As MSNBC Stonewalls Flag Flap, Keith Revives Controversy

This site was first to report on the curious case of MSNBC's "place for politics" logo, which displays an American flag flying upside-down. The reasons for this puzzling design decision remain as murky today as they have been all along, mainly because MSNBC is hiding behind a wall of silence.

We have repeatedly emailed the news channel to ask why they fly the American flag upside-down, and whether there is some intentional meaning in doing so:

It has come to my attention that MSNBC is running an animated flag bug in the lower right hand corner of the screen. In this logo ("the place for politics") the flag appears upside down rather than right side up.

Are you able to tell me why the flag is shown flying upside down, and whether there is any meaning or significance that is intended? Thank you so much. --J$
In multiple emails we have posed this question to MSNBC spokespersons (including Emily Marx, Alana Russo, Paulette Song). We have not received an acknowledgement, let alone any answers.

Flying the American flag upside-down has a specific and long-held meaning: it is an internationally recognized sign of "dire distress" signifying "extreme danger to life or property" (US Code Chapter 10, 176). Any other display of the flag with the union side down is categorized as disrespect. How odd that MSNBC, which uses a right-side-up flag in other circumstances, chose to use a warning of "dire distress" in connection with American politics.

Now, in the midst of MSNBC's stonewalling comes Keith Olbermann. As this video (from Olbermann Watch) demonstrates, Keith ridiculed George Bush for holding up an American flag backwards--while MSNBC's upside-down flag continued to fly in the corner of the screen!

Why does MSNBC fly the American flag upside-down? What is it supposed to mean? And why won't they answer questions about it?

Yep! According to Olby, if the wind causes a flag to change direction high on a flag pole, then I guess the wind is committing a crime.

Olby is so in the tank for democrats, he will complain about anything the president does.

Does the upside down flag mean that Olby believes Obama, his man, is going to lose? Is that why he thinks that we are in distress politically?

That's why the flag is attached with the Battle Field and Stars against the pole so no matter what the Battle Field and Stars are always FIRST. But logic and a little reading has never been the strong suit of the Rubber Duckie Wondermann.

Scott,

You are right. Mark's comment was incredibly silly and has nothing to do with much of anything.

The only flags that never fly backwards are flags that have a symmetric pattern so that the flag looks exactly the same whether it flies to the right or to the left of the flagpole.

OK. So what?

Ashley,

That was a good point about the wind. Hard to say that the United States flag is flying backward, since the flag flies backward fairly often. Just depends on which way the wind id blowing.

I thought far more interesting than holding the flag in a manner that an ordinary and prudent person would consider backwards was beating the small flag rolled around its stick against his thigh. Several of the cable people and Stewart were showing that last night, all with great guffaws. Who would have ever thought flag waving was so fraught with problems?

I guess this is one of those things where you had to have been there to see the humor. Neither was I there nor did I see the reports you mentioned.

I do know that in battle flag bearers often carried American flag on long poles that were often propped against their thighs. No one thought that they were dishonoring the flag by bearing the flag in that way . . . especially since many of these unfortunate bearers lost their lives in battle. They were often targeted by the enemy.

Scott is 100% correct.

Mark, HF and Whatzhizname are the ones who "need a lesson."

Army Regulation 670-1, “Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia,” updated most recently September 5, 2003, addresses explicitly the proper and lawful placement of the U.S. flag patch on the Army uniform.

The regulation states that when authorized for application to the proper uniform the American flag patch is to be worn, right or left shoulder, so that “the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. The appropriate replica for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the ‘reverse side flag’.”

The only reason some people think the "reverse side flag" is backwards is because English is written and read left to right.

The only reason people would jump on the picture of the President holding the flag is because they hate the President, not because they respect the flag.

Whayzhizname and his defenders wouldn't know the proper way to show respect for the flag if their lives depended on it.

Fortunately for them, that is not the case. There is little I can think of that pisses me off more than self-rightous, know-it-all, hypocritical flamers, whether on cable TV or comment threads, that gleefully criticize others for making mistakes while not having a clue about what they're talking about.

HF,

We are not talking about that either. No one has called into question the official display of a flag at sporting event.

We are talking about a citizen in the stands with a small flag on on little pole and whether the rules are so strict that the poor guy can't wave the flag one way and then the other.

I daresay the rules of etiquette are less strict for a person in the stands than for the official display of the flag. I also think it is a little ridiculous for anyone to think otherwise.

As you continue to display your ignorance by not leaving well enough alone, the regulation states in language clear enough to be understood by a private in the US Army, but evidently not clear enough to be understood by a haggis farmer, that there is not a single correct way to display a flag, whether on a uniform, the tail of an aircraft or held by someone at a sporting event or a friggin gay pride event. It states that the flag must face forward, never in retreat, regardless of which shoulder it is worn on or which side of the aircraft it is displayed..If an individual is holding a flag in both hands while stationary, either way is correct, neither way is wrong.

The fact that whatzhizname doesn't know that and attempts to ridicule someone held the flag correctly speaks volumes about just how pitiful he has become. Please, continue to defend the indefensible. It speaks volumes.

Well I was going to let this pass, but since Haggis thought it necessary to bring it up, I guess I'll have to deal with it.

1. That same shot of Bush in the stands is in the video I posted within my article. Did you even watch that video? If so, why did you feel it necessary to post a link to the same shot?

B. The subject of the article is MSNBC's upside-down flag.

III. How does that shot of Bush in the video advance the argument beyond the identical shot of Bush in the video I posted, vis-a-vis MSNBC's upside-down flag?

If you can answer these questions, either PS or Haggis, then I will allow the link to stand.

Great collaborative effort guys, and the MSNBC riddle is solved if we consider vstol:

... the flag must face forward, never in retreat ....

and HF:

I'll take you at your word that it can be done both ways.

If you're a paratrooper and jump out of the aircraft head first or rotate for a time in which you are descending head first, the flag must face forward, i.e. stars first, which is really backwards. Otherwise, the flag would be in retreat. Ergo, the MSNBC flag is at 0700 Hours as the paratrooper is nearing the straight downward fall and will soon be at 0600 Hours, then begin rising again with star ascending from 0500 Hours, onward.

See, even some of us liberals are ex-military and know flag etiquette.

Even as President, he is entitled in a stadium, to wave the flag around as he sees fit.

And are hence encouraging others in posting links that are duplicative to what is already in the post.

Right now I think I'm going to close off any further comments about Bush's handling of the flag, because it is clear that it was a ploy by Haggis and PS to change the subject of this post. The subject of this post is MSNBC's flag logo. A cable news issue. You want to discuss that, fine. And Haggis, from now on if you are going to comment on specific topic posts, I expect you will have read and viewed them. Did you know that the military also uses "boot camp" for that initial period of training and instruction upon induction? For me, it was only a couple of days, learn how to salute, wear the uniform, recognize rank, pick up copies of UCMJ, but for some people it lasted longer.

Thank goodness that mystery is solved. What prize do I win, Johnny? Should I report the findings to MSNBC, or do you wish to do so? No pride of ownership, here.

Mark give it up even you can't believe that pathetic analogy you typed, well guess you can. So you can show it possible by any possible physics that The AMERICAN FLAG can be attached to any part of the human body or anything to show the Stripes attached to the HUMAN OR OBJECT. Do explain because you may hold the equation to DEFY ALL KNOWN PHYSIC'S.

Actually, Scott, that is not an analogy. I'm not making a comparison. I'm giving an explanation, an amplification.

I saw right through your diversionary post and just shook my head in disbelief. Scott, in time, will do the same.

Scott harrased me via my personal email account for weeks telling me how he was "pulling my strings" (???), I am the same person as Mark (???), and how terrible my libido is (lol).

Scott is the reason why people such as AAP and Gen Escape Goat exist. They are the balance to his ignorance and hate.

Well, let's not hold back any punches, F/F. You and I as the same person? That is rich, indeed.

I once saw an apparition of the BVM in a block of Double Gloucester. Looked like Loretta Young in "Come to the Stable," but she was playing a nun. Now, that was odd!
