is getting waaaaaaaay off topic.
If you remember Cee's comments, in his twisted beliefs, you have committed several sins.

I didn't expect you to answer for Cee, just like I didn't demand that you answer for "Phony Soldier" since it is evident they are on the faaaaaar, very faaaaaaar fringe.

This is where the "knocking off" part comes for you to be in "the list." One of your responses was to dismiss Teilhard as some "heretic" just like Cee rejects the mountains of fossils spanning thousands and millions of years.

Now, who else wants to argue the mention of "the list"?

McSame claims to know and talk to "Misha" everyday during the current crisis, and McSame claims to have known "Misha" since 25 years ago. Which is utter B$.

BUT

If Madam Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, talks to foreign officials and representatives, she is going beyond the limits of her position.

Here, Jeffy. So simple even you ought to understand it.

Senator McSame speaking with foreign officials - GOOD

AAP,

My comment was a direct response to a post by Danny that talked about how people were treated differently at NH and J$P I addressed it to him. I was responding to a comment on this site about what folks at NH were saying about this site.. My comment was pertinent to the discussion under way.

You called me a humorless, cranky, whiny old dude. You said your tumor comment was a play on words to make fun of me. As I said next door, we have two disparate genres of humor In addition, it appears we also respond differently to being made fun of. Insults and name-calling appear to be your default position when someone disagrees with you, makes fun of you or corrects you. Plus taking comments out of context.

I suggest you and any others who wish to see what actually transpired go back to

OS,

Hate to disagree, but since I was the object of scorn in the discussion, I'm certain he wasn't implying Georgia was our enemy. They (NH) were already confused about Pelosi being criticized for meeting with ?Iraqi? officials, instead of Syria. I said I was pretty sure a visit by her with Iraqi officials would be welcomed by all, "unless, of course, she was trying to negotiate with a foreign government." It went downhill hill from there. There were plenty of screw ups, but calling Georgia an enemy wasn't one of them, which would have been fine if he was a Florida Gator.
